    Chapter 248

    Chapter 248

Northeastern United States, a suburb of a city in Pennsylvania.

The night is deep, the sky is like a splash of ink, pitch black, and strands of moonlight struggle to penetrate the clouds, casting mottled light and shadows between the tombstones, twisting and swaying with the movement of the wind, like the ghosts buried here holding a dance party for the dead.

The cemetery is very quiet, only the rustling of the wind through the leaves can be heard.

The gravedigger wrapped himself in his old brown overcoat. This coat had been with him for many years, and there were several mended spots on the hem from previous damage. The fine stitches showed how much he cherished it.

The gravedigger held an old-fashioned flashlight in his hand. It was a very old model that could be powered by hand-cranking. Because of its reliable quality, like the gravedigger’s coat, it had never been replaced and was his old buddy.

He carried the flashlight, humming a tuneless ditty, and pushed open the warm wooden hut, preparing for the last patrol of the night.

The pay for being a gravedigger here is actually quite average, but the advantage is that it’s a leisurely job. There isn’t much work to do each day. During the day, he cleans up the cemetery’s garbage, trims the lawn, and sweeps away fallen leaves to ensure the cemetery is tidy. Before resting at night, he patrols the cemetery to make sure no one else is lingering there.

The gravedigger had been doing this job for most of his life and was used to the life here. Even though the pay was average, he never thought about changing jobs.

The wooden door was pushed open, and a gust of cold wind with a few snowflakes drilled into the house, making the gravedigger shiver. He then realized that it had started snowing again outside at some point.

The gravedigger readily picked up the wooden broom placed by the door, pulled out the wooden stick from it, and braved the wind and snow to walk outside.

Because it was the snow season, not many people had come to pay respects to the deceased these days, and no one had come today. So, his night patrol today was very simple. He only needed to take a quick circle and come back, without having to walk back and forth through the entire cemetery in the cold winter wind and snow.

The big black dog tied up in the yard saw the gravedigger’s figure and immediately stood up, whimpering at him, making restless noises. Accompanied by rumbling sounds in its throat, the big dog walked back and forth, constantly nudging the rope tying it with its head.

“Oh, old buddy, I almost forgot you were outside.” Seeing this, the gravedigger quickly took two steps forward, ruffled the dog’s head a couple of times, and muttered, “It’s snowing, and who knows how long it will snow tonight. You’ll sleep with me tonight to avoid freezing out here.”

However, the big black dog was unusually abnormal tonight. It seemed particularly anxious, and when the gravedigger approached, it kept nudging the gravedigger’s hand with its nose, alternating its front paws on the ground, and occasionally trying to paw at the gravedigger’s trouser legs.

The gravedigger frowned. This was the first time he had seen the big black dog so abnormal. He tried to pat the dog’s head again, wanting to soothe the restless dog, but he couldn’t calm it down.

“Woof—woof!” The big black dog made a warning rumble.

“Okay, okay—” The gravedigger held the big black dog’s head tightly, patted it soothingly, and lowered his voice, “Old buddy, are you trying to remind me of something?”

However, the big black dog couldn’t speak, it was just still anxious.

The gravedigger had an idea in his mind. He held the flashlight in one hand, and pinched the wooden stick in the other. He thought about it again and untied the dog rope tied to the big black dog, put it on his wrist, and held the rope with the hand holding the stick.

He tentatively shined the flashlight in the cemetery outside. The flashlight’s slightly dim light shone on the rows of tombstones in the cemetery, creating a hazy atmosphere. Coupled with the dark night sky, it really had a strange atmosphere lingering in it.

In a short period of time, snowflakes had already laid a thin layer of snow on the cemetery. The snowy ground, which should have reflected the light source to increase the brightness of the cemetery, was also unusually dark.

The gravedigger cautiously shined the flashlight over the entire cemetery, and did not find anything wrong, nor did he see any other figures.

But the big black dog’s performance didn’t seem fake. It wouldn’t be restless for no reason.

The gravedigger poked the snow in front of him with a stick, and walked around the cemetery slowly step by step. During this time, the big black dog refused to go with him no matter what. He had to drag the big black dog with force to finish the circle.

The cemetery was quiet, there was nothing, and there was no one.

The accumulated snow under his feet made a crunching sound, and the whistling cold wind was in his ears. The gravedigger slowly walked past rows of tombstones. He didn’t know if it was his illusion, but today the cemetery was filled with a not-so-pleasant smell.

It smelled like rotten branches and wet air mixed together.

The flashlight’s dim yellow light moved over the cold tombstones, sweeping across one black-and-white face after another. Those black-and-white faces all had decent smiles. When the light of the flashlight fell on their photos, the corners of their mouths seemed to curl up because of the shadows, as if they were greeting the gravedigger.

If an ordinary person were in this scene, they would probably have been scared into a stupor. However, the reason why the gravedigger became a gravedigger was naturally because he did not believe in ghosts and gods, and he did not feel any fear of these dead people.

He carefully looked at the surrounding tombstones, and the flashlight swayed back and forth with his steps, confirming that there were no figures hidden in the gaps of the tombstones.

    “Strange…” The gravedigger muttered.

But the big black dog refused to continue walking when it reached halfway, and sat on the ground, no matter how the gravedigger pulled the dog rope.

