Chapter Index

    Senior Chu Jiyan

After a good night’s sleep, Lin Xingmian was gently awakened by the slight movement in the living room.

There were no noisy footsteps coming from the Tongzi Building in the early morning, nor was there the panic that clenched his heart when he woke up in the middle of the night. The soft and clean quilt was wrapped in a faint scent of sunshine. He opened his eyes and waited for a while before he truly realized that he had really walked out of the darkness.

Gently pushing open the door to the guest room, the aroma of warm breakfast was already wafting into the living room.

Jin Xianling was quietly pouring the cooked porridge into a bowl in the kitchen, with neat and meticulous movements. Qing Feng was sitting on the sofa, flipping through several pages of documents. When she saw him coming out, she raised her eyes and curled her lips, her tone as gentle as the morning light.

Xu Baiyan came over with half a piece of toast in his mouth and patted his arm carelessly: “Are you awake? Come over and have breakfast. The millet porridge made by Brother Ling is very good for your stomach.”

Song Xu was also in the living room, leaning against the window and processing messages on his phone. His expression was still calm, but when he looked at Lin Xingmian, his eyes were less alienated and more stable and sure.He rushed back last night after dealing with all subsequent hidden dangers. It was already late at night when he came in. He didn’t disturb her any more. He just silently said that everything was okay and went back to his room.

Lin Xingmian responded softly, walked very lightly, and walked to the dining table to sit down.

On the table were warm porridge, light side dishes, and warm milk. It was simple, but more comforting than anything he had ever eaten. He picked up the spoon and sipped the porridge, and the warmth slid down his throat and into his heart. The heaviness that had been weighing on his heart for many years seemed to be dissipated little by little at this moment.

He used to feel that he was a burden that no one wanted, a lonely soul who could only grit his teeth in the darkness. But now, he was sitting in this apartment full of fireworks, surrounded by four people who treated him sincerely. He didn’t need to be on guard, to please, or to be ready to escape at any time.

Just as he was quietly drinking porridge, the phone in his pocket suddenly vibrated wildly, one after another, so fast that it seemed to shatter the screen.

Lin Xingmian paused with his fingertips and subconsciously took out his phone. When he saw the name jumping on the screen, his whole body froze – Chu Jiyan.

That was the senior he was closest to and who cared for him the most in school.

Chu Jiyan is gentle and soft-hearted. He has been protecting him as a biological brother since he entered school. He knows that his family’s conditions are not good and his mother’s health is not good. He always helps him pay attention to the school’s subsidies and blocks unnecessary troubles for him. He is the only person in the school who can let go of his guard.

He has been in trouble these past few days. His mobile phone is either turned off or has no signal, and he has not been able to contact anyone. Chu Jiyan must be going crazy because he cannot find him.

Lin Xingmian’s fingertips trembled slightly, and she took a deep breath before pressing the answer button.

As soon as the call was connected, a voice with a heavy crying tone and panic that almost broke the voice burst out from the other end. Through the screen, you could feel the panic of the other party on the verge of collapse:

“Lin Xingmian! You finally answered the phone! Do you know how long I’ve been looking for you?! Where have you been these past few days – you don’t answer the phone, you don’t reply to messages. I went to your house downstairs and knocked on the door several times, but no one answered. You didn’t come to school, and the counselors were all asking. I almost went to the police station to call the police! What happened to you? You’re talking!”

A series of rapid and choked questions came at him. Chu Jiyan’s voice was shaking badly. The fear and panic that he had suppressed for several days completely failed him at the moment when he heard his voice.

The tip of Lin Xingmian’s nose suddenly felt sore, and her eyes instantly turned red. Her fingers holding the phone tightened, and her voice was so soft that it sounded hoarse, full of guilt:

“Senior, I’m sorry…I’m fine. I’m really fine. It’s just that something happened some time ago and I didn’t have time to tell you, which made you worry.”

“It’s okay, it’s okay…” Chu Jiyan was panting heavily on the other end of the phone. He couldn’t calm down for a long time, and his tone was full of fear, “Where are you now? I’ll go find you right away, Xing Mian, I want to see you now, don’t disappear again, I really can’t stand it…”

Lin Xingmian pursed her lips, without concealing anything, and quietly reported the address of Qing Feng’an’s apartment.

