    Chapter 186

The city of Sheng’an at night was immersed in tranquility and peace. Lu Ziming’s busy figure moved back and forth in the kitchen, carefully tidying up, washing, and putting away the tableware one by one. After completing all of this, she gently washed her hands, then slowly walked towards the balcony, each step revealing a hint of contemplation. In this short period of time, her thoughts were tightly bound by the past that Yao Jinglin had told her, and those fragments about their time together kept replaying in her mind.

Lu Ziming unconsciously lowered her head, staring at the back of her hand, as if the warmth and delicacy of Yao Jinglin’s touch still lingered there. She then raised her hand to gently stroke the hair tie still tied behind her head, as if that simple hair accessory also carried the bits and pieces of memories from her time with Yao Jinglin. That tingling sensation seemed to linger, stirring ripples in her heart.

She glanced back, the new home was decorated simply and naturally, but…

She subconsciously scratched her forehead, frowning slightly.

Logically speaking, with her personality of not wanting to interact with people too much, the current tranquility and solitude should be something she enjoyed. But for some reason, an indescribable sense of emptiness welled up in her heart, as if something important was missing here. This made her begin to reflect – could it be that after staying in the hospital for so long, she was no longer used to living alone?

She gently shook her head, her thoughts tangled like a mess, so she decided not to delve into it further and turned back to the bedroom. She changed into her newly bought pajamas, the soft fabric making her feel a little comfortable. Then, she walked to the bathroom, preparing to wash up and rest.

After washing up, glittering water droplets slowly slid down her cheeks. She gently wiped her eyes and looked up at the mirror above the sink. In the mirror, she, after experiencing all sorts of things during this period, revealed a trace of fatigue in her expression.

She stared at herself in the mirror, her heart filled with mixed feelings. During this period of time, because of “amnesia,” she had learned about many things from other people. She had forgotten what happened at the time, and she had also forgotten her consistent feelings. It wasn’t until she spent a whole day with Yao Jinglin today that she felt as if her wandering soul had finally landed, and she had a sense of real existence. Listening to Yao Jinglin’s words or laughter, looking at her face or staring into her eyes, being touched or caressed by her hand, all gave her empty self a feeling of being alive. What kind of feeling was this? Lu Ziming couldn’t describe it, but she vaguely felt that she hadn’t had such feelings for a long time. In the years since her mother had passed away, plus the time since her mother started getting sick, for such a long time, Lu Ziming’s life and memories had been pushed forward by various “shoulds.” And there were too many of these gray memories, even squeezing out the beautiful moments that should have been remembered, leaving her only able to repeat those hopeless memories, gradually becoming numb, rigid, and indifferent.

Lu Ziming took a deep breath, dried herself with a towel, and turned to leave the bathroom. She walked to the window, gently pulled open the curtains, and looked out at the night sky. The stars twinkled with faint light, as if telling something. A strange emotion welled up in her heart. Was it loneliness, longing, or confusion about all the uncertainties? She couldn’t tell.

However, a thought quietly arose in the depths of her heart: if Yao Jinglin were here at this moment, perhaps she would not fall into such a state of confusion and helplessness. This thought came suddenly, but was forcibly suppressed by Lu Ziming, whose reason had regained control.

Was she crazy? That girl had only confessed to her today and spent a day with her. She must already be very tired. Besides, at this late hour, if she wanted her to come to her place, no one would think of a good reason. If she said such a thing, then she would definitely be labeled ascumbag woman.

Just then, in the empty room, her phone suddenly vibrated. She picked up her phone, lit up the screen, and saw that it was actually a message from Yao Jinglin.

“Are you asleep?” There was no emotion in the message, but Lu Ziming’s mind still conjured up the image of Yao Jinglin asking this question cautiously.

Within the range illuminated by the phone’s light, a thin blush actually appeared on Lu Ziming’s originally pale cheeks, and a soft smile unconsciously climbed onto the corners of her mouth. She gently shook her head, as if to shake away the doubts and worries in her heart. Then, her fingers nimbly danced on the phone screen, replying to Yao Jinglin’s message.

“No.” Lu Ziming tried to keep her words simple to conceal her racing heart, and tried to restrain herself from carrying too much emotion.

But the fingers gripping the edge of the phone had already betrayed her. As soon as the reply was sent, she only stared at the phone screen, waiting for Yao Jinglin’s reply.

At this time, time seemed to be pulled into the fourth dimension, and every second was stretched abnormally long. Her mood swayed between anxiety and anticipation. Finally, the phone vibrated again. She couldn’t wait to light up the screen and saw that Yao Jinglin had replied: “Then open the door.”

Open the door? Lu Ziming was stunned? Open what door? She even subconsciously looked at her bedroom door. However, as if Yao Jinglin had anticipated her thoughts, she then sent another message: “Your front door!”

Front door?? Oh, the front door!! Lu Ziming finally understood.

“Coming.” Lu Ziming casually threw the phone she had just cherished onto the sofa, and rushed to the entrance door with the momentum of winning the 100-meter hurdles, and twisted the doorknob.

As if pressing a slow-motion button, the door slowly opened in front of Lu Ziming, slowly revealing Yao Jinglin’s figure outside the door. She seemed like a quiet painting, her black and shiny long hair, as smooth as silk, casually scattered on her shoulders. She wore a milky white silk nightgown, light and soft, as if carrying the gentleness of the moonlight. But her feet wore a pair of cute white cartoon character slippers, adding a bit of playfulness and liveliness. She had a sweet smile on her lips, and she raised the bag full of snacks in her hand and said, “Let’s watch a movie together…”

Lu Ziming stood there dumbfounded. After a long while, she closed her surprised mouth and asked, “You… where did you come from?”

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. You live in a temporary dormitory for employees that our unit arranged uniformly. My room is next to yours.” Yao Jinglin explained as she stepped into the house and handed the bag in her hand to Lu Ziming.

“I bought fruit wine, potato chips, and some snacks. Because I saw that you only bought things for making regular meals during the day, I know you don’t have these essentials for watching movies here. Come on, I haven’t enjoyed the pleasure of watching movies for a long time. Let’s relax and have fun today.” Yao Jinglin took off her shoes and entered the house, jumped onto the sofa in the living room in two steps, as familiar as if the two were friends for many years.

“…Oh.” Lu Ziming closed the door, obediently took the bag in her hand and walked towards the sofa. It felt like something was wrong, but it also seemed like… nothing was wrong.

In short, if it’s what she likes, then it’s right, right?
