    Chapter 17: Settled

Xie YunChuan carried Luo Shuyou on his back, fighting his way back to Lu Yunzhou. By this point, no more zombies were surging out, but the remaining ones were still a handful.

Lu Yunzhou watched Xie YunChuan struggling to move with Luo Shuyou on his back, his hand almost losing its grip on his machete, wanting to swing it at Xie YunChuan’s head. “I’m saying, can you put him down? He’s much safer than we are right now. Can you think about yourself first?”

Xie YunChuan glanced at him, didn’t say anything, and continued to hack at the zombies. Luo Shuyou didn’t even lift his head, holding onto Xie YunChuan’s neck tightly.

Neither of them paid him any attention.

    Lu Yunzhou: “…”

Heh, that’s why you shouldn’t partner with lovebirds. You’ll only get yourself killed from anger.

Lovebirds, single dogs, everyone’s a dog. Who’s better than who? It was his fault for being so worked up. He should just take care of himself; this little couple doesn’t need him to worry.

Okay, so they fought their way home, and by the time they reached the door, they’d pretty much killed them all. A lonely run.

Lu Yunzhou’s eyes were bloodshot from the killing. Despite saying he didn’t care, he still dutifully covered their retreat. After taking care of the last zombie that chased after them, he collapsed on the ground, panting and gasping. “Don’t… don’t run anymore, there aren’t… aren’t any left.”

Xie YunChuan looked back at him. “We’re right at the door. Are you sure you don’t want to run those two steps back home before you lie down?”

Lu Yunzhou turned his head, and the brightly lit door was right in front of him. “What?… Damn it! What was the point? If I’d known, I would’ve just finished them off and slowly walked back. I’m exhausted.”

As he said that, he still staggered and dragged his protesting body up and walked back home. His body was already covered in injuries; lying on the snow would probably cause him to become a corpse on the spot.

As soon as he got inside, Lu Yunzhou collapsed, not wanting to move. He watched Xie YunChuan busying himself, starting a fire, boiling water, and even taking care of Luo Shuyou.

Was this guy really an iron man?

Not only did he carry Luo Shuyou all the way, but he also didn’t kill fewer zombies than he did. How could he not be tired?

“Aren’t you tired? Can’t you sit down and rest?”

Xie YunChuan gave Lu Yunzhou a disgusted look at his dirty state. “If you don’t mind the dirt, I do.”

    “What…?”

Lu Yunzhou reflexively raised his sleeve and sniffed. “Ugh…!”

He couldn’t take it anymore. He hadn’t noticed because he was too tired before, but now that he was aware of it, he couldn’t stand it for even a minute longer. He quickly said, “Boil some water for me too.”

“Get lost. If you want to wash, boil it yourself. I don’t have any for you here.” Xie YunChuan wasn’t used to indulging him at all.

“You have so much here, what’s wrong with sharing a little? I don’t need much, just enough to wipe myself down.”

“There’s none for you. This is for me and Shuyou.”

Lu Yunzhou looked at Luo Shuyou, who had been sitting blankly and silently since they got back, and lowered his voice. “He’s so clean, does he need to wash too?”

“He still got a little dirty. Shuyou is a clean freak.”

Lu Yunzhou didn’t say anything else. Fine, he’d just continue playing dead. He’d get up and boil water to wash himself when he was rested enough. It didn’t matter that much. This was the end of the world, after all; he needed to get used to his own stinky self. He wouldn’t have the luxury of washing whenever he wanted in the future.

After comforting himself like that for a while, he felt like he could endure it again.

Xie YunChuan boiled the water and brought it to the bathroom in the bedroom. He prepared a change of clothes and other things before coming out and walking to Luo Shuyou, extending his hands. “Come on, Shuyou.”

Luo Shuyou looked at Xie YunChuan with dazed eyes and obediently extended his arms for Xie YunChuan to carry him to the shower.

Lu Yunzhou couldn’t bear to watch. Xie YunChuan was truly the perfect boyfriend.

