    Chapter 99: Indifference

Gu Yusen sat on the sofa with his little tail, facing the three Xie family members who were nervously unsure of what to say.

The scene was a bit awkward.

    Chu Zhaoyi spoke first.

“If your purpose today is to get me to return to the Xie family, I advise you to drop it.”

“Although, as my biological parents, you can force me to go, if we go to court, as long as I insist you abandoned me for these eighteen years, the law will not agree to let me return.”

“Moreover, I am already an adult. Although the police determined that I didn’t have the ability to live independently and found a foster family for me, as long as I provide a health certificate proving that I have the ability to live independently, you won’t be able to take me back.”

Chu Zhaoyi had read many books about the law and felt that this was a feasible method. Pretending to be a normal person to fool those mediocre psychologists wasn’t difficult for him.

As long as they weren’t on Mason’s level, there wouldn’t be any problems.

The Xie family showing up at his door bothered him. He had used many methods to legitimately reach Gu Yusen’s side.

He didn’t want all of his efforts to be in vain, nor did he want to waste his energy on the Xie family.

Living separate lives was the best outcome.

Zhang Anru’s heart felt like it was being cut by a knife. She felt a deep sense of powerlessness and despair. She had imagined countless times the scene of reuniting with her son, imagining how he would angrily question them, how he would excitedly express his dissatisfaction and resentment.

But when she saw Chu Zhaoyi calmly lead them inside and calmly say those words, his calmness and detachment were like an invisible wall, separating her from her son. Looking at his expressionless face, she felt not anger, but endless sorrow.

The tears she had suppressed unknowingly fell from her eyes again.

She even wished that Chu Zhaoyi hated them, spoke harshly to them, or greedily demanded compensation for the past eighteen years.

But Chu Zhaoyi didn’t. He calmly told his biological parents.

Your arrival is a burden to me. If you want to use our blood ties to forcefully take me away, I will find a way to resist.

    No love.

    No hate.

In Chu Zhaoyi’s eyes, the three of them were just strangers.

Strangers who would bring him trouble.

They weren’t worthy of even a trace of Chu Zhaoyi’s emotions, not even hatred.

Zhang Anru wanted to speak, to explain, to apologize, but the words choked in her throat, and she couldn’t make a sound. She knew that no matter what she said, she couldn’t make up for the eighteen years of emptiness.

    She was a failed mother.

Xie Tingyun sat there, listening to Chu Zhaoyi’s calm and resolute words, a complex emotion surging in his heart. He thought that after a night of mental preparation, he would be able to calmly face this long-lost son.

But Chu Zhaoyi’s reaction caused him an indescribable pain.

Deep down, Xie Tingyun naturally longed to be able to make up for the mistakes of the past, but Chu Zhaoyi’s indifference was like a sharp blade, ruthlessly cutting through his hopes.

Xie Tingyun took a deep breath, trying to calm his emotions.

He looked at Chu Zhaoyi, at the face that vaguely resembled his own, and his heart was filled with guilt and self-blame. He knew that as a father, he had not fulfilled his due responsibilities.

Back then, outside the delivery room, it was his lack of attention that indirectly led to the tragedy.

“Chu Zhaoyi,” Xie Tingyun finally spoke, his voice a little hoarse, “I understand your feelings and respect your decision. We didn’t come here today to force you to do anything. We just hope to have the opportunity to get to know you, and maybe one day, you can accept us.”

Chu Zhaoyi didn’t respond, just sat there quietly, his eyes without the slightest fluctuation, even a little puzzled.

His inner world was like a barren desert, the oasis of emotion was far away, their tears and pain were like a silent drama to him, he could only watch, but could not empathize.

In his mind, no one would pour out their emotions to him unreservedly, but he felt something completely different from these three people in front of him.

They seemed to be truly sad.

    For what?

For himself, this son they had never met?

    What strange feelings.

He looked at Zhang Anru’s haggard and red eyes. She was just a weak woman. Noticing her uncomfortable gesture of touching her chest, he realized that this woman also had heart disease.

    Just like Chu Yu.

She could die at any time, just like Chu Yu.

    Life was always fragile.

Xie Yuyin, who was on the side, had not spoken, but her wooden and stiff face vaguely showed some sadness.

Whether it was because of blood ties, Chu Zhaoyi vaguely felt a strange sensation coming from his chest, swollen and full, very unfamiliar. His world had no emotional color, only the black and white of logic and facts, so he couldn’t understand.

Looking at Chu Zhaoyi in front of him, Xie Tingyun suddenly felt that Chu Zhaoyi was trapping himself in an invisible glasscover, indifferently and calmly looking at the outside world, but never truly able to integrate into it.

Even Gu Yusen beside him was isolated along with him.

Stubbornly and obstinately squatting in his own glass cover.