He knew that Chu Jiyan was really scared. If he was not allowed to see him again, the senior who had been protecting him might not be able to hold on anymore.

After hanging up the phone, Lin Xingmian held the phone and lowered his head, feeling full of guilt.

Not only did he let Qing Feng’an and others worry about him, but even the seniors who had been treating him well were frightened by him and couldn’t rest for several days.

Qing Feng’an saw his uneasiness, and gently pushed a glass of warm milk in front of him, with a gentle and soothing tone: “Is he the senior of your school? Don’t be nervous, we will have something to eat together when he comes over. We are all here, there is nothing to be afraid of.”

Xu Baiyan also spoke to the side, with a carefree but warm tone: “It’s just that it’s a good thing that someone is worried about you. It’s better than you carrying it alone before. When he comes later, we will make it clear to him and not let him worry blindly.”

Jin Xianling walked out of the kitchen and silently pushed a plate of side dishes in front of him. She didn’t say much, but her silent movements were full of silent support.

Song Xu also raised his eyes and spoke calmly, with a firm tone: “The matter has been resolved. No one can make things difficult for you anymore. He came here just for peace of mind.”

Lin Xingmian nodded and sipped the milk, and the panic in his heart slowly calmed down.

He knew that he was no longer alone. Whether it was the four people in front of him or Chu Jiyan who was about to come over, they were all people who treated him sincerely.

In just over twenty minutes, the doorbell of the apartment was rang quickly and frequently, one after another, full of anxiety from the people outside the door.

Xu Baiyan stood up and ran to open the door. As soon as he opened the door, he saw a boy with gentle eyebrows but a haggard face standing outside the door.

Chu Jiyan’s hair was messy, his eyes were covered with thick red bloodshot eyes, and his eyes were obviously blue and black. The coat he was wearing was crooked, and he even forgot to tie his scarf. It looked like he hadn’t slept a wink in the past few days. He was looking for people all over the world like crazy, and he couldn’t even take care of himself.

He glanced past Xu Baiyan and straight into the living room. When he saw Lin Xingmian sitting at the dining table, all his tight sense and restraint instantly collapsed.

Chu Jiyan rushed in almost desperately, crossed the living room, and hugged Lin Xingmian tightly into his arms. He tightened his arms as if he was afraid that if he let go, the person in front of him would disappear again. He buried his face in Lin Xingmian’s shoulder, his whole body trembling slightly. The tears he had suppressed for several days finally fell, and his voice was choked with sobs:

The warm body temperature pressed against him, with a panicked heartbeat and unstoppable trembling. Lin Xingmian froze on the spot, the tip of his nose was so sore, and tears fell uncontrollably.

He slowly raised his hand and hugged Chu Jiyan gently, his voice hoarse and guilty:

“Senior, I’m sorry. I was wrong. I will never do it again. I’m really sorry for making you worry for so long.”

“Don’t say you’re sorry,” Chu Jiyan let go of him, but still held his wrist and refused to let go. He held his face and looked at it carefully, looking at his cheeks that had obviously lost weight, and at the tiredness in his eyes that had not yet dissipated. He frowned in distress, “Look at you, you are so thin, how much suffering have you suffered in the past few days? Is someone bullying you? Tell me, no matter who it is, I will help you, and I will not let others touch you even if I risk my life.”

Lin Xingmian shook his head, tried hard to suppress the wetness in his eyes, and gave Chu Jiyan a gentle, steady smile:

“There are no more seniors. It’s all solved. Those troubles are gone. No one will bully me anymore, and there won’t be any more troubles.”

Only then did Chu Jiyan notice Qing Fengan, Jin Xianling, Xu Baiyan and Song Xu standing in the living room. Looking at the boys with different temperaments but gentle eyes in front of him, he calmed down his emotions slightly and bowed solemnly to them, his tone full of sincere gratitude:

“Thank you. Thank you very much for taking care of Xing Mian during this time. He is too stubborn. He likes to keep everything to himself and never tells others. Please pay more attention during this time. Thanks to you, he can be safe.”

