Chapter 64: Life and Death are Predestined

Xu Yuzhe spent some effort to deal with those two zombies. As soon as he returned, he saw Lin Yi’s frenzied state. The others were nowhere to be seen. He didn’t know what had happened earlier.

He walked over, grabbed Lin Yi’s wrist, and shouted, “Stop!”

Although Lin Yi looked bigger than Xu Yuzhe, the slender Xu Yuzhe was able to firmly hold Lin Yi’s arm, preventing him from moving.

After stopping and calming down for a moment, Lin Yi regained some reason. Seeing him calm down, Xu Yuzhe released his hand, which was covered in sticky liquid and emitting a stench, and distanced himself from him. Looking at his hand covered in filth, a trace of disgust appeared on his face.

He took out a handkerchief he carried with him and carefully wiped it clean. Even when it was a foot away from his face, he could still smell the faint stench. Xu Yuzhe frowned, his eyes full of disgust and annoyance. He really didn’t want this hand anymore!

Seeing Lin Yi still standing there foolishly with a corpse hanging on his shoulder, Xu Yuzhe pulled out the short knife from his boot and walked forward, his face even more displeased.

Seeing him approaching aggressively with a knife, Lin Yi took a step back and asked suspiciously, “What are you going to do?”

Xu Yuzhe directly strode closer and used the knife to pry off the zombie head whose teeth were still stuck in Lin Yi’s shoulder, “Don’t you think it’s heavy?” A clear and distinct bloody tooth mark was deeply imprinted on Lin Yi’s shoulder.

Lin Yi said faintly, “It’s numb.”

“You shouldn’t have let it bite you and hang on you for so long.”

Lin Yi said carelessly, “It doesn’t matter, I’ve already been bitten anyway. There’s not much difference between hanging on for a little longer or a little shorter.”

“You should go back first. If you feel any discomfort… go find Doctor Cheng.” Xu Yuzhe’s eyes, hidden in the darkness of the night, were shrouded in a layer of shadow, with cold and dark emotions surging within.

Lin Yi couldn’t see the complexity in his eyes, nor did he realize the other meaning of this sentence. He raised his left hand and rubbed the area below the wound on his right shoulder, “It’s okay, this little injury will heal in a few days.”

“But thank you anyway. If there’s really a problem, I’ll go find Doctor Cheng.”

Having exhausted his abilities and being injured, Lin Yi really had to go back first. It was a pity that he only obtained one Jīngpò, which had to be used to exchange for food. Alas!

“Leave the Jīngpò here, you drive a car back first.”

“Or should I stay here and wait for you?” Considering he’d be there, he should be able to get some food. If he went back like this, it would really be a waste.

The only Jīngpò he had was something he almost risked his life for.

    “No need.”

“But with so many of you, will one car be enough when you come back?”

    “There won’t be many people.”

Lin Yi understood that not many who went in would come out.

Xu Yuzhe shouted into the dark shadows, “You guys come out too.”

One after another, heads emerged from the darkness. Lin Yi was furious, “You just watched me get bitten to death?” He fought for so long, but no one came out to help him.

The crowd avoided his gaze and were embarrassed to reply. After a long while, someone in the crowd whispered, “What could we do if we didn’t watch? If we came out, you’d still be fine, but we would have been infected and mutated.”

They couldn’t be blamed for being cowards, could they? Lin Yi was an ability user and he was in that state, if they came out, it would be suicide. Oh, no, Lin Yi wouldn’t die, but they would be the ones to die.

Lin Yi smiled bitterly, it was just human nature. Why bother humiliating himself? Putting himself in their shoes, he might not have come out to help either.

Xu Yuzhe asked again, “Anyone who regrets it now can leave with Lin Yi.”

Several people chattered and discussed in low voices, asking each other. To be honest, they all wanted to leave, but everyone had a reason to stay.

If they left, not only they themselves would starve to death, but also… their families.

Since they were going to die anyway, they hardened their hearts and decided to fight to the end. This time, as long as they could risk their lives to bring back more food, they and their families could tighten their belts and live for a while longer, maybe another month or two.

Zhang Xiong was very scared, remembering his girlfriend who had forced him to come out by threatening to kill herself.

Before the Mòshì, he was burly and strong, at the prime of his life. After the Mòshì, he joined the infrastructure construction in Half-Moon City.

He was strong and worked desperately every day. Although there was rampant oppression and severe deductions in the base, he still earned more food than others by working several times harder than others.

But he had a girlfriend to support. They had been there since the base was first built. At that time, as long as you were willing to work, regardless of whether you were male or female, you could basically solve the problem of food and clothing with your own hands.

But his girlfriend refused to do any work. In the beginning, when there was plenty of food, Zhang Xiong could barely do the work of two people and earn enough food for both of them.

Gradually, the Mòshì became more and more difficult, and the food earned from doing the same amount of work became less and less. He had to do the work of several people to support himself and his girlfriend.

The increasingly heavy work and the gradually decreasing food, day after day, he couldn’t do it anymore, and he couldn’t get more food. He wanted his girlfriend to work with him, two people working, eating a little less, would be better than being old, weak, sick, or disabled, at least they could live.

She refused, saying that she would rather die than work, but she still wanted to eat her fill. She forced him to go out with the mission team to find food. He couldn’t resist her, and didn’t realize how powerful and terrifying the zombies were now, so he came out.

Now he thought, this relationship didn’t necessarily have to continue. Girlfriends were not something that could satisfy hunger or quench thirst. He should just go back to doing hard labor.

As for her, if she was willing, she could save money with him and live a meager life. If she wasn’t willing, she could find another job.

After thinking it through, he suddenly felt enlightened. He raised his hand and said, “I, I want to go back.” He didn’t have a wife and children to support, nor did he have parents to take care of. He should just be a heartless man!

So Lin Yi and Zhang Xiong helped each other leave. Watching their backs, Xu Yuzhe seemed to think of something and stopped them, instructing, “Lin Yi, as soon as you get out, take him back quickly, don’t delay. You drive on the way, let Zhang Xiong stay in the back. Don’t think about waiting for us to come out. Even if you wait, you won’t get a grain of our food.”

Lin Yi was a little embarrassed that his little thoughts had been seen through, and responded before turning his head away so as not to look at him.

Zhang Xiong didn’t understand, “Why let an injured person drive? I can drive too, I have a driver’s license.”

At this time, who cares if you have a driver’s license, “You need to be alert in the back, remember, always be vigilant, don’t relax.”

    “Oh!”

“Lin Yi, remember, if you feel anything is wrong, go find Doctor Cheng immediately.” This was the rare time Xu Yuzhe repeated the same sentence twice.

He didn’t know if Lin Yi was as he had guessed, but he couldn’t directly tell him to go to Cheng Xie.

Because Cheng Xie was a research fanatic, if Lin Yi actively sent himself to him, then even if there was no problem, it would become a problem.

That’s it, life and death are predestined, wealth and honor are in the hands of heaven!
