Chapter 40: Mu Chuang Gets Married
Mu Chuang was surprised to hear this. “Why would anyone beat him, and so badly? Is he stupid?”
Despite his annoyance, he still felt indignant for Lin Xi’s father.
“I heard he lost at cards and refused to pay, so they beat him,” Lin Xi said, wishing he could disappear into the ground. He felt ashamed and even resentful of his father’s behavior.
Mu Chuang rolled his eyes and sighed helplessly. “Alright, we’ll go back tomorrow then. Pack your things, and we’ll ask for leave tomorrow morning.”
Lin Xi stood still. He thought Mu Chuang would take him back immediately, but who knew he’d have to wait until tomorrow? He’d be worried to death tonight.
“Can we go back now? Chuang-ge, please!” He looked pitiful, anxious and uneasy.
“No,” Mu Chuang refused. “We haven’t asked for leave yet, how can we go back? Do you think this is your company, that you can come and go as you please?”
Of course, it wasn’t impossible to leave, unless he didn’t want his position or the rest of his salary. But was it worth it for Mu Chuang to do that for Lin Xi?
Clearly, it wasn’t worth it to Mu Chuang. He didn’t want to go that far for Lin Xi. Agreeing to go back tomorrow was already being considerate enough. Any further demands would be unreasonable.
Lin Xi had already guessed his reaction when he asked. As expected, he was disappointed.
“Tomorrow it is then, thank you,” Lin Xi said, biting his lip and lowering his head. Even though Mu Chuang didn’t agree to go back immediately, he still had to be grateful. When you need someone’s help, you have to swallow your pride.
He silently returned to his bunk and started packing…
Mu Chuang stood at the doorway for a while, giving up on what he originally planned to ask him, then turned around to find Fu Xiaoling. He decided to get married this time while going back, which would be considered a major event.
Lin Xi didn’t sleep all night. He felt lightheaded when he asked for leave the next day. It was hard for him to wait until Mu Chuang finished explaining everything, and then he followed him into the car.
To his surprise, Fu Xiaoling was inside, neatly dressed, sitting in the passenger seat.
She didn’t even greet Lin Xi, probably because Mu Chuang tacitly allowed it, and her attitude changed with his towards him.
Mu Chuang got into the car and first reminded Fu Xiaoling to fasten her seatbelt. After making sure she was seated, he started the car, completely ignoring Lin Xi.
Along the way, Fu Xiaoling told Mu Chuang interesting stories from time to time. Mu Chuang would take the time to respond and occasionally smile along, looking very relaxed.
Only Lin Xi was anxiously dying in the back, but he couldn’t urge them to drive faster. When he couldn’t bear it, he would only pinch his fingers, almost drawing blood.
Because he hadn’t slept last night, he fell asleep for a while despite his anxiety. When he woke up, he heard Fu Xiaoling discussing marriage matters with Mu Chuang.
Lin Xi woke up instantly, feeling as if struck by lightning.
He originally thought Mu Chuang was taking him back on purpose, but he only brought him along incidentally. Marrying Fu Xiaoling was his real purpose for going back.
He pulled up the hood of his jacket to cover his eyes and slumped back into the seat, his head spinning.
The two in the front seemed oblivious and continued to chat about their most concerning issues. When they stopped for food, they realized Lin Xi hadn’t come down, and Mu Chuang reluctantly called out to him.
However, Lin Xi didn’t respond. Mu Chuang shook him, and he softly replied, “I’m not hungry, you guys eat.”
If it were in the past, Mu Chuang would definitely force him up to eat, but now, perhaps because Fu Xiaoling was with him, he didn’t force him. Instead, he said coldly, “Fine, don’t blame me for not calling you.”
Then he went to a nearby restaurant with Fu Xiaoling, ordered a few dishes, and started eating slowly.
During this break, Lin Xi got out of the car to use the restroom, then bought two buns and ate them as he walked back to the car.
When Mu Chuang and Fu Xiaoling finished eating and returned, they found him still asleep and didn’t bother him, continuing their journey.
Along the way, the two in the front had endless things to say, while Lin Xi pretended to sleep in the back.
After another twenty-odd hours of travel, the luxury car arrived at the county hospital, where Lin Xi got off.
He took out a hundred red money from his pocket and left it on the seat he had been sitting on, making his intention clear. Then he took his luggage from the trunk, greeted Mu Chuang, and went straight to his father’s ward.
His father had been taken care of by two aunts in shifts for the past two days. When Lin Xi arrived, they quickly explained everything and gave up their positions because they had things to do at home and couldn’t stay there all the time.
His father’s leg was fractured, and he had multiple external injuries. After two days of treatment, his condition was stable, but he needed someone to take care of him and slowly recover.
With the help of his two aunts, relevant people were involved, and he received a compensation, which solved a major problem, so Lin Xi didn’t have to pay for the medical expenses himself.
His task now was to run up and down every day to bring his father food and water, help him go to the toilet and sleep, and watch over his IV drip.
Mu Chuang started preparing for the wedding as soon as he returned. Fu Xiaoling was from the same county, but not the same town. After everything was settled, Mu Chuang picked her up and went to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
First, get the betrothal money, then go through the marriage procedures. This was the basic procedure, then invite friends and relatives to hold a banquet, and the matter was over.
In the local area, the betrothal money was not allowed to exceed 100,000 yuan. Mu Chuang gave 80,000 yuan, plus three gold items and various gifts, totaling more than 100,000 yuan, which was considered generous. Then they waited to hold the banquet.
During this time, Fu Xiaoling came to Mu Chuang’s house once and quickly established good relations with the neighbors. She also secretly said some things about Lin Xi, which made the villagers gasp.
A person who usually seemed calm and steady doing such things in secret, no one knew what the purpose was. The only explanation was that she was afraid that Lin Xi would affect her relationship with Mu Chuang in the future, so she publicized his scandal first, which would be beneficial to her in the future.
The reason she had this confidence was because she and Mu Chuang had already obtained their marriage certificates, the only thing that was left was sleep together.
Ten days passed in a flash. Lin Xi completed the discharge procedures for his father and took him back to the village.
And this day happened to be the day of Mu Chuang’s wedding.
Early in the morning, the Mu family was in an uproar.
Lin Xi settled his father in the house to rest, then got him something to eat and went out.
When passing by the vegetable garden at the entrance of the village, he ran into two villagers working in the fields. He originally greeted them politely, but unexpectedly, he was met with a series of questions.
