Chapter 180: The Purpose Isn’t Simple

Wu Zixiao’s words were clear, logical, and well-founded. If Xie YunChuan and his group didn’t have Luo Shuyou, who could see through his ability level, this explanation would have been perfectly reasonable and unassailable.

However, when combined with his level seven ability, everything seemed utterly absurd.

First of all, a simple resource search wouldn’t require a level seven ability user to oversee it. Although Xie YunChuan and the others were surprised to encounter a level seven ability user so close to Li City, assuming Li City’s strength might exceed their previous expectations, level seven ability users couldn’t possibly be so abundant that they’d be assigned to low-level tasks like finding supplies.

Secondly, it was absurd that a level seven ability user leading a level four and a level five ability user could accidentally stumble into a nest of level four or five monkey-like monsters. Even if those monkeys had a numerical advantage, they should have been able to escape immediately. It was impossible for them to be so severely injured, chased so pathetically, and even nearly lose their lives.

Xie YunChuan briefly introduced the names of his group members, without explaining their purpose. If he said they were there to seek refuge, then let it be. Then, he probed, “You all seem quite strong. Why didn’t you escape immediately, instead of fighting them so desperately?”

Wu Zixiao was secretly pleased. It seemed they hadn’t discovered his true ability level. When they arrived to rescue him, he was already exhausted. The abilities he displayed while putting up a last-ditch effort were no stronger than those of a level three ability user in their prime. If they didn’t have an ability user of the same level or higher, they couldn’t possibly have discovered he was a level seven ability user. And that was clearly impossible. Even Xie YunChuan, the strongest among them, was only a level five wood-type user.

One should always be wary of others. Even though these people had just saved Wu Zixiao and his siblings, Wu Zixiao’s level seven crystal core was valuable enough to tempt them to kill for it.

Wu Zixiao said without changing his expression, “We ran as soon as we noticed something was wrong, but those things were too fast. My second sister and I are only level five ability users, and my little sister, Ziling, is only level four, and a water-type user with low attack power. She accidentally fell behind, and we went back to save her, which is how we got entangled and couldn’t shake them off.”

Everyone had their own thoughts. Gu Tangxi and Gu Tangyue clicked their tongues in amazement. Damn it, he was just casually saying he was a level five? Only a level four? What were they, who had risked their lives and barely managed to reach level three and level four by clinging to Xie YunChuan’s coattails, supposed to do? Could it be that Li City was truly a golden land where high-level ability users were everywhere?

Luo Shuyou curled his lip with a cold expression, his displeasure written all over his face. He thought, “This guy is really black-hearted, deceiving even his saviors. We should just let him and his sisters get killed by those monkeys, and then we can swoop in and reap the benefits, collecting their crystal cores. Level six zombie crystal cores aren’t much, but a level seven ability user’s crystal core is a treasure!”

This plan was feasible. The more Luo Shuyou thought about it, the more motivated he became. It wasn’t too late to reap those benefits now. Luo Shuyou wiggled and was about to get up, but Xie YunChuan pressed him back down. Luo Shuyou puffed up his cheeks and glared at Xie YunChuan angrily, complaining, “What are you doing?”

Xie YunChuan, as if knowing the little scheme in Luo Shuyou’s heart, rubbed his head and then repositioned him comfortably in his arms. “Be good, listen to me, don’t make trouble.”

Luo Shuyou angrily turned his face away, refusing to look at him. He wasn’t making trouble, he was clearly about to do something important. This bad ChuanChuan, hmph! He wouldn’t pay attention to him.

Xie YunChuan chuckled and pinched his face, which he had deliberately turned away. He didn’t say anything else. As long as he was still in his arms, it wasn’t a big deal, just a little tantrum. But now wasn’t the time to coax him.

Xie YunChuan’s first reaction to Wu Zixiao’s words was, “How come I didn’t know water-type abilities had low attack power? They’re pretty useful.” But of course, he couldn’t say that out loud. Instead, he said meaningfully, “Wu family of Li City? Is it *that* Wu family?”

Wu Zixiao glanced at the small actions between Xie YunChuan and Luo Shuyou, his expression a little strange. He didn’t know how to react. Were these two brothers a little too close? It wasn’t strange to huddle together for warmth in the snowy weather, but was their interaction… uh… how should he put it? Intimate! Yes, too intimate. It didn’t seem like normal brotherly affection.

Could it be that, after being worn down by the end of the world, the two had shared joy and sorrow, life and death, deeply appreciating the value of family, and thus their relationship had become even deeper, leading them to be inseparable? But Luo Shuyou’s fair and tender appearance didn’t seem like he had suffered any hardships. He was even more pampered than his two sisters.

Wu Zixiao, a straight man who had been sheltered by his family in the apocalypse and hadn’t experienced much of the darkness of human nature, would never have imagined that the “brothers” he thought he saw were actually lovers.

In fact, in the apocalypse, male-male, female-female, and male-female relationships were all very common. Not only was there the despicable human trafficking, but often, two people who had gone through hardships and joined together didn’t care too much about gender or emotion when something happened between them.

“Yes,” Wu Zixiao replied. Regardless of which “that” Xie YunChuan was referring to, the Wu family that was famous in Li City was just them, so it was probably the right one.

Xie YunChuan then asked, “Is Wu Changbai related to you?”

Wu Zixiao scrutinized Xie YunChuan for a moment and blurted out, “He is my father.” For someone to clearly state his father’s name, this person was probably not just here to seek refuge. Were they trying to seek refuge with relatives? It seemed his plan to recruit them had been in vain.

Xie YunChuan’s mind raced, and he suddenly understood. As expected, he was Wu Changbai’s own son. No wonder he was a level seven ability user. Although the Wu family was ranked last among the four great families of Li City, their strength was still not to be underestimated. The four great families didn’t stand on equal footing, but they were also a system of checks and balances.

Then they couldn’t possibly just be out looking for supplies. They must have an extremely important mission. A task important enough to send the actual son and daughters…, the level seven ability user son was one thing, but even the level four and level five daughters were here. The only thing Xie YunChuan could think of was one thing: the Crystal Soul!

Crystal Souls were spiritual beings, and they would soon be guarded by companion beasts after they were born. The best way to take them quickly was to subdue the companion beast, and companion beasts of various attribute Crystal Souls would be closer to hosts with the same attribute. The Ice Crystal Soul was with Xie YunChuan, and the Water Crystal Soul was taken by Shen Ye. Presumably, it was already inside someone in the Su family.

These three siblings had an ice-type ability, a wind-type ability, and a water-type ability… so it was–the Wind Crystal Soul?

Had they obtained it now or not? Xie YunChuan didn’t have a wind-type ability, and his perception wasn’t strong. He subtly glanced at Xu Yuzhe, but couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary. There was no way to tell, Xie YunChuan could only think of finding an opportunity to talk to Xu Yuzhe later.
