Chapter 42: Onset
They didn’t stay long at the old Gu residence.
Gu’s mother was intent on getting close to Chu Zhaoyi, after all, he was her adopted son in name. However, Chu Zhaoyi was too wary of people, and the interaction left both sides exhausted.
Chu Zhaoyi’s nerves were on edge all day, his palms sweating as he gripped Gu Yusen’s hand.
Gu Yusen took him away after dinner.
Before leaving, Gu’s mother even filled their trunk with things, feeling that they were both like children who couldn’t take care of themselves.
Gu Yusen was speechless. Before Chu Zhaoyi came, his mother certainly didn’t think that way.
No human rights.
Chu Zhaoyi sat in the car on the way back. Only the two of them were in this space, and he slowly let out a breath. He relaxed completely, his stiff back softly leaning against the seat, not wanting to move.
Gu Yusen pulled out a tissue, took the young man’s hand, and wiped the sweat from his palm.
“Very nervous?”
Chu Zhaoyi nodded.
“Want to go home, Brother Sanmu.”
“Alright,” Gu Yusen said, wiping his own hands after wiping Chu Zhaoyi’s, then started the car and took him home.
The sun outside was just right, and it was Saturday, a good time to go out and play. But he had a little wooden block in his car. There was no need to ask; this person definitely wouldn’t agree with the idea of going out to play.
Gu Yusen was pondering all the way. He had already done the psychological counseling this week. Should he take him to check his ears tomorrow to see if the interval between checks was too short?
Forget it, next week.
Then what to do tomorrow?
Oh no, his dad has to continue going on a business trip in a couple of days. He probably has to follow him to the company these days.
So annoying.
Gu Yusen looked at Chu Zhaoyi’s carefree, soundly sleeping face.
Sigh.
Chu Zhaoyi went to bed as soon as he got home. Gu Yusen had things to do and didn’t bother him. He held a few video conferences, and in the blink of an eye, it was evening.
Gu Yusen walked into the bedroom, thinking that he was still asleep, but unexpectedly, he wasn’t.
The young man was sitting quietly on the bed, staring at the window, gazing blankly at the hazy night scene outside. He had just woken up and found that he had slept from a little after three in the afternoon until now. It was pitch black outside, giving him a sense of being abandoned by the whole world.
The surroundings were so quiet that only faint sounds from afar could occasionally be heard. These sounds seemed particularly clear in the tranquility of the moment.
Gu Yusen’s footsteps as he entered the room also seemed to be ignored by him. The young man remained in that position, unmoving, as if time had stopped for him.
Gu Yusen thought he wasn’t wearing his hearing aid. When he walked over, he faintly saw the hearing aid on his left ear.
He had already walked in front of Chu Zhaoyi.
But the young man still didn’t react in the slightest. His eyes were empty and unfocused, as if they had lost their focus, without any reflection, just mechanically looking out the window. His body was slightly leaning forward, his hands unconsciously placed on his knees, his fingers stirring aimlessly, as if weaving an invisible dream.
Even if Gu Yusen was an idiot, he could tell that Chu Zhaoyi’s condition wasn’t right.
“A’Yi?” Gu Yusen walked up to him and gently called his name, but Chu Zhaoyi didn’t respond. His gaze remained fixed on the distance, seemingly immersed in his own world.
Gu Yusen tried to gently touch his shoulder. This time, he got some reaction. The young man slowly moved his head, his gaze slowly focusing on Gu Yusen.
But his eyes still didn’t carry any emotion. It was as if he didn’t recognize the person in front of him. The familiarity in his subconscious mind inexplicably made him wary, and he slowly turned his head again to continue looking out the window.
Gu Yusen was extremely anxious, but he didn’t dare to make any big movements. He could only pull him into his arms. He could feel Chu Zhaoyi’s body temperature, but he could also sense that strange sense of estrangement. His large hands tightly enveloped Chu Zhaoyi’s fingers, trying to transmit his body temperature to him.
Only then did he discover that Chu Zhaoyi’s hands were frighteningly cold. It was as if he was holding a piece of cold jade, and that bone-chilling coldness went straight to his heart through his palm.
Even with such a big movement, Chu Zhaoyi only moved his body slightly, his eyes still empty and confused. He seemed to be pulled by some invisible force, unable to fully focus on Gu Yusen.
Gu Yusen gently stroked Chu Zhaoyi’s hair, feeling its soft texture, and a feeling of indescribable bitterness welled up in his heart.
How could a young man who should be growing up healthily in the sunshine have become like this?
Time passed by minute by minute, and the night outside the window became even deeper. Gu Yusen had no intention of leaving; he stayed by Chu Zhaoyi’s side the entire time.
He didn’t know how long had passed, an hour? Two hours? Maybe longer. The look in Chu Zhaoyi’s eyes began to change slightly. He slowly turned his head, his gaze gradually focusing on Gu Yusen’s face.
As if he was wondering why he was here.
“Brother Sanmu?”
