    Chapter 5

Compared to the pitch-black warehouse, the corridor outside was much brighter. Magic lamps were installed on the walls every few meters, noticeably brighter than those in the patrol team’s hands. However, they still couldn’t compare to the electricity-guzzling incandescent lights of Yan Yunqing’s original world. He wondered what the energy source for these magic lamps was.

Recalling the world-building of “Demon King,” Yan Yunqing guessed that the technology of this other world was roughly equivalent to early 18th-century Europe on Earth.

There weren’t many products of the Industrial Revolution. Most things relied on manual labor, but due to the existence of magic, some items far surpassed the technology of the era.

Yan Yunqing remained vigilant; the current environment was too bright, making it unfavorable for him to hide.

Hearing footsteps and voices not far away, Yan Yunqing deftly found a blind spot and completely concealed himself.

If there were vision prompts at this moment, he could activate stealth, sneak attack from behind, slit necks, and then perform a forward roll and jump to perfectly escape this level.

So, why was it that the single-player version was clearly a construction game, but the online version had become a holographic, hell-difficulty version of “〇〇 Hero: Crazy Auction House”?

Yan Yunqing listened as the footsteps grew closer, and the conversation between two patrol members reached his ears.

“Did the Fourth Squad get attacked just now? They looked quite disheveled.”

“I heard it was a cargo riot, but with the suppression of the magic restriction formation, how could the Fourth Squad be injured by a cargo riot? How lame.”

“It seems they even sought help from the guard captain? Deman is getting more and more useless. And he used to be the guard captain!”

“No choice. After all, he was seriously injured on his last mission. What kind of swordsman can’t even hold a sword steady?”

A burst of laughter accompanied their footsteps as they moved away from Yan Yunqing.

Yan Yunqing waited quietly for a minute, confirming that they had left before cautiously peeking out and continuing to walk outwards with his dagger.

“It seems that patrol captain was quite a character before,” Lillian said. “Indeed, even I almost fainted from the little mermaid’s sonic attack. That captain could still stand there and instruct his subordinates to leave; not simple, not simple!”

Yan Yunqing didn’t really feel much from the sonic attack. After all, he only felt dizzy for a moment and, at most, a slight discomfort in his ears.

He even felt that this was due to the sudden change in species.

Isn’t there that saying? That a cat’s hearing is three times that of a human’s.

Cat-person or something, similar to a cat? Maybe?

Yan Yunqing focused on avoiding the patrol team’s inspections, and with the help of his speed-boosting pocket watch and his overly sensitive hearing, he accidentally stumbled out of the area filled with patrols.

When he saw the first person who wasn’t dressed as a patrol member but was wearing luxurious clothes, Yan Yunqing let out a heavy sigh of relief, then tensed up again.

Look at what he looks like now?

A tattered piece of cloth barely covered his vital areas, with the excess used to tie the glass bottle containing Lillian. He had a pair of cat ears on his head and a cat tail dangling behind him, unconsciously twitching back and forth, revealing his unease.

His current attire didn’t look like someone attending an auction. Anyone could tell from his appearance: this is a cat beastman who escaped from somewhere.

Yan Yunqing hid in the shadows and, taking advantage of a moment when no one was around, darted into a place that looked like a washroom. He hid in a stall, locked the door, and finally let out the breath he’d been holding.

He was temporarily safe, but this wouldn’t last long. Maybe the patrol captain had already informed the auction house about what happened in Warehouse #6, and soon people with even greater strength would come to investigate.

The magic fluctuations in the warehouse couldn’t be hidden, and the iron cage he escaped from was still lying there. If it weren’t for the mermaid’s sudden sonic attack, he would have already been discovered. With his fragile body, even a lock-blood cheat wouldn’t withstand so many people surrounding him.

Not to mention what would happen if the lock-blood cheat was discovered… Yan Yunqing suspected he would be dissected. This other world had alchemists, a science that wasn’t science at all!

Moreover, he had stolen a “cargo” that looked very valuable. Yan Yunqing lowered his head, looking at Lillian, the innocent elf in her juvenile stage, inside the glass bottle.

Even if Yan Yunqing didn’t know much about the current timeline of this other world, he knew the value of elves from the many fantasy novels and anime he had seen.

The elf race in “Demon King” was also very rare, and the juvenile cubs were watched over by the entire clan.

He was probably about to be hunted down by the entire auction house.

Sighing, Yan Yunqing regained his spirits, manipulated the game panel a few times, and picked and chose from the costumes he had bought with real money when playing “Demon King,” putting together a set of clothing that wasn’t too conspicuous but looked expensive upon closer inspection. He confirmed the change.

Lillian watched in amazement as the disheveled little cat transformed before her eyes. The tattered cloth turned into soft silk, embroidered with intricate patterns in dark-colored thread. Upon closer inspection, the patterns were extremely similar to some ancient magic spells she had seen in the elven library, filled with mysterious power.

It was more like magic than magic itself. No magician would be bored enough to study a useless magic spell like one-key costume change.

