Chapter Index

    Heart turned to ashes

The night in Fog Harbor is as cold as ice.Shen Zhiyi held the phone in his hands. Lu Wanheng’s number was on the screen. His fingers hesitated on the dial button for a whole hour, and finally pressed the call button. The phone rang for a long time before it was answered. Lu Wanheng’s cold and distant voice came from the other side, like a knife tempered with frost: “Is something wrong?”

“Wan Heng,” Shen Zhiyi’s voice was trembling uncontrollably, and tears welled up instantly, “Can you…can you come back? Let’s have a good talk, okay?”

“There’s nothing to talk about.” Lu Wanheng’s voice had no warmth at all, even a hint of impatience, “I’ve made it very clear before, we’re done here.”

“No, I don’t believe it!” Shen Zhiyi’s voice suddenly rose, with a sad cry, “You are not such a person, you must have difficulties, right? Did your father force you? Wanheng, tell me, we will face it together, just like we agreed before, don’t leave me alone…”

She spoke incoherently, pleading humbly as if grasping the last straw. She recalled the sweetness between the two of them, the way he bore the pressure alone to protect her, and the firm tone in which he said “never separate” when he hugged her. She didn’t want to believe that those good things would evaporate so easily.

On the other end of the phone, Lu Wanheng’s finger knuckles holding the phone turned white, and his fingertips trembled slightly from exertion. He could clearly hear Shen Zhiyi’s cry. The sound was like countless thin needles, piercing his heart so densely that it hurt so much that he could hardly breathe. How much he wanted to tell her the truth, how much he loved her, how much he wanted to tell her that his pain at the moment was no less than hers.

But he can’t.His father’s eyes are everywhere. As long as he shows a trace of reluctance and hesitation, Shen Zhiyi will be in danger again. He could only harden his heart and use the most hurtful words to push her away completely.

“Difficulties?” Lu Wanheng sneered, his tone full of deliberate ridicule, “Shen Zhiyi, are you too naive? How can there be so many difficulties in this world? I just don’t love you anymore, I’m tired of it, and I’m tired of it, that’s all.”

“You lied!” Shen Zhiyi’s tears fell even more fiercely, and her body trembled uncontrollably, “You clearly said that you love me, you will always protect me, and you will not let me be wronged! Have you forgotten these words?”

“Forgot?” Lu Wanheng’s voice suddenly turned cold, with a hint of deliberate cruelty, “Those are just words to coax you, do you believe it? Shen Zhiyi, do you really think that I will give up everything in the Lu Group and live with you, a woman who has nothing and can’t even tolerate you in her original family? You think too highly of yourself.”

These words were like a sharp knife, piercing into Shen Zhiyi’s heart and completely shattering her last hope. She staggered back and hit the wall behind her. She was so painful that she couldn’t speak, but the pain in her heart was thousands of times more severe than the pain in her body.

“Let me tell you,” Lu Wanheng continued to speak hurtful words, and every word was like an ice pick, piercing Shen Zhiyi’s bone marrow. “The time I spent with you was just an episode in my life, a game used to relieve boredom and kill time. Now that the game is over, I will naturally return to my original life and my world. And you are not worthy of entering my life, let alone standing beside me.”

“As for my father,” he paused deliberately and his tone became colder, “He did find me and gave me a good opportunity. As long as I break up with you, I can return to the Lu Group and restore all rights and inheritance rights. You see, I chose a better future, and you are just a stumbling block on my road to success. Now, I should kick you away.”

Shen Zhiyi covered her mouth and suppressed her sobs. Her tears were like broken beads, falling continuously and soaking her clothes. She wanted to say something, but found that her throat seemed to be blocked and she couldn’t make any sound. She could only listen to Lu Wanheng on the other end of the phone, using the coldest and cruelest words, denying all the past between them bit by bit, and destroying her love and dignity bit by bit.

“From now on, don’t call me again, and don’t look for me again.” Lu Wanheng’s voice was full of final determination, “We are not from the same world. From now on, we will return to each other, and we will never contact you again.”

After saying that, he hung up the phone without hesitation.A “beep” busy tone came from the receiver, hitting Shen Zhiyi’s heart like a heavy hammer. She slid weakly to the ground, hugging her knees, and cried uncontrollably. The cry was shrill and desperate, echoing in the empty apartment, but she received no response.

Lu Wanheng, who was on the other end of the phone, couldn’t hold on anymore after hanging up the phone. He slumped on the floor of the studio, tears pouring out.He clutched his chest, where the pain felt like it was about to burst.Every word he just said was like a knife, piercing into Shen Zhiyi’s heart first, and then piercing into his own heart. He knew that he had hurt the person he loved most and pushed her into the abyss of despair in the most cruel way.But he had no choice but to use this method to protect her safety and livelihood.

He looked out the window at the dark night, his heart filled with endless pain and guilt. He didn’t know if Shen Zhiyi could withstand this fatal blow, and he didn’t know if he still had a chance to make up for the damage caused to her.

