Chapter Index

    Sent something wrong

As soon as the early morning light passed over the eaves of the Tongzi Tower, Lin Xingmian was taken out of the basement by Brother Yan’s men.

The black shirt was replaced by his washed white school uniform, but the collar was arranged too flat, covering the red marks on his neck.Brother Yan didn’t follow him. He only sent two of his men to drive him. A black car was parked at the entrance of the old city. He didn’t dare to drive in for fear of being too conspicuous.

“Remember what you should say.” The man in the passenger seat dropped a new mobile phone. There was only one contact on the screen. “Call me when the time comes. If you dare to play tricks, we will go up now.”

Lin Xingmian clutched the phone, her fingertips cold.He opened the car door and walked into the familiar alley that smelled of oil smoke.

When he walked to the third floor and took out the key, his hands were shaking.

The door was unlocked and ajar.

“Xing Mian?” Mother’s weak voice came from the room, hoarse as if she had just woken up, “Is it you?”

“Mom, it’s me.” Lin Xingmian opened the door, quickly removed all the darkness from his eyes, and put on a slightly tired but gentle smile.

Mother was leaning on the bedside, covered with a thin quilt, trying hard to bring the porridge on the table. When I saw him, my eyes immediately lit up, but was quickly replaced by worry: “Where did you go last night? I couldn’t get through the phone, and the neighbor aunts were so anxious.”

Lin Xingmian’s heart suddenly clenched. He walked over quickly, held his mother’s hand, and put the porridge bowl back: “The school temporarily arranged an internship interview last night, and the phone’s battery ran out, so I didn’t have time to talk.”

    “Internship?” Mother was stunned.

“Yeah.” Lin Xingmian lowered his head, not daring to look into her eyes, and nervously twisted the hem of his school uniform with his fingers, “I was accepted by a company from out of town. I have to leave today, so I came to pack some things.”

“So urgent?” His mother’s voice suddenly became tearful, and she stretched out her hand to hold his arm tightly. “Is it far away? When will you come back?”

“It’s not far, but the training is strict.” Lin Xingmian forced herself to raise her head and gave her a reassuring smile, but there was a sourness in her eyes that could not be concealed. “I will pick you up when I’m stable. You can recuperate at home and take your medicine on time. Don’t worry about me.”

He didn’t dare to say more for fear that he would collapse. He hurriedly walked into the small inner room, opened the old suitcase, and stuffed only two changes of clothes and a thin blanket that my mother often used.

When he was cleaning up, he saw the painting on the corner of the table – it was the flower shop he had painted before. Qing Feng’an was standing behind the counter, Jin Xianling was leaning against the door, Xu Baiyan was holding a paintbrush, and the sun shone on them, making them blindingly warm.

He ran his fingertips over the drawing paper, his throat choked with sobs, and finally turned the drawing over and pressed it to the bottom of the box.

    “Xingmian…” Mother’s voice was trembling.

Lin Xingmian immediately closed the box and walked out to hug her.The mother’s embrace was very light and warm, but she was so thin.”Mom, I’m leaving, please take care of yourself.”

“I asked the neighbor’s aunt to boil eggs for you. You can take them with you.” Mother fumbled and took out a cloth bag from under the pillow, which contained neatly folded change. “Take it, don’t embarrass yourself outside.”

Lin Xingmian clutched the cloth bag, hot tears falling on it, but he could only nod hard: “Okay.”

He didn’t dare to stay any longer, fearing that if he took one more look, he would never be able to leave again.Carrying the suitcase, he quickly walked out of the house and closed the door gently with his backhand.

Inside the door, his mother’s cry could be heard faintly; outside, his world completely collapsed.

He dragged his suitcase and walked down the dark stairs step by step. As soon as he came out of Tongzilou, he saw the familiar white van at the entrance of the alley.

    It’s Qing Feng’an’s delivery truck.

At this moment, Qing Feng’an was leaning against the car, holding a purchase list in his hand, and seemed to be checking it.Jin Xianling stood next to him, looking over here lightly. Xu Baiyan was sitting in the passenger seat, lowering his head and arranging the painting tools.

Lin Xingmian’s heart suddenly tightened, and she subconsciously wanted to hide, but it was already too late.

Xu Baiyan saw him first and shouted in surprise: “Lin Xingmian?”

Qing Fengan and Jin Xianling raised their eyes at the same time, their eyes falling on him.