“Great Elf King above,” Lillian’s mouth widened. “Did you really not lie to me? You don’t look like an ordinary beastman at all.”

As far as she knew, the beastmen’s heritage wasn’t long. Even the royal family currently looked like they drank blood and ate fur. This set of clothing, which looked expensive and contained a rich magical history, shouldn’t be on an ordinary beastman.

Yan Yunqing adjusted his clothing, removing some overly conspicuous ornaments, trying to make himself look more inconspicuous.

“Yeah, yeah, actually I’m the Beast God,” Yan Yunqing said casually.

Lillian pouted, “If you want to lie to me, at least find a better excuse. The era of gods has passed for so long, how could a Beast God suddenly appear?”

    Huh?

Yan Yunqing paused in adjusting his clothes. “The era of gods has been over for a long time?”

If he remembered correctly, in “Demon King,” after his main character established an empire, he ushered in an era of co-governance by the Demon King and the gods. Although five of the six upper gods were dead, there was still one life goddess left, and there were quite a few minor gods who survived the God War.

Could it be that none were left now?

“You don’t know?” Lillian asked in return. “This seems like common sense.”

Yan Yunqing shut his mouth. As a player who had transmigrated from another world, he didn’t even have a chance to see the introductory cutscenes, so how could he know these ‘common sense’ things?

After escaping, he had to properly understand the historical background of the era he was currently in.

If this were any other college student, they would probably lie down and accept their fate. Fortunately, Yan Yunqing was still a ‘savior’ in reserve, who had just graduated from high school and was full of energy.

Yan Yunqing tidied himself up and faintly heard the outside starting to become noisy. Maybe the auction house had already discovered that a cat-person and an elf had escaped from the precious cargo.

Yan Yunqing held up the glass bottle. “Now, we need to solve this glass bottle imprisoning you. Do you have any ideas?”

Lillian immediately threw aside her thoughts of exploring and flew up and down inside the glass bottle. “Let me think, let me think!”

“I didn’t have any contact with alchemy formations when I was in the forest, so starting with the formations probably won’t work.” Lillian tapped her chin, putting on a thoughtful look.

“But I’ve seen some… relatively ancient spells in the library before, but I tried to use them and completely failed.”

“Your magical talent is so strong, maybe you’ll succeed?”

Lillian looked at Yan Yunqing expectantly. “Want to give it a try?”

She recited the magic spell written in ancient elven language in front of Yan Yunqing. The more Yan Yunqing listened, the stranger the expression on his face became. He couldn’t help but touch his nose, feeling his cheeks burning. He hesitated for a moment.

“Are you sure you didn’t misremember this spell?”

“How is that possible!” Lillian retorted. “Don’t think that just because I’m a newborn elf, I’m not talented in magic! The elders praised me for it!”

Yan Yunqing didn’t believe her. “How did they praise you?”

    “Ahem!”

Lillian cleared her throat, crossed her arms, and imitated the elders in the clan, saying with a profound air: “My disciple Lillian has the bearing of an Elf King!”

If she weren’t only the size of a palm, looking like a small figure, perhaps her words would be more credible.

Yan Yunqing twitched the corner of his mouth. “Maybe your elders were just Coax?” (Coax:Coax the kids to coax, Coax to deceive)

Lillian’s neck turned red with anger. She flew up and down in the narrow space of the glass bottle. “That’s not true! I’m really amazing! I’m—”

Lillian’s words stopped halfway, stuttering. She stammered for a long time without saying anything, looking very suspicious.

“You’re—?” Yan Yunqing repeated her words. Seeing Lillian tugging at the hem of her clothes, not knowing what to say, he changed the subject. “Okay, then I’ll try it. This strange… spell, is it really recorded in your elven library?”

“Of course!” Lillian put her hands on her hips. “That’s a very precious and ancient book. I secretly sneaked in to see it while the library elder wasn’t paying attention! It’s said that it’s a valuable manuscript left by the first Elf King!”

    Yan Yunqing was silent. Really?

Why was he silent? Anyone who heard a bunch of rainbow farts praising themselves would be silent, right?

Yes, the long string of ancient spells that Lillian recited was actually just a series of rainbow farts praising the Demon King. The wording was very direct and explicit, and it was clear that only a die-hard fan of the Demon King could say it.

The only thing that could be considered a spell was probably the last sentence: “Great Demon King, please grant me the courage to move forward and unlock the chains that bind me!”

Was this spell too embarrassing? If the Demon King wasn’t the one being called out, Yan Yunqing might have been able to say it without batting an eye.

As for such die-hard fan quotes, Yan Yunqing, the Demon King himself, had seen many while playing the game. He even thought that “Demon King” wasn’t an honest construction game but a galgame with a larger scale.

If Yan Yunqing himself hadn’t been ascetic and lacking that particular interest, he would have turned this game into a harem game.

It’s just that in his memory, that taciturn, aloof, and elegant familiar, the Elf King… didn’t seem like someone who could say such fanatical remarks?

Good for you, Elf King, two-faced, pretending to be a flower on a high peak on the surface, but secretly being a simp for the Demon King behind the scenes, huh?
