    Chapter 30

The guards at the Magic Academy were, in a way, even more relaxed than those at the City Lord’s Mansion. They had set up a bunch of magic arrays for defense, but for Lillian, while breaking through those arrays was difficult, concealing her own aura and sneaking in was very convenient.

Isn’t that why elves are said to be top-tier support? Entrusting this kind of sneaky business to an elf is the most convenient!

Lillian, being treated as a sneaky, thieving laborer: ……

    “I think you’re a bit like someone.”

“Who?” Yan Yunqing asked distractedly, his gaze constantly sweeping across the various bookshelves.

They had successfully sneaked into the Magic Academy’s library, and there wasn’t much time left before dawn. They had to quickly find clues about Adelaide.

    “The Demon King,” Lillian said.

“Cough, cough—” Yan Yunqing choked on his own saliva, covering his mouth and coughing desperately. “You, cough cough… Why… Why did you suddenly say that?”

Barely suppressing the itchy feeling in his throat, Yan Yunqing turned his back and pretended to be looking at the labels on the bookshelves, actually just trying to hide the astonishment on his face.

“Hmm?” Lillian didn’t notice Yan Yunqing’s abnormality. “Well… It just feels like it, no particular reason… If I had to say, it’s the personality, right?”

“Looks like a good person, but unexpectedly ruthless.” When Lillian spoke of the Demon King, her voice carried a hint of inexplicable emotion, as if she was lost in some memories. “Did you know? Demon King is actually just a title. At first, it was what the believers of the gods killed by the Demon King called him.”

“Saying he was a ruthless devil and the like… Later, this title spread wider and wider, and became the Demon King’s title. History books also call the Demon King this way.”

“In reality, the Demon King’s followers never called the Demon King that.”

Yan Yunqing’s eyes flickered for a moment. Of course he knew what the Demon King’s followers called the Demon King.

“How do you know so much about this? Is this also part of your inherited memories?”

“Ah? Oh… Yes, this is also part of my inherited memories,” Lillian said. “But it’s just fragmented bits. Most of the Demon King’s deeds I found in the notes of the first Elf King/Queen.”

“The Demon King in the notes and the Demon King in historical records are not quite the same. I can’t say exactly where the difference lies, but seeing you today, I suddenly think you two are quite similar.”

Yan Yunqing felt a bit numb. He now strongly suspected, “Your inherited memories, wouldn’t they be from Sylph?”

“How is that possible?” Lillian shrugged. “Before returning to the Mother Tree, that one stored all their memories in a memory crystal, which is still kept in the Elven race’s holy land.”

“They didn’t bring their memories back to the Mother Tree, so it’s impossible for any elf to inherit their memories.”

“Is that so?” Yan Yunqing asked strangely, “Why would they do that?”

“How would I know?” Lillian shook her head. “There must be something important in the memories that they didn’t want to pass on to other elves.”

“Huh?” Lillian was about to say something more, but her gaze swept over a label on a folder and was immediately drawn to it. Flapping her wings, she flew over. “Is this what you’re looking for?”

Yan Yunqing immediately went over, took the cowhide-bound book in front of Lillian. The spine read: “Academy Magic Teacher Data Sheet.”

Good, he was thinking that according to this world’s setting, academy faculty might not have a unified registry. It seems it’s still a game setting, always giving players a channel to understand Adelaide.

Yan Yunqing opened the cowhide cover. Inside was a neatly stacked pile of parchment. This shape looked like a book, but it was actually a small box for holding documents.

Yan Yunqing quickly flipped through the thick parchments, trying to find the name Adelaide. Lillian flew to the bookshelves behind, looking for similar materials for Yan Yunqing.

The two cooperated, and to make it easier to flip through the paper documents, Yan Yunqing took off his gloves. As he flipped to the eighth one, Yan Yunqing finally saw what he wanted.

“Na Adelaide, a high-level mage certified by the Magic Association…”

“Six years ago, during a team training exercise, they encountered a magical beast attack. Ten people died, including the team leader.”

Yan Yunqing flipped through all the records related to the name Adelaide and found that the students she had taken in had also gradually died or disappeared after graduating during these six years. The last one lost contact two years ago.

“Are they trying to kill them all?” Lillian was also looking at the records, incredulous. “Aren’t they afraid the Magic Association will suspect something?”

Yan Yunqing quickly scanned the data again, confirming: “Looking at these data alone, the deaths of Adelaide and her students are not unusual, because mages in the academy often encounter magical beast attacks and die during outside training.”

“There are many death records in the past six years. Adelaide and her students are placed among them, so they are inconspicuous.”

Yan Yunqing judged, “Moreover, the node where a large number of students and teachers began to die is not six years ago, but earlier… So the two are difficult to link together. Is that why Dean and Fei Wu are so unscrupulous?”

