Chapter Index
    “Gu Yusen”

“Before Li Yurong committed suicide, a nurse said she overheard Chu Zhaoyi and Li Yurong talking on the phone. Why did she change her story today and say she misheard?”

Before Gu Yusen left, Officer Liu stopped him and asked this.

Although it was a question, his tone was very certain.

Police always like to ask questions while already knowing the answer.

“She misremembered, perhaps? You’ve been in this profession for so long, you must have seen a lot of this sort of thing, right?”

Gu Yusen didn’t turn around, waving his hand and leaving these words behind before departing.

Officer Liu watched Gu Yusen and Chu Zhaoyi’s retreating figures and sighed deeply.

Gu Yusen took Chu Zhaoyi back home.

Chu Zhaoyi didn’t like crowded places, and today’s competition venue was quite packed. He was uncharacteristically listless, sitting in the passenger seat without saying much.

He seemed deflated upon entering the house.

There wasn’t a trace of the joy of victory.

The heavy trophy was carried in by Gu Yusen.

Chu Zhaoyi headed straight for the bedroom as soon as he entered. He was too tired and just wanted to lie down.

“Chu Jiaojiao, don’t sleep yet. Come over and eat something first.” Gu Yusen put the trophy on the table, his other hand carrying the Xianpin Pavilion meal that his assistant had just delivered. Today’s drama had taken up some time, and the competition had ended at two in the afternoon. He had been worried about Chu Jiaojiao’s stomach pain the whole time.

Fortunately, Chu Jiaojiao seemed fine, which seemed to imply that his careful tending was useful to some extent.

“So sleepy, Brother Sanmu,” Chu Zhaoyi’s muffled voice came from the bedroom, sounding like he was already lying on the bed.

Gu Yusen couldn’t help but smile, imagining Chu Zhaoyi’s posture.

Gu Yusen, who never liked eating in the bedroom because he always felt the smell lingered, walked into the bedroom with the lunchbox without changing his expression and scooped the lazy thing out of bed.

“Eat a little. You’ll get a stomachache if you don’t.”

Gu Yusen felt like he had been playing the role of a mother for too long, becoming familiar with taking care of people.

“Okay…” Chu Zhaoyi always listened to Gu Yusen. He slowly got out of bed and dragged his slippers to sit across from Gu Yusen.

“Why are you so listless? Are you unhappy?” Gu Yusen handed him a box of rice and thoughtfully put two pieces of meat in it for him.

    “No… just sleepy.”

Chu Zhaoyi listlessly shoveled food into his mouth, only eating a few bites before putting it down, not wanting any more.

Gu Yusen didn’t force him to eat more, letting him go to sleep. He quickly finished his own meal, packed all the boxes into a trash bag, and threw it away.

Chu Zhaoyi had a dream. The dream took place on the day he graduated from junior high school when he went to school to get his diploma and temporarily escaped Li Yurong’s control.

He dreamed of holding the paternity test he had done using hair stolen from Zhang Anru.

Dreamed of standing at the Xie family’s door, witnessing a scene of maternal love and filial piety.

Dreamed of fleeing in panic, getting drenched in the rain.

Dreamed of turning off his phone that night, ignoring Li Yurong and Chu Yu, and then the stinging pain of a slap on his face when he returned home.

After Chu Yu found out where he had gone, he became violent towards him. He could feel warmth coming from his ears, as if some liquid was running down his cheeks.

He raised his hand to touch it, and it was scarlet.

He seemed to understand that he had lost something. Chu Yu’s furious voice in his ears gradually blurred, and he couldn’t even see his distorted face in front of him.

Before losing consciousness, he rarely thought.

His life was different from others.

He had always had a weak perception of emotions and was rarely affected by his mood for no reason.

    But that night, he knew.

    He was a little sad.