Even when he was at his most affectionate with his girlfriend, it wasn’t even one-ten-thousandth of this. Tsk, tsk.

Thinking of his girlfriend, his expression darkened. Meng Zhi… Luo Shuyou was okay even in this state. If he hadn’t accidentally killed her back then, would she be by his side, just like Luo Shuyou?

No, no… He quickly shook his head, trying to get rid of these strange thoughts. They were different. Lu Yunzhou, don’t make trouble for yourself.

Meanwhile, Xie YunChuan was giving Luo Shuyou a bath. He was obedient, raising his arms when asked, extending his legs when told, like an obedient little kitten, good to a fault.

    “Youbao.” (Young children)

    “Mmm~.”

A soft,nuò nuò voice, with no abnormalities whatsoever. If it weren’t for his vacant eyes, Xie YunChuan would’ve really thought that his Shuyou hadn’t been affected.

How could he not be affected? He was terrified.

“Baobao, don’t think too much. Gege is here. You’ve been fine for so long, haven’t you? Just keep things as usual.”

“Gege~, can I still kiss you in the future?” Luo Shuyou looked at him pitifully.

Xie YunChuan smiled and leaned down to give him a smack on the lips. “Of course, you can. Haven’t you kissed me enough these past few days? See, Gege is fine, isn’t he? Don’t think too much. Take a bath and go to sleep. When you wake up, tomorrow will be better. Nothing will happen, understand?”

    “Mmm!”

Xie YunChuan kissed his forehead and said adoringly, “Baobao is so good.”

After the bath, Xie YunChuan carried Luo Shuyou to bed, tucked him in, and gently patted him to coax him to sleep. He only went out after he fell asleep.

They didn’t mention it, but in a tacit understanding, one carried him back to bed, and the other obediently lay in bed. They both knew that Luo Shuyou wasn’t afraid of the cold or frostbite at this time.

    Lu Yunzhou: “Is he asleep?”

    “Mmm.”

A long silence. At this moment, Lu Yunzhou didn’t know what to say. All words of comfort seemed pale and weak.

Xie YunChuan saw his hesitation and pretended to kick him casually, saying in a relaxed tone, “Have you been lying down enough? If you have, go wash up quickly. You stink.”

Lu Yunzhou silently picked up the boiled water and returned to the guest room.

Leaving Xie YunChuan alone to be melancholic.

He didn’t know what to do either. He didn’t know if he felt more self-blame or more regret at this moment.

Why did he leave Shuyou alone at home that day? Why did he come home so late? Why… did he have to save Lu Yunzhou?

Xie YunChuan covered his face in grief and wept. He didn’t know how to save his lover.

Lu Yunzhou, who came out after showering, stood silently at the door for a long time. He guessed that Xie YunChuan must be regretting why he had to save him.

Yes, if he hadn’t saved him, Xie YunChuan wouldn’t have come home late. If he hadn’t come home late, Luo Shuyou wouldn’t have gone out to find him. If he hadn’t gone out, he wouldn’t have had the accident.

Lu Yunzhou walked over silently with heavy steps. “Is there anything I can do?”

Xie YunChuan had already wiped away his tears and sat quietly. Hearing this question, he only said calmly, “Just don’t hurt him.”

Lu Yunzhou sat down opposite him, seriously and earnestly saying, “I can help you take care of him.”

    “No need.”

“Can you give me a chance to make up for it?” Lu Yunzhou said, “You’re too emotional. With me around, I can at least pull you back at critical moments. You don’t want anything to happen to you either, right? If that happens, no one will take care of him. Then he’ll be at the mercy of others.”

Xie YunChuan glanced at him sideways and relented. “Whatever you want.”

He had to admit that keeping Lu Yunzhou by his side at this time was the smart thing to do. He couldn’t handle everything on his own.

Lu Yunzhou would be the only one who knew Luo Shuyou’s identity and wouldn’t hurt him, and would do his best to protect him.
