Chapter 7: What Was the Relationship Like Between Your Parents?
The housekeeper placed a glass of water on the table in front of the two of them and left.
Chu Zhaoyi sat obediently.
[We’d also like to understand, what was the relationship like between your parents?]
Chu Zhaoyi found it strange. These questions had already been asked, so why ask them again? But he still cooperated and answered.
“My parents had a very good relationship. My mother would stay with me, and my father would come home every night and make delicious food for us. When my condition was at its worst, they would always be with me.”
Officer Liu found this sentence frighteningly familiar. He had asked Chu Zhaoyi this question three times, and Chu Zhaoyi’s answer was always the same, even eerily consistent.
It was as if he had rehearsed it countless times, saying this sentence when asked.
So, was it true?
Officer Liu tightened his grip on the glass. Before him was Chu Zhaoyi’s obedient face, and countless possibilities flashed through his mind.
“Chu Zhaoyi, do you really not know…”
“What? I can’t hear you, Officer Liu.” Chu Zhaoyi watched Officer Liu’s mouth move, but he couldn’t hear the sound, and he pouted unhappily.
Bullying a person with hearing impairment.
[Logically speaking, your family should have kept heart medication at home due to your father’s condition. So why, when it was discovered on Thursday evening that the medicine had been chewed up by mice, did you not immediately go to buy more?]
“Because I had an episode. On Thursday evening, I don’t remember very clearly. My mother said I had an episode and was hurting myself, so they didn’t dare leave me alone. They took a chance, saying that buying it first thing in the morning shouldn’t be a big deal.”
“It’s all my fault… Why did I have an episode at that time… If I hadn’t, my mother would have gone out to buy medicine, and if my father had taken the medicine in time, would he have been okay?”
Chu Zhaoyi lowered his eyes, sitting there quietly, visibly becoming sad.
He had wondered countless times if… if he hadn’t had an episode that day, would all of this not have happened?
Since his parents’ death, this thought had appeared in his mind countless times, even though the police officers all said it had nothing to do with him and were trying to comfort him.
But he still couldn’t get over this hurdle.
[But, according to our understanding, the last time you sought medical attention was three years ago. In other words, you haven’t had an episode in the past three years, is that right?]
This was the latest information the police had uncovered. The death of the Chu couple was strange, filled with coincidences at every turn.
It just so happened that Chu Zhaoyi had an episode on Thursday night, and it just so happened that the heart medicine was chewed up by mice, and it just so happened that Chu’s father had a heart attack on Friday morning.
Why?
It was very strange, and Chu Zhaoyi’s last episode was three years ago. Logically speaking, his condition should have stabilized, so why would he suddenly have an episode?
“Yes, I haven’t had an episode in three years.”
Chu Zhaoyi nodded. He hadn’t had an episode in a long time.
[Ah Yi hasn’t seemed to have an episode since his parents’ death, his condition is really stable.]
Chu Zhaoyi’s face unconsciously showed a bit of pride when he saw this sentence, “Yes, I’m very stable.”
[Then why did you have an episode on Thursday night? Can you recall what happened? Stop immediately if you feel uncomfortable.]
Chu Zhaoyi thought. The events of that night were blurry. He didn’t actually remember very clearly. “I remember that day, I was drawing, but my mother said my painting wasn’t good and took it away. I was a little unhappy, but my mother said that my paintings had been getting worse recently, and I got a little angry.”
“It’s so strange. This kind of small thing usually wouldn’t affect me, but that day I couldn’t control myself and threw a big tantrum. My mother used to say this… and then take away my paintings.”
Chu Zhaoyi felt some pain as he recalled the previous events, and his hand unconsciously reached for his pocket.
Inside was the medicine he had to take every day.
Officer Liu’s gaze stopped at Chu Zhaoyi’s pocket. Yes, this matter was very strange. Why did Chu Zhaoyi’s condition, which had been stable for three years, suddenly become uncontrollable on Thursday night? Who was stimulating him?
And Chu Zhaoyi, someone who loved to draw so much, why didn’t the Chu family have any of his paintings?
Where had they all been put?
Had his mother taken them away?
Where had she taken them?
[Can I take a look at your medicine?]
Chu Zhaoyi took the small medicine bottle from his pocket and placed it in Officer Liu’s outstretched hand.
“I want to go to the hospital because I feel like my emotions have been very out of control recently,” Chu Zhaoyi muttered, with a childish temper.
“I want to ask Brother Sanmu to take me.”
Officer Liu took out two pills and put them in the small bag he carried with him. Chu Zhaoyi was a little puzzled by his behavior, but the police officer must have his reasons.
[You like your new brother very much? It seems that this adoptive family is very good to you, we’re relieved.]
“Yes.”
[Would you mind if we test your medicine? Because we might suspect there’s a problem with your medicine…]
“The medicine? Sure, but I only have this one bottle left, is it enough?”
[Enough.]
[Two will be enough.]
Chu Zhaoyi said “Oh.”
Officer Liu turned off the recording pen, and put away the medicine he had collected in his pocket, pointed to the door, indicating that he was leaving.
“Goodbye, Officer Liu.” Chu Zhaoyi waved obediently.
Gu Yusen returned home to see this scene, his eyes fell on Officer Liu, and he frowned subconsciously.
“Why are you here?” He used honorifics, but his tone was not welcoming. Why was this police officer so persistent?
His own kid’s condition wasn’t very good to begin with, and his parents’ death was already a sad thing. These police officers kept asking and asking. Couldn’t they investigate themselves? Always picking at other people’s sore spots.
“Ahem, I came to ask Mr. Chu some questions. I’m done, so I’ll leave first.” Officer Liu was a shrewd person, how could he not detect Gu Yusen’s attitude? He touched his nose and decided to slip away first.
“Walk slowly, I won’t see you out.” Gu Yusen hung his coat on the coat rack at the entrance, holding a red rose in his hand, indicating to the housekeeper to see the person out.
“Brother Sanmu!” Chu Zhaoyi was immediately happy when he saw Gu Yusen, and ran over in a hurry without even putting on his shoes.
“Put on your shoes, what are you doing? How many times have I told you?” Gu Yusen’s frown never relaxed, his tone a little heavier.
Chu Zhaoyi stopped at the edge of the carpet, his face a little aggrieved, his two hands grabbing at his sleeves and twisting them back and forth by his side.
“Scolding me…”
“Where am I scolding you? Little deafie can’t even hear. I could scold you eight hundred times with twists and turns and you wouldn’t hear it.” Gu Yusen mumbled, but his feet honestly walked over.
He put the rose that the little deafie had specifically requested in his hand.
He didn’t know what this kid’s hobby was, liking this kind of thing.
He, Gu Yusen, the young master, had lived for so long and had never given anyone flowers before, and a red rose at that.
He was getting a bargain.
