    Chapter 42 Leaving

Gao Xuefeng had never entered Gao Huan’s office. If he had something to do, he would ask his secretary to call someone upstairs to discuss it.His elevator doesn’t even stop on this floor. But that night, he let his assistant go and took the ordinary elevator to the eleventh floor.

The offices on this floor all have glass doors, and the lights in the corridor automatically dim after nine o’clock. He walked to Gao Huan’s office door and found that the lights were still on inside.

Gao Huan was still working, his fingers typing quickly on the keyboard, and the light on the screen made his face look cold and white.

Gao Xuefeng knocked on the door and pushed it open.Gao Huan heard the sound, looked up, and called: “Dad.”

“Still not leaving?” Gao Xuefeng took two steps forward and then stopped. His eyes slowly swept around the office and landed on Gao Huan.

Gao Huan leaned back on the chair and stretched his arms forward, as if he hadn’t changed his position for a long time.

“Well, I want to sort out the laboratory materials.”

“Okay.” Gao Xuefeng nodded and said calmly, “In the past six months, you have shown your sincerity. I can see it.”

Gao Huan’s arm froze in mid-air for a moment, then slowly returned to the table.

Gao Xuefeng moved slightly, as if he wanted to get closer, but then stopped. He changed his question and asked, “Did Wang Yuan tell you about going to London?”

“I said it.” Gao Huan’s face turned gloomy and his jaw tensed slightly.

“Well, you’re really on your own when you get there this time. At the age of twenty-five, you have to learn to walk your own path.” Gao Xuefeng rarely showed the serious side of his old father’s words.

    ——My own way.

Gao Huan felt as if something had stabbed him in his heart. He subconsciously grabbed his arms with both hands, lowered his head and said nothing.

Gao Xuefeng couldn’t see the expression on his face, and continued: “You discuss the itinerary with Wang Yuan.”

He paused for a moment, but didn’t get any answer from Gao Huan, so he took a breath, exhaled heavily, and said: “Don’t read this page after you turn it.”

After saying that, he turned around and left the office, closing the door gently from the outside.

The cursor flashes at the end of the document.Gao Huan stared at it, placing his hands on the keyboard mechanically, but forgot what he wanted to write. He stayed in this posture, and time passed by, until the laptop screen automatically went to sleep, and a face appeared on the black screen, with sunken eye sockets. The originally beautiful eyes were now large and dull, and the lips were chapped, like yellow leaves blown by the autumn wind.He stared at the face for a few seconds, closed the screen, leaned back in his chair, and closed his eyes.

People who worked overtime left one after another, and the footsteps outside the door faded away one after another. The lights in the corridor were completely dimmed, and the only sound left in the office was the occasional sound of cars passing by downstairs.

He didn’t sleep, and he didn’t move. His body seemed to be dragged down by deep fatigue, and it seemed like he was immobilized by the thoughts in his head – if he moved, his whole body would collapse instantly.

A long time passed, and there were more and more cars downstairs. The cleaning staff turned on the lights and vacuumed, and the elevator started to pick up people again.Only then did he realize that it was already dawn.

He slowly opened his eyes, turned off the desk lamp, stood up on the armrest of the seat, and shivered.I touched my hand and it was frighteningly cold.He glanced at his phone, six forty-five.He walked to the tea room and poured a cup of coffee.

The entrance was too hasty and burned my tongue.Gao Huan frowned, then chuckled——

    It hurts.

The next few days felt like cut-out episodes: files were handed over, meetings were cancelled, and there was only one flight left on the schedule.

He had lunch with Wang Yuan and Gao Xuefeng respectively, during which they explained the things they should pay attention to after going to London and the directions that other shareholders should pay attention to.He listened quietly and asked questions and his own understanding.Gao Xuefeng felt relieved that the child had turned the page; and Wang Yuan saw the light in his eyes that was so dark that it almost disappeared. He wanted to say some words of comfort several times, but his words turned into business matters and instructions.

Just leave it to time.Wang Yuan thought.

Winter started early this year, and snow was already falling in the surrounding suburbs. Although it didn’t fall in the city, the sky was very cloudy.

The driver, Lao Zhang, delivered Gao Huan to the airport an hour and a half in advance, checked in his luggage, and passed the security check and customs. All procedures went smoothly as never before, without any pause.

Gao Huan found a sofa with dim lighting in the lounge, sat down, and took out his cell phone.

There is a new message in WeChat, sent by Li □□::

[Mr. Gao, it has been a pleasure cooperating with you during this time.I wish you a smooth journey and see you back home!】

His fingertips paused on the screen for a moment, and then typed the next line:

[Thank you for your hard work.See you back home.】

He slowly opened a dialog with another person, and the last message was sent by him one night:

    [Good night, Teacher Lin.】

    The person didn’t reply.

He clicked on the person’s profile picture, which was the Qinye fig that was too big for his dormitory. The sunlight shone on the leaves, making it quiet and gentle.

He lightly scratched the screen with his fingertips, as if caressing the leaf, then returned and clicked [Settings] – [Delete Contact] – [Delete] in the upper right corner.

The movements are almost done in one go.

A few minutes later, he started to board the plane. He turned off the screen, put his phone in his trouser pocket, stood up, pushed the small suitcase, and walked out of the lounge. He quickly merged into the flow of people coming and going at the airport.
