Chapter 10: Stealing the Prince’s Quilt
In front of the Song Mansion, Song Huaixi reluctantly bid farewell to everyone.
Lin Rugui held Song Huaixi’s hand tightly, her eyes full of reluctance.
Song Huaixi was born with a deficiency, although the Song Mansion wasn’t a high-ranking or noble family, they were more than capable of supporting Song Huaixi for his entire life.
But now, he was bestowed by the Emperor to Zhao Fangye as his primary spouse.
Even when Zhao Fangye was still a prince, he was known for his gloomy disposition. After his expedition to the Northwest, his methods became ruthless, massacring ten thousand surrendered enemy soldiers, earning him a reputation for being cold-blooded and brutal.
When the news reached the capital, Zhao Fangye earned the moniker “Jade-faced Rakshasa.”
Now that he’s back in the capital, his maternal grandfather, the Chancellor, wields immense power, and his word is law in the court. His maternal uncles are also incredibly wealthy.
With the support of these two powerful factions, Zhao Fangye’s path to seizing power is practically effortless. When that time comes, Song Huaixi, the male spouse who brought him humiliation, will certainly not have a good end.
Lin Rugui could only constantly urge Song Huaixi to win the prince’s favor and avoid displeasing him.
Even if it hinders Zhao Fangye’s path in the future, she hopes he can remember their past connection and allow Song Huaixi to return to the Song family unharmed.
Song Huaixi slowly climbed into the carriage and sat beside Zhao Fangye, looking listless.
Zhao Fangye leaned against the soft cushion, closing his eyes to rest. Song Huaixi’s silence made him somewhat unaccustomed.
Usually, at this time, he would be pestering him and talking to him.
Turning his head to look at him, Song Huaixi’s dark eyes lacked their usual sparkle, and the area around his eyes was red. He looked like he was about to cry but wasn’t.
“What’s wrong? Why the long face?” Zhao Fangye stared at him, his tone indifferent.
Returning to the Song family meant returning to everything he was familiar with, but before he could stay for long, he had to leave again.
He had been holding back his tears, but Zhao Fangye’s question made his nose sting.
His voice was filled with sobs, and he choked out, “I don’t want to leave Father and Mother… I want to go home…”
Zhao Fangye tilted his head and looked at him. Song Huaixi’s tears were welling up in his eyes, and his eyelashes were wet. He looked pitiful.
“Don’t you like the Ning Wang Mansion?” Zhao Fangye’s emotionless voice came.
Song Huaixi wiped his eyes, trying to prevent the tears from falling: “I like it.”
“Then why are you crying?”
“But I can’t bear to leave Father and Mother…”
Song Huaixi fiddled with his fingers, pouting. He cried silently, only large tears falling.
Zhao Fangye frowned at his appearance.
Like a pitiful puppy, he thought to himself.
Taking a handkerchief from the side, Zhao Fangye’s tone was unusually gentle: “You can go home whenever you want, there’s no need to be so sad.”
Perhaps because Song Huaixi was born with a deficiency and was bestowed to him as a spouse, Zhao Fangye always felt more patient with him.
“Really?” Song Huaixi’s tears stopped instantly, and he picked up the handkerchief to wipe his face haphazardly.
Looking at Zhao Fangye, Song Huaixi sobbed and said, “Prince… you’re so good…”
“My mother said… normally you’re not allowed to go home… but you’re letting me…”
Song Huaixi held the silk handkerchief, wiping his face as he spoke.
Zhao Fangye couldn’t bear to watch, pinching his face and carefully wiping away the tear stains with the silk handkerchief.
“That’s what makes someone good?” Zhao Fangye chuckled softly, a hint of gentleness in his stern face. “You’re the first person to think so.”
Song Huaixi didn’t understand, and looked at him with his large eyes, his clear and pure gaze sincere: “You really are very good.”
“Alright.”
Tossing the handkerchief aside casually, Zhao Fangye’s tone was somewhat unnatural.
He didn’t know why he was saying these things to a fool.
Back at the Ning Wang Mansion, Song Huaixi still ate dinner alone.
The large table had only him eating, and he felt very bored.
Chun Hua noticed that he hadn’t touched his chopsticks much, and stepped forward with a puzzled look: “Wangfei, is today’s meal not to your liking?”
Shaking his head, Song Huaixi rested his face on his hand, recalling how lively the meals were with his family in the Song Mansion. In the Ning Wang Mansion, everything was cold and quiet.
“Where is the Prince?”
So he misses the Prince, Chun Hua covered her mouth and smiled. It seems Wangfei is very attached to the Prince.
“The Prince is probably in the study,” Chun Hua said after thinking for a moment.
Song Huaixi remembered his mission and looked at Chun Hua: “Is the Prince coming back to sleep tonight?”
This question was difficult for Chun Hua to answer, as she didn’t know. She had heard that Zhao Fangye had moved to another courtyard.
He probably wouldn’t be coming back to sleep.
“Wangfei, the Prince has been sleeping in the other courtyard recently, so he probably won’t be coming back tonight.”
“Another courtyard?”
That wouldn’t do. If Zhao Fangye had another room, he definitely wouldn’t come back to sleep.
He had to think of a way, or he wouldn’t be able to complete his mission.
Song Huaixi stood up abruptly and said anxiously to Chun Hua, “Which courtyard is it? I want to go.”
Arriving at the other courtyard, Song Huaixi curiously examined the furnishings inside. It wasn’t as nice as his room, and the floor was cold.
“Why does the Prince want to sleep here?” Song Huaixi was very puzzled.
This courtyard didn’t seem as good as his own at all.
Chun Hua knew he wouldn’t understand, so she didn’t explain.
Song Huaixi walked around the room, heading straight towards the bed.
Under the puzzled gazes of Chun Hua and the servants, he picked up all the blankets and pillows on the bed.
If he took the blankets and pillows to his room, they could sleep together, Song Huaixi happily thought.
Heave-ho, heave-ho, he dragged the blanket into his arms.
The fine Shu brocade quilt was dragged onto the ground. Chun Hua quickly stepped forward to help him pick up the quilt and pillows from the ground.
“Wangfei, what are you doing? This is what the Prince uses to sleep, what do you want these for?”
Song Huaixi’s face was buried in the brocade quilt: “I want the Prince to sleep on my bed!”
“Ah?”
Hearing this, Chun Hua didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. There were plenty of quilts in the Ning Wang Mansion, and even if they were taken, there would be new ones.
But Song Huaixi didn’t care. Under everyone’s gazes, he carried the quilt towards his courtyard.
When Zhao Fangye finished his work in the study and returned to the courtyard, exhausted, he found only an empty bed frame on the bed, and his face instantly darkened.
Zhao Fangye’s tone was cold: “What’s going on? What are the servants doing?”
The servants below immediately knelt down and explained tremblingly: “Reporting to the Prince… Wangfei just came over and moved all the things on the bed away. You were in the study, and we didn’t dare to disturb you…”
Hearing this, Zhao Fangye felt speechless. What was the little fool doing running to his courtyard to take the quilt?
The only possibility he could think of was that the Ning Wang Mansion was treating him poorly.
His tone immediately became stern: “How are you serving Wangfei? He has to come to my courtyard to take the quilt?”
“No… Wangfei said that if he takes away your quilt, you will have to sleep in Wangfei’s courtyard.”
Hearing the answer, Zhao Fangye stood there for a moment, looking at the empty bed with a complex expression.
Shaking his head, he didn’t know what to say about the little fool’s way of thinking.
But he didn’t want to fuss about it, and said to the servants helplessly: “Bring new bedding, I’ll still sleep here tonight.”