Shen Zhiyi didn’t sleep all night when his request for peace was rejected. She sat on the ground, hugging her knees, and cried all night long. Until dawn, her tears had dried up, leaving only a numb void. The sunlight outside the window shone through the gaps in the curtains and fell on her pale and haggard face, but it did not bring any warmth and only felt dazzling.

From that day on, Shen Zhiyi’s world completely fell into darkness. Her insomnia became more and more serious. She kept her eyes open all night long, looking at the ceiling. Lu Wanheng’s cold and cruel words were repeatedly replayed in her mind, and the sweetness and promise between the two of them were replayed. Those images were like sharp fragments, cutting her nerves repeatedly, causing her extreme pain.

She began to have auditory hallucinations.Sometimes, she would hear Lu Wanheng’s voice calling her name gently, saying that he had not changed his mind and that he was forced; but sometimes, she would hear his cold taunting voice, saying that she was not worthy and that she was just a game. These voices intertwined in her mind, making her unable to distinguish between reality and illusion, and she almost suffered a mental breakdown.

Her appetite completely disappeared. Whether it was the meals she once loved or the desserts Lu Wanheng bought for her, they all made her feel sick when they were placed in front of her.She lived on only a small amount of water every day, and her weight dropped at an alarming rate. Her cheeks were sunken, her eyes were hollow, and she was so thin that only a handful of bones remained, exuding a sickly fragility.

What’s even more frightening is that she began to show signs of self-harm.Whenever the pain and despair overwhelmed her in the dead of night, she would pinch her arm with her nails and watch the red marks appear on her arm, and even blood ooze out, so that the pain in her heart could be slightly relieved.Later, she started to scratch her wrist with the blade, watching the blood seeping out little by little, and feeling the passage of life little by little, and she actually felt a little relieved.

There are piles of drawings in the apartment, but they have never been touched again. The painting career that she once loved and allowed her to find herself has now become meaningless. She lies on the bed or sits on the ground every day, motionless, like a soulless sculpture.Occasionally, she would talk to the air, sometimes cry, sometimes giggle, and her mental state became worse and worse.

The studio has been completely shut down due to Father Lu’s threats. The water and electricity were cut off, the leasing qualification was revoked, the partners also terminated the contract, and the assistant also left.Shen Zhiyi has never been to the studio again. The place that was once full of joy, laughter, hard work and hope has now become a pain that she does not want to touch.

One day, Shen Zhiyi suddenly felt difficulty breathing, his heart ached severely, and his vision went black. She struggled to get up, used her last bit of strength, picked up her cell phone, and dialed the emergency number. When the medical staff arrived, she was already unconscious on the ground, her arms were covered with old and new scars, and she was so weak that she was dying.

In the hospital, after a series of examinations, the doctor took the diagnosis report and told her solemnly: “Ms. Shen, based on your symptoms and examination results, you have been diagnosed with severe depression, accompanied by severe anxiety and schizophrenia. Your condition is very serious. If not treated in time, you are likely to have suicidal tendencies and be life-threatening.”

“Severe depression…” Shen Zhiyi looked at these words on the diagnosis report with empty eyes, without any waves. She had known for a long time that she was sick, very sick. From the breakup of her original family, to the rumors in the financial circle, to the project crisis, and finally to Lu Wanheng’s betrayal and injury, her psychological defenses had completely collapsed after repeated blows.

The doctor recommended that she be hospitalized and receive professional psychological counseling and drug treatment. But Shen Zhiyi shook his head and refused. She had no money and no one to take care of her. More importantly, she felt that she had no hope of living.Hospitalization, for her, just prolongs the pain.

She went through the discharge procedures and returned to the empty apartment alone. When she opened the door, she was still greeted by the cold darkness and dead silence. She walked to the window and looked at the endless flow of people downstairs, feeling a strong impulse in her heart. She wanted to jump down, completely end this endless pain, and escape from this dark world.

Just as she climbed onto the window sill and was about to jump, she saw a photo on the desk. That was a photo of her and Lu Wanheng. In the photo, they were smiling so happily and sweetly. Lu Wanheng held her tenderly, his eyes full of love.Seeing this photo, Shen Zhiyi’s tears welled up again.

She thought of Lu Wanheng’s tenderness and protection, of his determination to break with her father for her, and of his promise to “never separate” when he hugged her.A faint hope suddenly surged in her heart. Maybe Lu Wanheng really had his reasons?Maybe he didn’t really want to hurt her?

This thought was like a seed that took root and sprouted in her desperate heart. She came down from the window sill, hugged the photo, collapsed on the ground, and sobbed softly. She didn’t know if this weak hope could support her going forward, and she didn’t know if her world would ever see light again.

The shadow of severe depression was like a huge net, tightly wrapping Shen Zhiyi, leaving her breathless. She struggled with pain and despair every day, wandering on the edge of life and death. She didn’t know how long she could hold on, and she didn’t know if the person who had promised to protect her all her life would appear again and pull her out of this dark abyss.

In the apartment, only Shen Zhiyi’s weak cries were left, intertwined with the sound of the wind outside the window, composing a sad and desperate elegy. Her world has been completely swallowed by darkness, leaving only endless pain and waiting for a redemption that may never come.

Banxia novel, a lot of fun
