    Chapter 5: Rescuing People

More than a month had passed, and Xie YunChuan hadn’t received any word from Xie Mother, but the villa welcomed a new companion.

During this time, Xie YunChuan had gone out several times. He couldn’t just sit and wait; he had to go out and investigate the situation.

The first time he directly faced those monsters, even he couldn’t help but feel disgusted and terrified. Amidst the fear and trepidation, he could only strike with all his might.

Fortunately, the first strike was a successful headshot. After the first time, he became more skilled, and the subsequent attempts were much easier.

During this period, he had to be constantly vigilant and careful. The villa was too big, including the front yard, back garden, lawn, and waterside pavilion.

Although there were fences to separate it from the outside, this was not a dedicated shelter built for refuge. It couldn’t stop “people” who insisted on coming in.

Although the trips out were dangerous, fortunately, he also gained a lot of information.

Currently, staying in the villa was the safest option. The wealthy district was sparsely populated to begin with, and now even more people had left.

Those who remained were either monsters or elderly people with limited mobility.

In other words, Xie YunChuan and Luo Shuyou were surrounded by only a few mutated beings and harmless elderly people, making it the safest place.

That day, after thoroughly understanding the situation in the villa area, Xie YunChuan decided to risk going out to see the situation outside.

Just as he was about to open the door, Luo Shuyou, whom he had already coaxed to sleep, came out fully dressed.

“YunChuan, I want to go with you~, don’t leave me alone at home…”

He was afraid, afraid of the bloody monsters wandering around outside, afraid that he wouldn’t see Xie YunChuan again, afraid that he would turn into one of them and wander alone in a place he didn’t know.

Although Xie YunChuan avoided him every time he went out, he knew.

    He knew every time.

He just didn’t want to add to Xie YunChuan’s burden, who was already exhausted.

He knew that even if he went with him, he would only be a burden and couldn’t help at all.

But this time, he didn’t want to be sensible anymore. He was tired of anxiously waiting in fear every time but being unable to do anything.

“Shuyou, be good, it’s freezing outside now. You stay here Be good, I’ll go out and take a look, and I’ll be back soon.”

“Like usual, I’ll be back after you wake up from a nap.”

Luo Shuyou didn’t want to go out, nor did he want Xie YunChuan to go out.

He pleaded with a face full of entreaty:

“Don’t go out, I… I’ll eat less in the future. We have so much food, enough to last a long time. Let’s go out when things get better outside.”

Xie YunChuan put down his backpack, walked to his side, and held his shoulders to comfort him, “Be good, I’ll just take a look around, not going far, I’ll be back soon.”

Then he said sternly: “Also, don’t eat less or not eat to save food. You don’t eat much anyway, what will you become if you eat even less?”

“Eat what you like at home, leave what you don’t like for me. Anyway, I have to eat too, right?”

“Eat well, take care of yourself, and I’ll take you out when your eyes get better, okay?”

Thinking of his eyes, Luo Shuyou was persuaded.

    “Oh~.”

What Luo Shuyou didn’t know was that Xie YunChuan’s trip wasn’t just a quick look around. If he knew, he would definitely insist on going with him.

Xie YunChuan did deceive Luo Shuyou. He was going to scout the situation in a more distant place this time. He knew the principle of taking the initiative rather than waiting for death.

He made ample preparations. At least, coming back alive shouldn’t be a problem, otherwise, he wouldn’t be at ease leaving Luo Shuyou alone at home.

Familiar with avoiding zombies, he arrived at the entrance of the residential area. The gate was tightly closed, and there were scattered zombies wandering outside.

After swiping his card and exiting, the sound of the gate opening and closing attracted those few zombies to pounce over. Xie YunChuan, holding an iron rod, hammered them one by one, quickly resolving the situation and concealing himself before other zombies were attracted.

Just as he hid, a large group of zombies that came at the sound lost their target and resumed their aimless wandering.

In just one month, Xie YunChuan could clearly feel that the movements of these zombies were becoming more agile.

Their hearing was already sensitive, and now their speed was gradually recovering. It was even difficult to predict whether they would exceed normal speed in the future.

Given the rate of evolution of these monsters, humans who stagnated would only face increasing difficulties.

Fortunately, the power hadn’t been cut off yet, and the gate of this residential area could still operate normally, automatically closing after each passage. Otherwise, it was unknown how many zombies would pour in.

Thinking of this, Xie YunChuan thought:

He still had to find a way to leave as soon as possible. The power system failure was only a matter of time, and this place would become unsafe before long.

Once the barrier of the gate was gone, not only zombies but also desperate and vicious people lacking resources would target this delicious cake.

Silently avoiding the pursuing zombies, Xie YunChuan quickly left to explore the surroundings.

Because he didn’t tell Luo Shuyou that he was going outside, fearing he would worry, Xie YunChuan couldn’t stay outside for too long. He didn’t have much time.

Two hours later, seeing that it was almost time, Xie YunChuan was heading home when he passed a store.

Seeing a group of zombies pouring into it, he knew that the people inside looking for supplies had been exposed.

This kind of thing was not uncommon along the way. After all, the disaster had been going on for more than a month, and many people had to come out to find food even if they didn’t want to face it.

Either starve to death or go out. Staying at home and resorting to cannibalism wouldn’t last long.

Xie YunChuan was too lazy to care about these people. He was planning to slip past like he had done before.

Unfortunately, he was seen by the people inside. More unfortunately…

    He knew the people inside.

Their eyes met, and he read the shape of their mouth, which was asking for help. It was obvious that if he didn’t act, they would be submerged.

    Damn it!

He put down his backpack, took out his machete. Oh, he thought the previous iron rod wasn’t strong enough, so he replaced it.

One slash for each, like cutting cabbage, he came to the person’s side smoothly and pulled them out.

It had to be said that even though these zombies were much faster than they were at the beginning, they were still incredibly easy to deal with for Xie YunChuan.

Although it was easy, he still had to escape. After all, humans were not perpetual motion machines and couldn’t be like these monsters, who were unaware of pain, unaware of fatigue, and never-ending.

Dragging a person who was half-dead, he still had the energy to snatch their bag along the way. Well, wasn’t that being more than capable?

Running to a sparsely populated wasteland, he finally shook off those monsters.

As soon as Xie YunChuan let go, Lu Yunzhou collapsed. “Hey, were you bitten?”

    “N-No!”

    Lu Yunzhou replied breathlessly.

Xie YunChuan couldn’t stand it and complained ruthlessly, “Are you serious? Such a short distance, and I was dragging you. What a waste of your soldier status.”

“Damn! Try fighting with injuries for two hours and then running like this, and then tell me you aren’t sore!”

“Try what? Putting yourself in that kind of situation is even more useless, okay?”

“I’m too lazy to argue with you. Let me rest for a while.”

Lu Yunzhou was really exhausted, feeling that his breath tasted like rust, and his lungs were about to explode.

Although he maintained the habit of exercising after retiring, he was no match for the strong and sturdy body he had in the military camp.
