Chapter 3
Yan Yunqing must have terribly low luck. After dozens of chops, the magic lock remained intact. The dagger’s 50% armor penetration seemed fake, never triggering even once despite Yan Yunqing’s aching hand.
Yan Yunqing himself was about to break down.
“Don’t just stand there watching, help me out!” Yan Yunqing said to Lillian, who was spectating like it was a show. “Do you have any magic that you can use right now?”
Lillian spread her hands. “It’s not that I don’t want to help you, little cat.”
She tapped the glass bottle that imprisoned her. “This is also an alchemical product, a Magic Restriction Bottle. How can I use magic when I’m trapped inside?”
Only then did Yan Yunqing notice the dark patterns flowing on the glass bottle, similar to the magic lock.
That’s right, now that they’ve captured an elf, they couldn’t just casually trap her in a glass bottle. Elves are natural mages with an affinity for wood elements.
“But the cage holding you doesn’t have a magic restriction effect, just a magic lock. Little cat, why don’t you try attacking the cage with magic?” Lillian suggested.
Nonsense, because I don’t know any magic at all! Yan Yunqing closed his eyes.
“Stop calling me little cat.” Yan Yunqing felt uncomfortable with the nickname. “My name is Yan Yunqing, you can call me A-Yan or Yunqing.”
“A-Yan?” Lillian repeated. “A slightly strange name… it doesn’t sound like a Beastman royal name. Don’t you have a royal family name?”
Yan Yunqing paused. Oh right, this is a Western fantasy game. Of course his Chinese name would seem strange among a bunch of Western names.
“No.” Yan Yunqing thought for a moment and said, “I’m not from the Beastman royal family. I’m just a… well, an ordinary Beastman.”
There were two races listed on the panel, with a question mark after “Beastman.” He even wondered if he was really a Beastman.
He just didn’t know where the cat ears and tail came from. It was hard to accept that even his species had changed after transmigrating.
Yan Yunqing switched to chopping at the cage bars. Lillian’s words inspired him. If the lock couldn’t be chopped open, maybe the cage could be.
Finally, on the ninety-first chop, the cage emitted a faint white light. With a “crack,” one of the bars snapped.
Great, was this a guaranteed rare drop?
Yan Yunqing’s spirits lifted. He continued to hack away at his cage. The noise was much louder than when he was chatting with Lillian. The other cages also rustled.
Yan Yunqing heard many strange languages, but they automatically turned into words he could understand in his ears.
“Save me…”
“Waa, Mommy…”
“Who are you? Who’s there!”
Distracted by the sounds, Yan Yunqing was surprised to find that Lillian and he weren’t the only intelligent cargo in this warehouse. He even saw a mermaid trapped in a glass tank, using his eyes that could see in the dark after his species changed.
It was an incredibly beautiful creature, with lovely sea-blue hair, a skirt made of shells and light gauze, and a silver-white tail pitifully folded up because the tank was too small.
Her face could rival those of famous actresses in Yan Yunqing’s world. Emerald-like eyes warily looked in Yan Yunqing’s direction.
She opened her mouth as if to say something, but Yan Yunqing listened carefully and heard nothing.
“Her tank is filled with Mute Potion,” Lillian explained. “Mermaids are natural singers. Their voices are the most effective weapons. The humans who hunt mermaids are afraid that they’ll use their songs to bewitch the guards. After catching them, they use Mute Potion to take away their weapons.”
Yan Yunqing watched as the mermaid instinctively slapped the glass wall of the tank with her tail, splashing countless drops of water. But the glass remained intact.
Like the glass bottle imprisoning Lillian, this tank was also an alchemical product. The little mermaid trapped inside could do nothing.
Yan Yunqing felt a pang of sympathy.
As another piece of cargo trapped in a cage, Yan Yunqing couldn’t describe how he felt right now.
With a sigh, Yan Yunqing dismissed the superfluous thoughts and focused on chopping at the cage. He couldn’t even protect himself right now. Sympathizing with others was just a waste of time.
He’d better try to save himself first.
He didn’t know how many times he chopped, but finally, Yan Yunqing’s cage was split open, creating a gap just big enough for him to squeeze through. Several waves of guards patrolled by in the middle, but fortunately, Yan Yunqing now had cat ears. His hearing was much better than when he was human. When he heard footsteps in the distance, he stopped moving and quietly waited for the patrol to leave.
Yan Yunqing shook his numb hand. After stopping, he felt dizzy.
He quickly opened his character panel and saw that his stamina was only a pitiful 4.
It only dropped from 22 to 4 just from chopping a cage?! What a glass cannon he was! Could he really escape from this heavily guarded Auction House?
Yan Yunqing leaned against the undamaged cage and took a few deep breaths. After the stars in his eyes disappeared, he rummaged through his backpack and found a stamina pill left over from the early game. He tossed it into his mouth and chewed a few times.
It didn’t have any special flavor, and its texture was similar to gummy candy, just without the taste.
Like eating rubber…
After swallowing, Yan Yunqing suddenly felt alive again. His previously sore limbs regained their strength. It was magical.
Following the example, he also broke the chains on his hands and feet.
Climbing out of the cage, Yan Yunqing stretched his stiff body, which had been cramped for so long.
