    Chapter 4 Fulfilling the Promise

    He Yuncheng’s smile visibly faded.

He teased others, but ended up being the one affected first.

Lin Shuangxu walked around his arm and stood up. He slowly walked to the entrance of the military tent, turned back to see him standing there dumbfounded, and asked, “Do you still have matters in the army? Are you leaving with me, or should I return to the General’s Manor and wait for you?”

He Yuncheng’s eyes were fixed on him, and after reacting for a moment, he decisively answered, “Together.”

The carriage bounced along the road back to the General’s Manor, the two of them sitting opposite each other inside.

Lin Shuangxu still had He Yuncheng’s fox fur cloak draped over his shoulders, his eyes lowered, his expression indifferent, not saying a word.

From the moment they met, He Yuncheng’s eyes had been glued to him, not at all shy in the narrow space.

Lin Shuangxu didn’t speak, and neither did he. He simply kept looking at him the whole way. Although he didn’t make any rash movements, Lin Shuangxu could clearly sense the restless undertones about him.

Suddenly, Lin Shuangxu raised his head, meeting his gaze, and asked, “Does the food in the military camp not suit your taste?”

He Yuncheng raised his eyebrows, not expecting that the first thing he would ask was such a question.

    He didn’t answer.

Lin Shuangxu then lowered his eyes again, and softly said, “You’ve lost weight.”

After all, they had been together since childhood, and no matter what, he still felt heartache for him.

He Yuncheng’s heart softened, his conscience being accurately kneaded.

However, as a general who commands battles, he could naturally see through some tricks of manipulating people’s hearts. It was very possible that Lin Shuangxu was saying this on purpose, with the goal of making him feel guilty.

But so what if he saw through it? He still felt guilty anyway. What could he do? He simply couldn’t bear to see Lin Shuangxu frown.

Lin Shuangxu then said, “If I hadn’t come to find you, were you planning to never come home again?”

He Yuncheng licked his lips. He had a lot of words in his stomach, but in the end, he only said one sentence: “I was wrong.”

    Lin Shuangxu ignored him.

An hour later, the carriage returned to the General’s Manor.

Hearing the movement, the butler quickly came out of the courtyard to greet them. Seeing that it was He Yuncheng who had returned, he exclaimed in surprise, “Good heavens! It’s so cold, General, why are you dressed so thinly!”

He had given his fox fur cloak to Lin Shuangxu, and had frozen all the way back.

“Quick, come inside, the food is all prepared!” The butler led the way, and He Yuncheng looked at Lin Shuangxu, waiting for him to go first.

Outwardly arrogant and domineering, he was used to acting obedient and pleasing in front of Lin Shuangxu.

Once they entered the main hall, the butler pointed to a table full of food and said, “Young Master specially instructed the kitchen to make these. They’re all the General’s favorites.”

He still remembered the scene of He Yuncheng’s departure that day. The two had closed the door and had some unknown conversation, resulting in such an unpleasant atmosphere, angering the general so much that he left directly. So many days had passed, and the Young Master had to personally fetch him back.

Thinking of easing the relationship between the two, the butler added, “General, you don’t know, but these days you’ve been away from the manor, the Young Master has been thinking about you.”

He Yuncheng sat down at the dining table, not responding.

Lin Shuangxu sat several seats away from him, unhurriedly picked up his chopsticks, and said to the butler, “You’ve worked hard, go ahead.”

The butler really wanted to tell He Yuncheng in detail how unhappy and lacking in appetite the Young Master had been these past few days, in the hopes that he would grow a conscience and stop disobeying the Young Master.

But seeing Lin Shuangxu’s indifferent expression, he didn’t dare to say anything more, and said “Yes” before retreating.

Lin Shuangxu was a proper person. He Yuncheng ate like a ravenous wolf in the military camp, but when he returned home, he tried his best to be gentle.

When he wasn’t speaking, he couldn’t help but let his thoughts run wild, his mind filled with Lin Shuangxu’s words, “You can do anything.”

Lin Shuangxu knew how to deal with him.

But what if he was truly worse than a beast, and wasn’t deterred by those words?

If he really did something to him, how would he react?

A piece of meat was placed in He Yuncheng’s bowl. Lin Shuangxu had given it to him.

“Last time, you said the braised meat was too sweet. This time, I told the kitchen to use less maltose. Try it.”

As if nothing had happened, Lin Shuangxu cared for him so naturally.

He Yuncheng looked at the red meat in his bowl, feeling really awkward in his heart.

If he wanted him to feel ashamed, wanted him to feel like he had nowhere to hide, okay, Lin Shuangxu was very good at it.

He lost his appetite, put down his chopsticks, and stood up, saying, “I’m full.”

Seeing this, Lin Shuangxu also put down his chopsticks, looked up at him, and didn’t say anything.

He Yuncheng said, “I’m going to take a bath. I’m covered in dust. It’s getting late, so after you finish eating, go back to your room and rest early.”

After speaking, he didn’t look at Lin Shuangxu’s reaction and got up to leave.

He couldn’t accurately describe his mood. It was a mess. He seemed a little angry, but he didn’t know who he was angry at. Not Lin Shuangxu, maybe himself.

After washing away the dirt with hot water, He Yuncheng calmed down a lot after his bath.

Outside, it was already dark. He really hadn’t rested well these past few days in the military camp, but now he couldn’t sleep either. He found a book on military strategy and sat in his room silently reading.

The night grew deeper, and the General’s Manor was very quiet. It seemed to be snowing again, falling heavily, accumulating a layer on the ground. Stepping on it made a crunching sound.

That was the sound of footsteps.

    Getting closer and closer.

He Yuncheng’s gaze, which had been on the book, gradually became erratic. He listened carefully to the sounds in the courtyard, counting those familiar footsteps.

The candle on the desk flickered, and then someone knocked on his door.

His heart suddenly beat faster. He Yuncheng hesitated for a moment, put down the book, and got up to open the door.

The person outside the door was holding a dim lantern in his hand. Snowflakes fluttered down, landing on his moon-white cloak, setting him off as otherworldly.

His eyelashes cast a shadow under the lantern. Lin Shuangxu was cold and detached all over, but his pair of peach blossom eyes were naturally amorous. When he looked at people, he unknowingly seduced them.

He Yuncheng didn’t say a word, not telling him to come in.

And after standing there for a moment, he took the initiative to enter the room himself.

Putting down the lantern, Lin Shuangxu stood in the room and looked around. He saw the open book on military strategy on the desk and asked, “Are you reading?”

He Yuncheng closed the door behind him, not getting close, and stood at the doorway nodding his head, “Yes.”

“Take your time reading, I’ll wait for you.”

After speaking, Lin Shuangxu walked towards the bed, and when he got there, he sat directly on the edge of the bed.

Wait for me… to do what?

He Yuncheng’s breathing was a little hot. He stood there, not moving.

Lin Shuangxu didn’t urge him to continue, only patiently waiting.

He had come to fulfill the promise.

    Was there something inappropriate?

And He Yuncheng didn’t know what he was thinking at the moment. Lin Shuangxu told him to take his time reading, and he actually went back to the desk and picked up the book on military strategy again.

He wanted to calm himself down, but how could he calm down in this situation?

His thoughts became disordered uncontrollably. He didn’t take in a single word, threw the book away, and got up to walk towards Lin Shuangxu.

He looked down at Lin Shuangxu, his gaze changing from anxious to calm.

    This was what you wanted.
