Chapter 32: The Source of Calamity

Xie YunChuan found a relatively clean room and spread his own clothes on the bed for Luo Shuyou to sleep on. The White Tiger Cub obediently lay at the foot of the bed, guarding him.

Without Luo Shuyou present, Lu Yunzhou finally dared to approach Xie YunChuan and recount the situation with Lin Yi and the others in detail.

When Lin Yi and his group first arrived at the village, they acted cautiously, intending to quietly find some food and be on their way. However, they didn’t expect to find the place deserted, with no zombies in sight.

After cautiously searching a few households and encountering nothing, they gradually grew bolder, swaggering through the streets and alleys. They searched most of the village but didn’t find much food, and then they were attacked.

Xie YunChuan’s eyes darkened, and he asked Lin Yi, “That zombie only appeared after you brazenly searched most of the village?”

    “Yes!”

“This village was already this clean when you first arrived?”

    “Yes!”

Xie YunChuan surveyed the surroundings of the room. “Have you searched this house before?”

“Yes, we fled here because we knew it was safe.”

“You found the canned meat in the village as well?”

    “Ah…? Oh, yes.”

After asking all he wanted to know with his questions, Xie YunChuan instructed Lu Yunzhou, “I’m going out for a bit. Keep an eye on Shuyou.”

Lu Yunzhou pulled him aside and said in a troubled whisper, “When he gets going, the three of us aren’t a match for him. It’s not that I’m watching over him while you’re gone, it’s that he should spare me.”

Xie YunChuan slightly raised his eyes. “Have some backbone. Don’t you have an ability user here? You just need to make sure they don’t provoke him. He shouldn’t wake up so quickly. I’ll be back soon.”

Xie YunChuan picked up his bag and was about to leave when Lin Yan suddenly spoke up, his voice as faint as a mosquito’s buzz, “You… are you going out to find food? Can you take me with you? I… I can help you find things. I’ll give you all the supplies I find, I just need… just a little bit of food.”

Xie YunChuan smiled contemptuously. “Sure, why not?”

Lin Yan’s eyes lit up. “Really?”

Xie YunChuan: “If you don’t think the zombies will eat you, then come along. After all, the things don’t belong to me.” After saying that, he scoffed coldly and left.

Lin Yan angrily stamped his foot. “What kind of person is that?”

Lin Yi rolled his eyes. “How embarrassing. What kind of person? A normal one. Besides me, the idiot, who would be willing to take a burden like you out? Still expecting someone to escort you? Wake up.”

    Lin Yan said aggrievedly, “Brother~!”

Lin Yi’s ears went numb. He poked at his ears and said, “Ew! Don’t call me so sappily. I’m not your brother. I only promised your mom to send you to your dad. After the mission is complete, you and I will have nothing to do with each other. If you’re hungry, just lie down and save some energy. Don’t just dwell on useless things.”

Lu Yunzhou walked over and whispered, “Keep it down, don’t wake Luo Shuyou.”

Lin Yan said unhappily, “What? Is he, a zombie, afraid of being woken up? Do zombies even sleep?”

    “Shut up!”

This hopeless fellow, Lu Yunzhou really wanted to slap him a few times. If you want to die, don’t drag him down with you.

He didn’t know if zombies slept, but he knew that Luo Shuyou could make the three of them sleep here forever.

Xie YunChuan quickly searched each house one by one. The zombie probably had a lair somewhere. Finding it might yield some useful information.

After searching the last house at the end of the village, Xie YunChuan was somewhat disappointed. Besides some food, there was nothing useful. Fortunately, he found some canned meat that Luo Shuyou was willing to eat.

Just as he was about to leave, a gust of wind blew past, carrying a faint smell of rotting flesh. Xie YunChuan paused, changed direction, and followed the direction of the wind. In front of him, not far from the end of the village, were a few houses near a bamboo forest, which looked like they had been built to raise livestock.

Xie YunChuan perked up and carefully approached. The closer he got, the stronger the stench became. He knew it was impossible for the whole village to be clean. It turned out that the rotting corpses were all here.

He opened each house to check. Piles of bones, all the houses had the same scene, no people, no zombies, quiet and eerie.

He searched carefully and found a small booklet and a map in a pile of bones. This wasn’t the place to examine them closely. Disgusted, he used vines to pick up the seemingly useful items, searched around to make sure he hadn’t missed anything, and then left.

The hot day became dull, and the humid air spread with a breeze. Distant rumbles of thunder could be heard from time to time, it was going to rain.

What seemed like a long process actually only took two hours before he returned to the building.

Seeing Xie YunChuan return, Lu Yunzhou quickly got up and asked, “How was it? Did you discover anything?”

Xie YunChuan threw the booklet and map he found to Lu Yunzhou, without touching them with his hands the entire time.

Lu Yunzhou didn’t have time to think before catching them, and was gagging from the stench. “Ugh! What is this stuff? Why does it smell so bad?”

“Things from a pile of dead people, how could they not stink? Didn’t you want to know what I found? See for yourself.” Xie YunChuan took out one of the few cans he found and handed it to Lin Yi. He didn’t like taking things from others, especially things that others actively gave him.

Lin Yi looked at the can being handed to him, but didn’t take it. “Didn’t we say it would repay the debt of saving my life?”

Xie YunChuan insisted on handing it to him, and Lin Yi tentatively said, “Or… could you exchange it for something else?”

Xie YunChuan retracted his hand. That would work too. He didn’t have many cans to begin with, and Shuyou only ate canned food. It would be great if he was willing to exchange something of equal value.

He spread out the things he found in front of Lin Yi. Lin Yi didn’t dare to take too much, estimating the value and taking a few packs of biscuits.

Lin Yan looked greedily at those things. He knew that there was no share for him. His gaze followed Lin Yi’s movements and landed on the things he took. He and Lin Yi had found the cans together, so he should have a share of these things.

Besides the cans, Xie YunChuan divided the remaining things into two. He handed one share to Lu Yunzhou, who waved his hands in flattered surprise and said, “I don’t need so much. You’re more capable, so you should take the lion’s share.”

Xie YunChuan didn’t waste words with him, put away his share, and went back to the room to check on Luo Shuyou.

In the middle of the night, it was pouring rain outside. Xie YunChuan and Lu Yunzhou were studying the things in the booklet by flashlight. The booklet should be the notes of someone from the village, recording the origins of the man-eating monsters.

    It began like this:

One day, a family of three came to the village. They said they were going to visit relatives in Half-Moon City, but their car broke down on the mountain road.

There was no village in sight, and the tow truck couldn’t get there anytime soon, so they had no choice but to park the car there and come down to look for someone, finding their way here, hoping that we could provide them with some food and lodging.

Liu Family Village was located deep in the barren mountains, and few people came in and out besides young people going out to work. What was left here were mostly elderly people and children, who were kind-hearted.

Seeing that they were a little disheveled but dressed in bright clothes and didn’t look like bad people, some kind-hearted people with spare rooms thought of taking them to stay for the night.

Unexpectedly, they refused, saying that city people were too picky and had too many rules.

Many young people had moved out of the village, some taking their families with them, including the elderly and children, leaving many empty old houses, so they led them into the village and settled them in a secluded empty house.
