Chapter 74: Why Aren’t They There?

Saturday. Gu Yusen came back after his workout, but Chu Zhaoyi was still huddled in the blankets, not willing to get up, though he wasn’t asleep.

“It’s the weekend. I’ll take you out to play. Where do you want to go?”

“Don’t want to,” the little autistic rejected the invitation to go out.

“You’re not bored staying at home all day?”

“Drawing isn’t boring!” Chu Zhaoyi poked his head out of the covers, blinking his eyes, trying to get Gu Yusen to end this cruel punishment.

“Oh, right, your parents’ case is officially closed. The police station said they still need you to go over there once,” Gu Yusen flipped through his phone’s memo. There had been too many things happening lately, mainly having to take Chu Zhaoyi to Mason’s every now and then, and his ears also needed to be checked regularly.

If he didn’t pay attention, Chu Zhaoyi would be like a wild horse running free.

“Closed? Wasn’t it closed before?” Chu Zhaoyi was a little confused; it had been more than two months since this happened.

Gu Yusen didn’t know what the police finally found out. They certainly wouldn’t tell the family the details of their investigation.

“Let’s go over today. If there are no problems, you’ll need to sign,” Gu Yusen took a set of clothes out of the closet for Chu Zhaoyi.

Chu Zhaoyi got up and washed his face, discovering that it seemed to be raining outside. The sky was heavily overcast, and the wind outside was howling loudly.

He went to look at the flowers on the balcony window. In one vase, which held several red roses, someone had abruptly stuck a small wildflower.

It was a bit out of place, but the owner was happy with it.

When Gu Yusen brought Chu Zhaoyi over, Officer Liu was already waiting for them in a room.

“Long time no see, Chu Zhaoyi,” Officer Liu greeted Gu Yusen briefly, his gaze landing on the young man behind Gu Yusen.

“Long time no see,” Chu Zhaoyi obediently replied, following Gu Yusen to a seat.

Officer Liu felt that Chu Zhaoyi had changed a lot. Before, he would definitely have ignored his greeting, but now he had actually responded.

    He inexplicably felt flattered.

Sure enough, a good environment will slowly make people better.

“It looks like you’re being well taken care of by Mr. Gu.”

Gu Yusen was quite proud when it came to this matter. Apart from the time Chu Zhaoyi secretly did bad things, this young man had been slowly improving by his side.

He used to ignore people, but now at least he wouldn’t disregard others.

His smiles had also increased, and his dark eyes would occasionally show some color.

“Oh, Brother Sanmu is very good,” Chu Zhaoyi obediently replied.

“The reason we called you here this time is to talk about your parents’ case.”

    “The investigation results…”

Officer Liu’s gaze remained fixed on the beautiful and fragile young man. Before today, he had asked Gu Yusen whether the current Chu Zhaoyi could handle the blow.

He had only told Gu Yusen about Chu Zhaoyi’s family situation in the beginning. Gu Yusen had never told Chu Zhaoyi afterwards.

Gu Yusen was silent for a moment when faced with this question, but finally nodded.

This matter had to end eventually, and Chu Zhaoyi had to face it. A long pain is worse than a short one, and people can’t live in a fictional utopia forever. He believed that Chu Zhaoyi wouldn’t want to be foolishly deceived either.

“Chu Zhaoyi, your mother disappeared from the sight of those around you under the guise of taking care of you, but in reality, she didn’t stay at home for long, nor did she accompany you. Instead, she sneaked out the back door of your house and hung out with some people to play cards.”

“Ah? No, Mom said she went out to make money,” Chu Zhaoyi blinked in confusion. Back then, his mother had said that she was going out to make money, but this couldn’t be told to anyone else, only he, Dad, and Mom knew.

He had been keeping this secret, but now, hearing Officer Liu’s slander, he was rarely angry and wanted to defend his mother, but he accidentally revealed this so-called “secret.”

Officer Liu sighed deeply as he looked at Chu Zhaoyi’s expression.

“She didn’t. She owned a very hidden card room, opened under the name of her cousin. She spent most of her time hiding there, playing cards, and living a decadent life.”

“Mom took care of me very hard, it’s okay,” Chu Zhaoyi forced a smile. Gu Yusen grabbed his hand, trying to give him strength.

“Your father often rented rooms outside, so, in fact, your family wasn’t as perfect and warm as they presented to you.” Officer Liu continued.

“So, one month before the incident, your mother switched your medication to vitamins. The day before the incident, she induced your illness, and under the pretext of taking care of your health, she didn’t go out to buy medicine for your father. And when your father came home from work, it was already very late, and he took a chance and didn’t go out to buy medicine either.”

“On the day of the incident, your father suddenly had a heart attack. Because timely measures weren’t taken, it led to a temporary state of shock, but in fact, there was a possibility of saving him if he had received timely medical attention afterward. According to your memory, your mother discovered your father’s situation at 6:20 AM, but the time she called 120 was 6:40 AM.”

“So your father’s death was deliberately planned by your mother.” Officer Liu knew this was very cruel.

The young man had always believed that his family was happy and his parents loved each other, but what was the truth? The so-called deep love between husband and wife had actually turned into murder, and the so-called resigning specifically to take care of the child was just a cover for her to live a decadent life in the card room.

So, in the end, what was real?

“Your mother’s death is a bit strange. We can’t completely close the case yet. If she was a murderer, why would she choose to commit suicide after succeeding? This matter doesn’t make sense in itself. We currently tentatively consider it a suicide out of fear of punishment. But the specific situation is still under investigation.”

“Today, we mainly want to say that your father’s case can be closed.”

“If there are no problems, you can sign here.”

Officer Liu said everything in one breath, directly pushing the form in front of Chu Zhaoyi. As a family member, he needed to sign his approval so that they could apply to close the case.

Chu Zhaoyi had no reaction, but Gu Yusen could feel the body in his arms trembling slightly.

After more than ten seconds, he suddenly reacted. He pushed away the form that Officer Liu had pushed onto the table.

    “You’re lying to me!”

“My parents have a very good relationship! Mom would accompany me! Dad would make delicious food for us every night after he came home! When my condition was at its worst, they would always be with me!”

Officer Liu frowned. This sentence was too familiar. Whenever Chu Zhaoyi’s family was mentioned, the answer he gave was always this, strangely similar.

Chu Zhaoyi hugged his head, feeling like small hammers were hitting his head one by one, causing a throbbing pain.

He kept repeating this sentence, repeating this sentence that seemed to be engraved in his mind.

Gu Yusen held him in his arms, patting the young man’s back again and again: “A Yi, Brother Sanmu is here.”

But the young man wasn’t comforted. The stinging pain in his head became more and more obvious, and even his nerves were jumping. Some memories keptStorming in his mind.

Some were his mother’s hysterical roars, his father’s cold eyes standing aside, the sound of a glass breaking on the ground, and the sound of paper being torn apart. Countless fragments floated in the narrow space, eventually falling to the ground.

    Whose memories are these?

    Are they mine?

But why can’t I find them? I can’t find the scenes that should appear in his memory, the scene of parents loving and supporting each other, the scene of them taking care of him when he was sick.

    Why aren’t they there?