“Speaking of which, since the third magical beast tide broke out, the frequency of magical beasts appearing has indeed become more frequent,” Lillian recalled. “So, you think they used this to make the deaths of Adelaide and her students a coincidence?”

“Probably,” Yan Yunqing wasn’t very sure.

Yan Yunqing just wasn’t sure why Dean and Fei Wu had to be so decisive, not only killing Adelaide, but also harming all of her remaining students.

Wanting to achieve this level wasn’t a simple matter. Otherwise, these students wouldn’t have been dying or disappearing gradually over six years. They could have just killed them all in one go to silence them.

It must be to take into account the handling of subsequent traces…

“What’s next? It seems like the clues have been cut off. All relevant insiders are gone.”

Yan Yunqing’s fingertips brushed past the names of individuals, finally stopping on one name. It was a registration form for the academy dormitory.

    “Brooke.”

Someone who had once applied to become Adelaide’s student, but was ultimately rejected for some reason. Later, they became roommates with another one of Adelaide’s students.

Now, this student Brooke is still in the academy, the dormitory is… Building E, Room 409.

“Do you think he’ll know something?”

On the way to the Magic Academy’s dormitory, Lillian asked, “To do something like killing Adelaide and her students, they wouldn’t let go of an insider, right? And I don’t see any connection between this Brooke and Adelaide.”

“Yeah, I didn’t see it at first either,” Yan Yunqing spread his hands. “But when I was flipping through the duty roster for the magic plant garden six years ago, I saw Brooke’s signature. He had volunteered at the magic plant garden for a while.”

“Is there any connection between these things?” Lillian was bewildered.

“Adelaide used to be the person in charge of the magic plant garden, and the courses she taught at the school before were also related to magic plants,” Yan Yunqing reminded her. “From Rosen’s description, it can be seen that this commoner-born Adelaide took good care of students who were also commoners, and Brooke is also a commoner, only compared to the talented Karenna, his talent seems a bit mediocre.”

In this world, it’s easy to distinguish commoners from nobles. Nobles all have a surname, as a symbol of family pride, while commoners rarely have specific surnames. The few commoners who do have surnames basically have some connection to nobles in their ancestry.

Perhaps they were slaves who worked closely with nobles, or perhaps they were distant relatives of nobles from many generations ago.

Brooke doesn’t have a surname, so he’s obviously a commoner.

Lillian suddenly understood: “Ah, you mean that although Brooke wasn’t taken in by Adelaide as an official student, he might have been taught by her for a while before that? Under the guise of volunteering?”

“In the semester after volunteering, Brooke received excellent grades in magic plant courses and potion-related courses—before that, Brooke’s grades could only be described as average,”

Yan Yunqing had flipped out Brooke’s transcripts and was carrying them in his backpack. “Look.”

Two transcripts, one from before he became a volunteer, with a grade of C, barely passing; and one from after he became a volunteer, with a grade of A, a very excellent grade.

And Brooke’s other grades also improved slightly, just not as noticeably as the magic plant and potion courses.

    “I see!”

Lillian’s eyes lit up. “So this Brooke was likely guided by Adelaide for a while, but this matter was very hidden, using the guise of volunteering, so that Dean and Fei Wu missed this Brooke who was related to Adelaide when they were killing people to silence them later!”

Yan Yunqing snapped his fingers. “That’s right.”

Lillian pondered: “Well… That does make sense, but these are all your guesses, right? Are you so sure there are no mistakes?”

“So, aren’t we on the way to confirm whether my guess is correct?”

Yan Yunqing curled the corners of his mouth, rubbed Lillian’s cheeks with his thumb and forefinger, pinching her mouth into a pout, like a little duck. “Trust me a little more. I’m very good at this kind of reasoning and puzzle-solving game.”

“I used to be known as Edogawa Yunqing!”

“Ooo ooo?!” Lillian struggled to break free from Yan Yunqing’s grip and bit his finger hard. “You’re so rude, treating a lady like this!”

Yan Yunqing’s smile collapsed, and he gasped. “Are you a Crispy Shark? Your teeth are so sharp!”

Lillian grinned, showing her big white teeth, and hummed twice. “That’s for pinching my face!”

“But, Edogawa Yunqing? What kind of strange title is that?”

Yan Yunqing curled his lips: Because people named Edogawa are all great at reasoning! Look at Edogawa Conan, Edogawa Ranpo!

Unfortunately, this other world doesn’t have these anime works at all, and can’t understand his point.

Alas, how lonely it is to be invincible~

“You just need to know that everyone called Edogawa is a god of reasoning,” Yan Yunqing waved his hand. “You wouldn’t understand the others even if I explained them to you.”

Lillian watched the smug Yan Yunqing with her chin in her hand, thoughtful.

Hmm… In terms of talking to himself, he’s also particularly like the Demon King?