“You actually got out,” Lillian exclaimed in admiration. “You’re such a persevering little cat.”
“…I told you not to call me little cat,” Yan Yunqing refused the embarrassing nickname.
“Okay, A-Yan.” Lillian leaned against the glass wall, looking at Yan Yunqing expectantly. “Are you going to leave this place? Take me with you, I’m very useful. If you just let me out, my magic can lure away the guards for you.”
“Then here’s the problem.”
Yan Yunqing walked up to Lillian’s glass bottle and poked it. “How do I let you out?”
Lillian tried hard to think, then said in disappointment, “I don’t know either. I haven’t learned how to break this kind of magic array yet.”
Yan Yunqing thought for a moment. “Do you know any basic magic that can make a lot of noise?”
Lillian cupped her face and recalled for a moment. “I once researched a prank spell with my friends. It should meet your requirements, but A-Yan, you didn’t even use magic to chop the cage just now. You probably don’t know magic, right? Even if I teach you Ancient Elven, you wouldn’t be able to use it, right?”
That’s not necessarily true.
Yan Yunqing thought: I’m not a native. How could a player not be able to use magic?
It must be because the class change quest hasn’t been activated yet, so all the skills on his [Demon King] skill panel were grayed out, locked so he couldn’t use them.
According to typical game logic, the player would first be discovered to have magical talent, activating the class change quest. Then an old man would pop out and say, “I see that you have extraordinary talent, you’re a good seedling for learning magic,” and toss him a manual, and the player would automatically learn the most basic magic, completing the mage class change quest.
But he had already transmigrated into the game. Could he take a shortcut, skip the class change quest, and just find an old man to learn basic magic?
Yan Yunqing stared at the old man in the bottle – oh, not the old man, Lillian in the bottle – his eyes faintly glowing in the dark environment.
“I just haven’t learned magic before. What if I have magical talent? Why don’t you teach me to try?”
Lillian blinked, wanting to say, “Aren’t most of the Beastman race without magical talent?” But looking at Yan Yunqing’s bright eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to say such hurtful words.
Just now, the little cat didn’t even use the most basic Sharpness magic to chop the cage. She thought the little cat was a magical waste like most Beastmen. After all, Sharpness magic was the most basic magic, even those with only a tiny bit of magic talent could use it.
“Okay, then I’ll teach you a Light spell first.” Lillian thought for a moment and uttered a string of difficult and obscure words.
Magic is actually a behavior that uses “language” to guide elements to change and combine to achieve a goal.
The spells used by elves are of course all in Ancient Elven. Other races can also use them, but they don’t have the elves’ natural sensitivity to Ancient Elven, so it’s very difficult to learn.
Perhaps it was because Yan Yunqing had a player panel. The string of obscure words Lillian spoke automatically turned into a language he could understand in Yan Yunqing’s ears.
The gist was, “Spirits of light, please grant me courage and illuminate the path before me!”
So, so embarrassing!
Yan Yunqing’s toes curled on the floor. His body stiffened for a moment as he considered whether he absolutely had to learn this magic.
He absolutely had to learn it.
Yan Yunqing rubbed his face and, following the tone and speed Lillian had just used, repeated the Ancient Elven.
Lillian widened her eyes in surprise.
Ancient Elven, Ancient Dragon, and Ancient Ermann languages are the most difficult languages recognized in the magic world. Magic involving these three languages is difficult for creatures other than their own race to learn. Those who can learn them are geniuses among geniuses, with extremely high magical talent.
She didn’t expect that she only said it once, and the cat-person in front of her could repeat it. This talent didn’t match at all with his inability to use Sharpness magic.
Could this really be a cat-person from a very remote Beastman village with no access to magic?
However, after waiting for a while, nothing happened.
Lillian was even more surprised: she had never seen someone who could repeat it perfectly after only hearing it once, but without any magic power fluctuations.
Could it be that this cat-person had a particularly strong talent for languages?
But without magic talent, it’s impossible to even pronounce Ancient Elven. How could he possibly repeat it perfectly?
Yan Yunqing was also thinking. Could it really be impossible to take a shortcut and bug his way through the class change quest?
As he thought, he glanced at the words “Magic Power 0/100” on the panel and fell silent.
Oh, so he was out of mana.
He rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a small blue bottle, drinking it down. His magic power slowly increased. After waiting for two minutes, it was full.
Yan Yunqing tried again. When the last Ancient Elven word fell, the surrounding light elements immediately gathered toward Yan Yunqing. In an instant, the entire warehouse was illuminated.
As if the sun had fallen in.
Yan Yunqing: ???
Lillian also looked like she had never seen the world before.
The other creatures in the warehouse stared blankly in Yan Yunqing’s direction, not understanding what had happened.
Wow!
Yan Yunqing was almost blinded by the light. He took two steps back. Before he could utter a curse, his ears twitched. He heard the voices of the patrol team in the distance.
“What’s going on? Where did that magic power fluctuation come from?”
“It seems to be coming from Warehouse #6. Let’s go, check it out!”
Yan Yunqing felt like his butt was on fire. He nervously looked left and right.
He wanted to make some noise to attract the patrol team’s attention, but not all of their attention!
