    Roasted sweet potatoes

When the sun completely set, Xu Baiyan dug out a rusty small charcoal stove from somewhere, and took out a few round sweet potatoes. He handed them to Qing Feng’an like a treasure: “Roast sweet potatoes for dinner tonight! I bought these specially from the old farmer down the mountain. They are so sweet that they can ooze honey!”

When Jin Xianling heard that there was something delicious, she put aside her soreness in her back and legs, and leaned forward to pick up the sweet potatoes: “I want to pick the biggest one! The one that is burnt!”

Song Xu leaned on the rocking chair in the corridor, his fingertips slowly wrapped around the cloth belt around his waist, and watched the three people squatting and working in the yard.Qing Feng Anzheng was patiently skewering the sweet potatoes with wire. Xu Baiyan was squatting beside the charcoal stove to fan himself, choking and sneezing. Jin Xianling was gesticulating on the side, sometimes he was too hot and sometimes he was too crooked in the placement of the sweet potatoes.

As dusk fell, a lantern was lit in the yard, and the dim light fell softly. The flames in the charcoal stove licked the sweet potato skins, making a sizzling sound. The sweet fragrance gradually spread, mixed with the coolness of the evening breeze, and made people’s stomach growl.

Jin Xianling’s legs were numb from squatting, so she simply sat down on the steps, holding her cheeks and staring at the charcoal stove, muttering: “Hurry up, cook up, hurry up, I can smell the aroma.”

Qing Feng’an turned the skewered sweet potatoes in the direction to avoid burning them, and laughed when he heard this: “Why are you so anxious? You have to wait until the outside is burnt and the inside will be waxy.”

Xu Baiyan’s fanning hand stopped, and he went over to smell it, then smacked it in his mouth: “Tsk, this smell is better than the snacks in the restaurant.”

Just as he was talking, a string of sparks suddenly burst out from the charcoal stove and splashed on Xu Baiyan’s clothes. He jumped up with an “ouch” and patted his clothes hurriedly, making Jin Xianling laugh.Song Xu’s eyebrows arched at the sight. He stood up and walked over. He bent down to pick up a small piece of charcoal that fell on the ground and threw it into the stove. His movements were smooth and fluid, with a touch of the neatness of a martial arts practitioner.

“Be careful.” Song Xu’s voice was warm in the evening breeze, “Don’t burn your clothes.”

Xu Baiyan patted the corner of his clothes and snorted angrily: “It’s not that this broken stove has a strong temper.”

After waiting for another quarter of an hour, the aroma of the sweet potatoes became more intense, the outer skin was already burnt black, and the caramel color could be faintly seen inside.Jin Xianling couldn’t wait to reach out and take it. As soon as he touched the sweet potato skin, he was so burned that he retracted his hand, waving his fingertips and shouting: “Hot, hot, hot! Master, please take the handkerchief!”

Qing Feng’an was prepared. She took a coarse cloth handkerchief from the house, slowly took out the sweet potatoes and placed them on the stone table.Xu Baiyan and Jin Xianling each grabbed one, and regardless of how hot it was, they broke it apart and stuffed it into their mouths. The golden potato meat is steaming, and the sweet aroma explodes in the mouth instantly. It is soft and glutinous, with a hint of burnt aroma, and it is so delicious that it makes people squint their eyes.

“Hmm… sweet! So sweet!” Jin Xianling ate her mouth full of sweet potato puree, her cheeks bulging like a little squirrel stealing food.

Xu Baiyan also ate happily and muttered vaguely: “Next time… next time I will buy a few more and bake them in the oven!”

Song Xu took the smallest sweet potato, wrapped it in a handkerchief, and peeled it bit by bit with gentle movements.Qing Feng sat beside him, holding one in his hand, but didn’t eat much. He just looked at the three people in the courtyard with a faint smile in his eyes.

The evening breeze blew gently, rolling up the tassels of the lanterns, and the flames in the charcoal stove gradually weakened, leaving only a little residual warmth.Jin Xianling was so full that he collapsed on the steps and rubbed his belly. Xu Baiyan leaned next to him. The two of them chatted for a while, telling interesting stories about the old farmer down the mountain and the regret of not going to the hot spring villa.

Song Xu finished peeling the last piece of sweet potato and handed it to Qing Feng’an’s mouth.Qing Feng’an was stunned for a moment, looked up at him, and looked into Song Xu’s smiling eyes. She lowered her head slightly and took a bite. The sweetness spread to the tip of her tongue and warmed her throat to the bottom of her heart.

The laughter in the yard was soft, mixed with the sweet fragrance of sweet potatoes, and drifted into the distant night. The shadows of the mountains in the distance are heavy, and stars are falling on the eaves. This small courtyard is actually a bit warmer than the busiest inn in the world.
