    Chapter 25: Zombification

Chen Zhiqiang left, and didn’t return even after dark.

The four, used to their comfortable lives, didn’t discuss taking turns to keep watch. Each thought, “It’s not just me, the others will pay attention.” So, they all went to sleep without a worry.

In the latter half of the night, Lin Jinshu woke up convulsing. She felt something inside her was about to burst out. For the past couple of days, she had felt vaguely unwell, but she hadn’t given it much thought. In the end of the world, it was normal to be hungry one moment and full the next. Feeling unwell was also normal.

Under the cover of night, she couldn’t see her pale face and bloodshot eyes. She just felt incredibly thirsty, wanting to drink something, and incredibly hungry. Her teeth chattered uncontrollably, wanting to tear and bite.

It didn’t make sense. They had just finished their food reserves earlier that day. She shouldn’t be this hungry. She shifted her body, trying to find a more comfortable sleeping position, wrapped her clothes tighter, and forced herself to sleep.

As dawn broke, the east turned white. Lin Jinshu, who had finally fallen asleep, woke up again. This time, she was awakened by an enticing aroma of fresh meat.

“Who’s hiding something good? It smells so good, it’s making my mouth water!” She stretched her head out in a bizarre posture, sniffing east and west.

If the other three were awake, they would have seen that her ghostly face was no longer human. Sadly, the unsuspecting three were sound asleep.

Following the scent, she crawled next to one of the girls, staring blankly at her exposed, snow-white neck. “So tempting… a bite would be such a delightful delicacy!”

She pounced, biting through the girl’s blood vessels. Blood gushed out, and a heart-wrenching scream startled the other two awake. The girl who was closer had blood splattered on her face. Opening her eyes, she saw the two locked in a gruesome bite. She was stunned.

She watched as the girl being bitten stopped struggling. Then, the person on top of her released her and looked up. Her face was pale and grey, her eyes bloodshot, and her mouth was a bloody mess. She realized what was happening and tried to run, but it was too late.

Lin Jinshu lunged, knocking her down and biting. She instinctively reached out to block, and an excruciating pain shot through her. Her face contorted in pain as she turned to Wen Fan. “Teacher… save… save me.”

Wen Fan, still dazed from being woken up, stared blankly at the scene. He couldn’t help but feel a surge of relief as he ran for the door. “Good thing I was further away from them, or I’d be the one being attacked. ” He didn’t care about the other girl’s cries for help.

“Why save her? She’s been bitten. Saving her would just bring more trouble.”

As if he would have saved her even if she hadn’t been bitten.

Xue Xiaoxiao, seeing that Wen Fan was abandoning her, found strength from somewhere. She pushed Lin Jinshu away, tearing off a large piece of flesh from her arm, which immediately gushed with blood.

While Lin Jinshu was falling to the ground, she dragged her injured arm and fled, chasing after Wen Fan. It wasn’t that she still had hope in Wen Fan, but that Wen Fan was likely going to find Chen Zhiqiang. Following him would lead her to Chen Zhiqiang.

Chen Zhiqiang was such a good person, he would definitely save her.

Lin Jinshu, after getting up, didn’t continue chasing them. She continued to devour the girl on the ground. She had never been full during this period of wandering. Even as a changed creature, she was still a hungry ghost.

The girl on the ground was painfully awakened. Opening her eyes, she heard cracking sounds that grew clearer. With great effort, she slightly raised her head to look at the source of the pain on her body. She saw the monster Lin Jinshu, head buried, devouring her flesh. Her intestines were being pulled out. She frantically tried to move, but couldn’t.

Unable to live or die, she could only be butchered like a fish on a chopping board, consciously experiencing the pain of her flesh being torn apart, awaiting the gradual loss of her life. For the first time, she hated why the zombie virus didn’t take effect immediately.

Underneath a large rock, Chen Zhiqiang, who had been sitting there all night, heard a blood-curdling scream coming from the direction of the dilapidated house. Without hesitation, he grabbed his backpack and ran back.

See, he was just that kind of person. Even in this situation, he was worried about those people and was rushing back to save them.

He ran back while Wen Fan and the others ran out, their paths perfectly missing each other.

When he returned to the dilapidated house, there was only a mangled corpse left. He couldn’t even recognize who it was.

    “What happened here?”

No one answered him. He didn’t know if the others had been infected, if they had run away, or if they had turned into zombies and left. He took out the cleaver from his bag, held it in his hand, and carefully searched the surroundings.

Don’t ask him why he had a broken cleaver. Not everyone could afford to carry a machete.

Xue Xiaoxiao only dared to follow Wen Fan from a distance. If she got too close, he would definitely attack her.

Wen Fan, on the other hand, thought that Xue Xiaoxiao had already turned into a zombie. He didn’t dare to attack her either. He ran around in a panic, praying to find Chen Zhiqiang quickly. He regretted not chasing after him last night. Then, none of this would have happened.

Turning the corner, he encountered “love”—his little darling had come online! He hadn’t found the life-saving Chen Zhiqiang but had encountered Lin Jinshu, who was full and wandering outside.

Lin Jinshu: “I was already full, but who would refuse a buffet that comes to their door?”

With a wolf in front and a tiger behind, Lin Jinshu lunged at Wen Fan in a moment of hesitation. He ran back in terror, only to see that Xue Xiaoxiao was running even faster than him.

Wen Fan couldn’t help but curse, “Damn it, why is she following me like a ghost if she hasn’t zombified?”

You chase me, I chase you—a new mode of pursuit game had begun.

The rapid running accelerated the spread of the virus in Xue Xiaoxiao’s body. As she ran, her eyes began to turn red, her steps became erratic, and she twitched from time to time.

Finally, she crashed. Wen Fan, running behind her, bumped into her and almost tripped. He steadied himself and cursed as he ran, “Why the hell did you stop again? Trying to die?”

Xue Xiaoxiao twitched and convulsed, joining the ranks of the predators.

She was already close to Wen Fan, and Wen Fan, having run for a long time, had unknowingly slowed down. He didn’t expect Xue Xiaoxiao behind him until he was knocked to the ground. He frantically pushed and kicked backward, shouting for help.

Just as Lin Jinshu was about to catch up, Chen Zhiqiang suddenly appeared from somewhere and chopped off Xue Xiaoxiao’s head with a knife. His hands trembled slightly. He couldn’t care less and pulled Wen Fan up to run.

Wen Fan ran much faster being dragged by Chen Zhiqiang. He gasped for breath and said, “You… you chop her!”

Chen Zhiqiang: “I… I can’t bring myself to do it.”

    Wen Fan scolded, “Worthless!”

Even so, he didn’t offer to take the knife from Chen Zhiqiang and do it himself. He only focused on scolding others, not ashamed of being a coward.

Chen Zhiqiang couldn’t bring himself to do it because she was a former comrade. Wen Fan, on the other hand, was purely afraid.
