Chapter 57 May There Be No Suffering in Heaven

The empty arena didn’t even have a usable stick. Lu Yunzhou, dodging, jumped onto the iron cage and used the iron chains to strangle a zombie to death.

On the high walls of the square arena, the three spectators pointed and commented.

The short one chattered, “Hey! You know what, you really know what! He’s actually got some skills.”

The tall, thin one scoffed, “So what? There are thirty zombies down there. Strangling one is nothing.”

“No, I’m saying… are we putting too many zombies in at once?” The short one felt a chill down his spine just looking at the dozens of bobbing heads.

“Too much what! Didn’t you hear my uncle say that awakened abilities are stimulated in desperate situations? If we release too few, you think we’re walking dogs or something? How can they feel a sense of crisis and be forced into a dead end?”

Chen Xin spoke glibly, not caring about other people’s lives, doing things entirely based on his mood.

“Yes, yes, yes, Brother Xin is right.” The short one quickly massaged Chen Xin’s shoulders and back obsequiously, then asked doubtfully, “Is Dr. Cheng’s method really useful? We’ve been watching every day. So many people have been sent in here, and they all died. Not a single one has succeeded.”

The tall, thin one interjected, “Who cares if it’s useful or not? Just do your job well. It’s not like they’re reducing your pay. Why are you worrying so much?”

The short one thought about it and realized that was true. If no ability users appeared, they could continue doing this job without any surprises. Although they were sometimes hungry and sometimes full, it was much better than those coolies outside who not only couldn’t get enough to eat but also had to work like animals.

Chen Xin lay leisurely on the rocking chair and said, “Hey~! Skinny is right. Shorty, you’re just not as clever as him.”

Lu Yunzhou shouted at the three leisurely people above, “Hey! Spectators, at least throw down a handy weapon. That way, the show can be more exciting, right?”

Chen Xin glanced askance, looked at the tall, thin one, and signaled, “Throw him an axe.”

The tall, thin one deliberately threw the axe into the zombie pile. Lu Yunzhou first ran far away to lure the zombies to the other side, then sprinted back to pick up the axe and fight.

With a weapon in hand, Lu Yunzhou was like a god. He chopped the heads of dozens of zombies in a few strokes. To be honest, compared to the ones he chopped in the snow back then, thirty zombies weren’t even worth mentioning. It was just that the axe in his hand wasn’t as handy as his machete.

The three people on the wall were dumbfounded, not expecting him to be so powerful. The tall, thin one leaned over and whispered to Chen Xin, “Should we release a few more zombies?”

Chen Xin waved his hand, “No need. That’s it for today. Let him go down to rest and let him live one more day.” After saying that, he got up and walked back feeling bored. Then he suddenly turned his head and said softly, “Tomorrow, take the axe away.”

With just a casual sentence, the little axe that Lu Yunzhou had been complaining about just a moment ago was gone the next moment.

The only iron gate in the arena rose with a clang and opened. Lu Yunzhou stared blankly. The people on the high wall shouted, “Hey! Aren’t you coming in? Do you want to stay here overnight?”

Lu Yunzhou snapped back to reality and quickly walked in. He thought it would be a room to rest.

But in fact, it was a dark, square space. Suddenly going from light to dark, Lu Yunzhou’s eyes were a little blurry, and he couldn’t see clearly. He only heard chaotic noises.

*Clap*, the light above his head turned on. Lu Yunzhou was so scared that his body reacted before his consciousness. He took a step back reflexively. Two steps in front of him was an iron fence blocking a dense mass of countless zombies.

He finally knew where the zombies from just now had come from. There were so many here, enough to last!

The light inside wasn’t on. The light above Lu Yunzhou’s head couldn’t illuminate the whole picture. He couldn’t see the end at a glance. He didn’t know how many zombies were lurking in the darkness.

This should be an underground fighting arena. The deep pit where Lu Yunzhou had just been was connected to the room where countless zombies were imprisoned through the small space of a few square meters where he was now standing. He didn’t know exactly how large the room was.

Where he was standing now had an iron fence separating him from the zombies in front. Behind him was the deep pit where the iron gate had just been lowered. On the left and right sides were dark iron gates. Now, he couldn’t see anything moving except for the zombies.

He didn’t know if this place happened to exist or if the people outside had deliberately modified it to create an accident.

With a *snap*, the people outside turned off the light. The entire underground arena fell into darkness, so dark that he couldn’t see his own fingers, including the small room where Lu Yunzhou was, or rather, the narrow, short passageway that couldn’t even be called a room.

Losing his sense of direction, Lu Yunzhou didn’t dare to move much. This was an extreme test of his psychology. If he panicked and lost his footing, he might be grabbed by the zombies in front, who were howling and trying to bite him through the iron fence.

Lu Yunzhou shouted, “Is there anyone there? … Is there anyone there? Someone say something! We can talk about anything.”

There was silence. His voice echoed around, but there was no response.

Instead, the zombies in front made obvious restless noises because of his voice. Lu Yunzhou located the source of the sound and leaned against the iron gate behind him. He slid down the iron fence and slumped to the ground.

Once the tense breath he had been holding in was released, he collapsed completely. He was hungry from not having eaten or drunk anything all day, terrified by the zombie siege he had faced when he woke up, and exhausted from escaping death and killing zombies. At this moment, facing the chattering zombies opposite him, all of it made Lu Yunzhou’s heart hang high, even though his body was relaxed.

Filtering out the noisy zombie roars, he could hear his own heart pounding rapidly. Lu Yunzhou covered his heart with his palm and murmured with emotion, hoping that his heart could beat a little longer.

During the fight, he vaguely heard the three people talking. They seemed to want to stimulate ordinary people to awaken their abilities through extreme pressure. And before him, many experimental white mice had been fed to the zombies alive.

Thinking of the endless zombie horde he had just seen, Lu Yunzhou smiled bitterly. He probably wasn’t far off either!

He had experienced many thrilling and exciting scenes. Not everyone could awaken their abilities when encountering danger. More often, they would head towards death. He thought he was not one of the rare lucky ones.

He thought of Meng Zhi, his girlfriend, the girlfriend who had turned into a zombie at the beginning of the apocalypse and then been killed by his own hand. He thought he was going to accompany her soon.

He was melancholic. How should he face her when he went down there? Would she be willing to wait for him?

No, he was going to hell. Little Zhi was so kind and would surely go to heaven. They were not on the same path.

May there be no suffering in heaven!