“Big Black!” The gravedigger called out in a low voice. Before he could scold it, an unharmonious sound came from the corner not far away.

    Rustling.

It was like something was digging the earth, or like someone was stepping on the snow.

The gravedigger frowned, clutching the wooden stick in his hand.

He didn’t think he had encountered anything strange, but thought he had most likely encountered grave robbers.

It’s just, why would these grave robbers come here to dig graves?

This cemetery is located in a remote suburb, and it is not built very luxuriously. In addition, the facilities are old, so the burial fees charged are not high. Those who bury their families here are not rich people, so they will not bury any valuable burial objects, which also brings convenience to the gravedigger’s management.

After all, no thief would be so stupid as to come and dig up the graves of poor families.

He hung the big black dog’s dog rope on the tree next to him, clenched the stick, and quickly walked past the corner with the flashlight, pointing the flashlight at the place where the sound came from, “Hey, this is——uh?”

The gravedigger just wanted to scare away the grave robbers with his voice, but he didn’t expect that when he crossed the corner, he didn’t see the grave robbers who made the sound. The corner was empty, there was no one.

Could it be that they ran away?

The gravedigger subconsciously thought, but then, he heard several rustling sounds again. He was instantly alert, judged that the ‘person’ was on his right by the sound, and the flashlight in his hand immediately turned, shining to his right, “Don’t move, I found you——?!”

The last word of the gravedigger’s shout broke, he raised his head blankly, only to see a nearly three-meter-tall ‘monster’ standing not far to his right.

It had a wolf’s head and a lizard’s body, exuding a strange dark green mist, exuding a chilling pressure, dense and sharp fangs exposed, and saliva dripping down its long tongue.

The light of the flashlight fell on the monster’s face, reflecting a strange and cold light from its scarlet eyes. The moment the gravedigger found it, it instantly locked onto the gravedigger’s figure.

“Ho…hoho…” The moment the gravedigger was locked on by those scarlet eyes, he only felt his scalp tingle, his legs weaken, and his throat was choked by an invisible hand. He wanted to shout but couldn’t make a sound. He could only squeeze out fragmented gasping sounds, and he could only helplessly clench the wooden stick and wave it with trembling hands.

In that instant, the gravedigger’s mind was filled with all sorts of thoughts. The film and television works he had seen in the past few decades flashed through his mind one by one, like some Umbrella Corporation, Jurassic Park, etc…

In the end, it turned into a blank space. He couldn’t remember anything. Under the shroud of such a behemoth, the gravedigger couldn’t even come up with the idea of self-rescue. It seemed that there was only one way to go: to wait for death.

At some point, white mist gradually spread out, shrouding the cemetery.

The gravedigger’s fear did not make the monster retreat. It stared at the gravedigger’s voice, raised its head and roared, and rushed towards the gravedigger.

The gravedigger staggered back a few steps, terrified. The wooden stick in his hand waved faster. At the moment when the monster was about to pounce on him, he screamed, his eyes rolled back, and he fainted.

But the monster seemed to be projected by high technology. At the moment when it was about to pounce on the gravedigger, it turned into a phantom and passed through the gravedigger, and finally disappeared.

At the same time, the same terrifying scenes appeared in various countries around the world.

In the United Kingdom, in front of Edinburgh in Scotland, a five-meter-long reptile monster appeared in the crowd. The originally lively crowd became even more lively. Facing such a terrifying monster, they screamed and pushed each other in a panic, like a grand ‘dance party’.

In France, on the Eiffel Tower, a three-headed eagle that was completely black and exuded an ominous stench appeared in the sky. The sharp beak opened and called out, making a hoarse and unpleasant sound. The drooling saliva fell with the call. The tourist who was taking pictures subconsciously focused the lens on this strange bird. The next second, the three-headed eagle swooped down at the lens, took the initiative to give a close-up—and by the way, pointed the sharp beak at the tourist’s eyes.

    Germany…

For a time, terrifying legends appeared all over the world.

Social media, short video apps, personal blogs… and other platforms, constantly emerged with various monster pictures and videos, which instantly occupied countless world trends, causing people who were preparing to enjoy a glass of milk at home and brush social media before going to bed to look sideways.

[What is this? Is it a promotion for a new Hollywood blockbuster? Why is the shooting screen so blurry?]

[Wow, the special effects are really good. Is it made by XXXX company? I have always liked their special effects movies. If this is also made by this company, I will consider contributing a movie ticket for them when the movie is released.]

[Huh, why did I see my friend in the video? Oh my God, when did he participate in such a big production, but he never told me!]

[Does no one really think this video is real? The crowd’s fear doesn’t seem fake.]

——[Reply: Hey, friend, of course, the more realistic the special effects movie, the better. Have you ever seen a special effects movie that was shot very fake?]

——[Reply: There is no Umbrella Corporation in reality. If this kind of monster really appears, then our country will probably be finished——I am sure that the army ruled by those capitalists will not care about the life and death of us ordinary people.]

[This movie seems to be a big production. I saw landmarks in many countries. When was it filmed? Why haven’t I received any news? Was it secretly launched?]

[By the way, the fog is really heavy tonight. I hope tomorrow will be a good day.]