Qing Feng’an quickly stepped forward to help him gently, and smiled gently: “Senior, you don’t have to be so polite. We are also friends with Xingmian, so we should take care of him. There is no need to worry about it.”

Xu Baiyan also waved his hand and said with a smile: “That’s right, Xing Mian is living with us now, and we will keep an eye on him from now on, and we won’t let him handle things alone again. Don’t worry.”

Jin Xianling stood aside and nodded slightly in agreement, speaking few words but being sincere.

Song Xu also spoke, with a calm but reassuring tone: “The follow-up matters have been dealt with, and there will be no more trouble. He can go to school and live a peaceful life in the future.”

Chu Jiyan looked at the sincere looks of several people, and then looked at Lin Xingmian who was quietly beside him. His heart that had been hanging for a few days finally fell to the ground. He had always been afraid that Lin Xingmian would be wronged and bullied outside, but now that he saw him being sincerely protected by so many people, he finally felt relieved.

He pulled Lin Xingmian to sit down at the dining table and asked him nonchalantly whether he had eaten in the past few days, whether he was cold or not, and whether he felt uncomfortable in any way. His tone was filled with uncontrollable distress.

Lin Xingmian responded softly one by one. He looked at the seniors who were all looking at him, and then looked at Xu Baiyan who was busy adding porridge and vegetables to him, Jin Xianling who was quietly clearing the table, Qing Feng’an who was smiling gently, and Song Xu who was leaning against the window and watching them quietly. His heart was full and warm.

He used to live in darkness, not even daring to ask for a word of concern. He always felt that he was unworthy of being cared about and unworthy of being protected.

But now, there are so many people around him.

There is senior Chu Jiyan who protects him tenderly, Qing Feng’an who is tolerant and steady, Jin Xianling who is silent and attentive, Xu Baiyan who is hard-spoken and soft-hearted, and Song Xu who calmly smooths out all his troubles.

Five people gathered around the small dining table, with no fancy words or deliberate politeness, only simple care and companionship. The sunlight poured in through the window of the living room and fell on everyone. It was bright and warm, filling this small apartment with a steady smoke.

Chu Jiyan looked at Lin Xingmian sipping porridge, and couldn’t help but tell him: “At school, I have already asked the counselor for leave for you. If you want to rest for a few more days, just take a good rest and don’t rush back to class. I will help you organize your homework, and I will make up for you slowly when you get back. No matter what happens in the future, you call me as soon as possible. Even if it is midnight, I will come over immediately. Don’t carry it yourself.”

Lin Xingmian looked up at Chu Jiyan, nodded vigorously, and said in a serious and firm voice:

“I know, senior. No matter what happens in the future, I will tell you and tell them that I will never hide alone again, and I will never let you worry again.”

Qing Feng’an looked at the harmonious scene in front of her, with a gentle smile in her eyes: “From now on, Xingmian will be taken care of by his seniors at school, and we will watch over him in the apartment. Both parties can rest assured that he will no longer have to suffer any grievances.”

Xu Baiyan came over and patted Lin Xingmian’s shoulder: “Did you hear that? From now on, you will be the group’s favorite. If anyone dares to bully you, we will go with the seniors and we will make sure to keep them away.”

Jin Xianling added lightly: “If something happens, let’s take care of it together.”

Song Xu also looked at Lin Xingmian, his tone was calm but his words were true: “No need to be afraid anymore, no need to run away anymore, you have us, you have seniors, you have a family.”

Lin Xingmian held the warm bowl of porridge in her hand, tears falling again, but this time, there was no embarrassment, no grievance, only warmth and peace of mind.

He once plotted against others, deceived those around him, and pushed himself to a dead end, thinking that he could only live on his knees and live in the darkness for the rest of his life.

But in the end, no one blamed him, no one abandoned him, everyone reached out to pull him out of the mire, gave him light, gave him stability, and gave him a home where he could live well.

He is no longer a helpless soul, no longer a burden that no one wants.
