Chapter 99: Returning to the Prince’s Estate

The Ye family, from top to bottom, had also learned that the person who attempted to assassinate Gong Xunwu was Yuan Bianyin. This time, Marquis Ye didn’t dare to try and smooth things over to save his nephew. Of course, there was no longer any room for smoothing things over.

Last time, when Yuan Bianyin was detained in the Imperial Palace, it could still be explained as a personal feud with Ye Yueshen. But this time, he had plotted to assassinate Qi Wang Gong Xunwu, which involved the Imperial family and was beyond the scope of what Marquis Ye could interfere with.

The Imperial Palace sent a verbal decree for Gong Xunwu to return to the palace, but Gong Xunwu didn’t care about the outcome of the matter and refused the order. He only sent an official back with a message, saying that he would be staying at the Marquis’s residence to recover from his injuries.

Seeing his gentle expression, the official understood that Yue Gongzi had relented. Confirming that Gong Xunwu was not seriously injured, he returned to the palace to report.

They had breakfast facing each other at a small table in the room. For lunch, Marquis Ye sent someone to invite them to the small hall.

Ye Yueshen and Gong Xunwu were whiling away the time with a piece of brocade embroidery. The two of them were lying on the bed, face to face, not moving.

“Is it about Yuan Bianyin?” Ye Yueshen said casually.

He was embroidering a five-petaled flower, first sewing the golden edges like drawing, and then sewing the inside with pink thread in a messy, close-packed manner.

Gong Xunwu was embroidering mandarin ducks, with tight stitches in some places and sparse ones in others. You could generally tell they were mandarin ducks, but you couldn’t look too closely.

Ye Yueshen pointed to the hard, lumpy pile of thread on the duck’s wing, which had been sewn and sewn over, and said, “It’s all squeezed out of shape.”

“I’ll just trim it later.” Gong Xunwu tried to loosen the thread pile with the tip of the needle, “What are your thoughts?”

Ye Yueshen knew he was talking about Yuan Bianyin, and said softly, “I don’t have any thoughts.”

“That’s true.” Gong Xunwu focused on embroidering the mandarin ducks, “If your cousins had a good relationship, his assassination attempt wouldn’t be a big deal. After all, I’m still alive. As long as you speak up, I won’t pursue it. But I resent him for complaining about you in front of my imperial brother. I can’t tolerate that.”

Ye Yueshen sewed the last stitch. Although it looked very messy, he felt that he had a special talent for embroidery. He was already planning to cut a piece of brocade the size of a hanging scroll, and he wanted to embroider a hibiscus tree picture.

“Actually, I feel the same way as you.” Ye Yueshen stuck the needle in the thread ball, “If he had committed another mistake, I wouldn’t mind Father helping him smooth things over, but he assassinated you.”

Gong Xunwu paused. He raised his head and looked at Ye Yueshen, his heart starting to pound.

Ye Yueshen looked back at him and said, “I mind.”

“Give me a kiss.” Gong Xunwu leaned over and lightly pecked Ye Yueshen on the lips.

He moved too fast, and Ye Yueshen was already kissed before he could react and retreat. He frowned and glared at him, saying, “Didn’t I say to kiss my forehead?”

Gong Xunwu smiled like he was proud of his success: “I’ll definitely remember next time.”

Ye Yueshen carefully stuck all the needles back into the thread ball, then put on his shoes and got out of bed: “I’m going to have dinner with Mother and Father. I’ll bring some back for you later. You stay here and rest.”

Gong Xunwu had already gotten up with him: “I don’t need to rest. The paddle hit my back. I can sit.”

Ye Yueshen thought of his own spanking and was very unhappy because he was embarrassed by being bedridden, so he snorted unhappily, feeling that Gong Xunwu was laughing at him.

“What’s wrong?” Gong Xunwu followed behind him, reaching out to hook his fingers.

Ye Yueshen glared at him and went out. Gong Xunwu followed closely behind.

He remembered that Ye Yueshen had his own little temper, and he was a bit adorably straightforward. The time they met by chance while hunting in the mountains, Ye Yueshen had said something that surprised him.

He felt sorry for Ye Yueshen. In less than a year, Ye Yueshen had suffered a lot and been hurt a lot. He felt guilty for not protecting Ye Yueshen well.

During lunch, the Junzhu didn’t say much. She didn’t seem to care that her husband’s nephew had caused a disaster. She only focused on picking food for Ye Yueshen, and smiled when she saw him eat it.

Throughout the meal, Marquis Ye was very nervous. He spoke cautiously, repeatedly trying to bring up Yuan Bianyin’s matter, inquired about Gong Xunwu’s injuries, and expressed his apologies for the lack of vigilance of his own gatekeeper, but he didn’t dare to mention Yuan Bianyin.

Because of Ye Yueshen and the Junzhu’s faces, Gong Xunwu did not ignore Marquis Ye’s nervousness and took the initiative to bring it up: “I will not interfere in Yuan Bianyin’s matter. Everything will be according to the Imperial Palace’s wishes.”

Marquis Ye was stunned and touched his nose awkwardly.

Gong Xunwu said very bluntly: “Lord Marquis, Yueshen is more important than myself. The Junzhu watched me grow up. Fuyi and I have shared studies. Jingchen’s official position was also something I took the initiative to ask for on his behalf. Lord Marquis, you even have a half-teacher relationship with Jinyin, and you withstood the pressure and risked your own position to seek justice for him. Yuan Bianyin’s plot to assassinate me is not a big deal. I’m still alive and well, and my injuries are not fatal. Originally, I should have let him off on the Ye family’s account and allowed him to return to his hometown.”

Marquis Ye lowered his head. He understood that this was not a negotiable opening.

Sure enough, Gong Xunwu said: “But he once harmed Yueshen, and even wanted to put Yueshen to death. If it was out of fairness, that would be fine, but he was completely motivated by his malice towards Yueshen. Lord Ye, I understand that you feel sorry for your nephew, but I feel even more sorry for Yueshen. We all have loved ones to care for, and I hope Lord Ye can understand.”

Marquis Ye’s face was flushed and sweaty. The Junzhu even glared at Marquis Ye. Her husband was good in every way, but he cared too much about his younger sister and brother-in-law’s family, even at the expense of wronging his own son.

“Your Highness misunderstood.” Marquis Ye forced a smile and echoed: “Yuan Bianyin has repeatedly refused to be reformed, and I am very disappointed in him. I will not care about him.”

Ye Yueshen was silent throughout the meal. He walked back with Gong Xunwu, and when he saw that there was no one around, he whispered, “Yuan Bianyin’s accusations against me were not wrong, but…”

“Don’t overthink it.” Gong Xunwu comforted him: “This time it’s my matter, and the last matter is already over. You don’t need to feel too much pressure, and don’t feel grateful and submissive to him because of Fuyi’s words. In fact, he also had to weigh the pros and cons. Letting you continue to be the third son of the Ye family can at least keep the Junzhu and Marquis Ye at peace. They are old, and knowing the inside story of a white-haired person sending off a black-haired person would not benefit them.”

Ye Yueshen didn’t speak. They ate dinner in the room, and Gong Xunwu continued to embroider his mandarin ducks, while Ye Yueshen was a little absent-minded all afternoon.

After dinner, Gong Xunwu couldn’t help but suggest: “Why don’t we go back to the Prince’s Estate?”

He asked without much confidence, just casually mentioning it. If he was rejected, he would just pretend he hadn’t said it. There was nothing to lose.

Unexpectedly, Ye Yueshen thought for a while and actually agreed: “Alright.”