In the morning light, Lin Xingmian’s face was extremely pale, and his eyes were heavily blue and black. Although his school uniform was neat, it could not hide the fatigue around him.He was dragging a suitcase in his hand and walked hastily, as if he was running away from something. He completely lost the obedience and calmness he had when he came to the flower shop before.

What’s even more abnormal is that there is a faint dust mark on the legs of his school uniform trousers, as if he had been kneeling on the hard ground for a long time.

“Are you…” Qing Feng’an spoke first, her tone still calm, but with a hint of unnoticeable inquiry, “Are you going on a long trip?”

Lin Xingmian’s back tensed up instantly. He stopped and forced a smile. He looked exactly the same as before, but looked extra stiff: “Well, Boss Qing. I found an internship. I have to go out today and pack some things.”

“Internship?” Xu Baiyan frowned, “So sudden? You came to the flower shop yesterday and you didn’t even say anything.”

“It was decided temporarily.” Lin Xingmian’s voice was very soft, with deliberate alienation. “It was arranged by the school. It was a rare opportunity, so I quickly agreed.”

As he spoke, he subconsciously took a step back, as if he was eager to leave the scene. This action seemed even more strange in Jin Xianling’s eyes.

Jin Xianling’s eyes swept from his pale face, to his clenched white fingertips, to the fresh scratches on his suitcase – as if he had been rubbed hard by something hard.

Yesterday afternoon, he clearly saw Lin Xingmian in the direction of the parking lot, answering the phone in a panic, and then became particularly embarrassed.Early this morning, you suddenly had to go out for an internship?

    What a coincidence.

“Where are you going to intern?” Jin Xianling asked, her voice cold and hard, with an unquestionable questioning, “When will you come back?”

Lin Xingmian’s eyes flickered, obviously not expecting him to ask such a detailed question. He tightened his grip on the suitcase handle and said in a panic: “It’s just…a city in the south, the details haven’t been determined yet. The time of return is also uncertain.”

His answer was vague and full of loopholes.

Qing Feng’an looked at him with calm but profound eyes, as if she could see through all his disguises. He noticed that although Lin Xingmian’s neck was covered by his collar, when he lowered his head, a small light red mark was revealed.

There was also an imperceptible stiffness in his knees, even though they were deliberately concealed when he walked.

This is not what an “internship” should be like.

This is what it means to be coerced and forced to do nothing.

    The air suddenly became quiet.

Xu Baiyan also noticed something was wrong. He looked at Lin Xingmian’s pale face and the fear that could not be hidden in his eyes. His heart tightened inexplicably and he stopped talking.

Lin Xingmian was terrified by what they saw. He knew that his lie might have been seen through.

At this moment, the new mobile phone in his pocket suddenly vibrated.

It was a message from Brother Yan’s men: [Don’t wait, we are waiting for you at the alley. If you dare to say one more word to them, you know the consequences.】

Lin Xingmian’s face lost all color in an instant. He raised his head suddenly and bowed to the three of them. His voice was urgent: “Boss Qing, Mr. Jin, Mr. Xu, I’m in a hurry, so I’ll take my leave first.”

After saying that, he dragged his suitcase and walked quickly towards the alley, almost as if he was running away.

When he reached the black car, he was pushed in by his men.The moment the car door closed, he subconsciously turned back and looked at the alley.

Qing Feng’an was still leaning against the car, holding the purchase order in her hand, but didn’t look at it again. His gaze, through the morning fog, was firmly locked on the black car, his eyes deep.

Jin Xianling stood beside him, frowning, taking out her phone and pressing a few buttons quickly.

Xu Baiyan lay on the car window and watched the car drive away, feeling inexplicably uncomfortable.

“Brother An,” he whispered, “Did something happen to Lin Xingmian…?”

Qing Feng’an withdrew her gaze and looked down at the purchase order in her hand. The handwriting on it was clear, but she could no longer read it.He was silent for a few seconds and then spoke slowly, with a hint of certainty in his tone: “Yes.”

He put away the purchase order and looked at Jin Xianling: “Check the license plate of this car.”

“It has been checked.” Jin Xianling’s face was cold, “It is a deck, and the owner information is empty.”

Qing Feng’an’s fingertips lightly tapped the side of the car, and her eyes again turned to the direction Lin Xingmian left.

That boy was still at the door of the flower shop yesterday, with a sweet smile and handing out mints.Today, I dragged my suitcase and fled in a hurry, with scars all over my body and fear in my eyes.

He’s not going for an internship.

    He was taken away.

And yesterday, he just got the purchase order from himself.

A cold light flashed in Qing Feng’an’s eyes.

“It seems that we have to take the initiative to find something to do.”
