Chapter Index

    Look what I do

Song Li’s fingers were clenched by Ling Qingye, and the slightly cool skin stuck together. After walking for half a street, his fingertips gradually became warm.He didn’t break away or take the initiative to push back, he just let his arms hang down and let others hold him. He glanced at the two people’s intertwined hands, and the tips of his ears quietly turned red.

Passing by the intersection of the night market, the aroma of roasted chestnuts floats in the air.Ling Qingye stopped, let go and walked towards the stall. Song Li was stunned for a moment, standing there waiting, his fingers still clenched and empty.

“If you want something hot, open your mouth.” Ling Qingye said to the stall owner. He looked back at Song Li and saw him standing under the street lamp, his hair slightly messy in the wind, and his eyebrows softened a lot in the warm yellow light.

The paper bag was handed over, so hot that Song Li’s fingertips shrank. Ling Qingye stretched out his hand to take it, weighed it, and handed it to him: “Eat it when it’s cool.” Song Li didn’t say anything, but took it and held it in his arms. The burnt aroma penetrated his nose, it was the smell he often ate in winter when he was a child.

On the way to the apartment, Ling Qingye peeled a chestnut and handed it to Song Li’s mouth.Song Li turned his head to hide, but Ling Qingye’s hand stopped in front of his lips without moving away.He hesitated for a moment, then opened his mouth to bite, and the sweetness spread in his mouth. He caught a glimpse of the smile at the corner of Ling Qingye’s mouth from the corner of his eye, and couldn’t help but glare at him, but he didn’t refuse the next one.

When they got downstairs from the apartment, Song Li stuffed the chestnut bag into Ling Qingye’s hands and said, “Go up and sit for a while.” He felt awkward when he said the words, so he added, “I’ll give you the rest.”

Ling Qingye laughed out loud and followed him upstairs. The light in the entrance hall was warm. When Song Li was changing his shoes, Ling Qingye leaned against the shoe cabinet and looked at him. His eyes fell on the broken hair on the back of his neck, and he stretched out his hand to gently brush it.Song Li’s shoulders trembled, and he was half a beat slow in changing his shoes.

The big lights were not turned on in the living room, only the floor lamp on the balcony was turned on. The light diffused and fell on the sofa.Song Li threw a pillow to Ling Qingye and curled up on the other side. He picked up the remote control on the table and pressed it randomly. The TV screen jumped around, but no one could see it.

Ling Qingye peeled the chestnuts, put them in the palm of his hand, collected a few and handed them to Song Li.Song Li reached out to pick it up, and his fingertips accidentally touched it. Neither of them spoke, only the sound of the TV and the soft sound of peeling chestnuts.

When he was about to finish a bag of chestnuts, Song Li’s eyelids started to fight. He didn’t sleep well last night and spent a long time in the game room in the afternoon. He felt sleepy and his head slowly tilted towards the back of the sofa.

Drowsily, there was a warm coat covering my body, carrying the familiar smell of cedar. He wanted to open his eyes, but his eyelids were heavy. He felt the sofa beside him sink a little, and a hand gently supported his head, making him lean back more comfortably.

When I woke up again, it was already dark, the lights in the living room were turned off, and only a small light was left on the balcony.I still had my coat on, the seat next to me was empty, and there was a soft sound from the kitchen.

Song Li sat up, rubbed his eyes, and walked to the kitchen door.Ling Qingye was wearing his apron and cooking noodles. The water in the pot was steaming. He was stirring with his head down, his side face soft in the light.

“Are you awake?” Ling Qingye looked back at him, “Cook some clear soup noodles to cushion your stomach.”

Song Li leaned against the door frame, watching his movements and saying nothing. The apron he bought casually, printed with cartoon patterns, was worn on Ling Qingye. It was in great contrast with his usual appearance, but it was not inconsistent at all.

The noodles were brought to the table with chopped green onions and poached eggs. The clear soup was a little watery but very warm.Song Li ate half of the bowl and looked up to see Ling Qingye looking at him. The noodles in the bowl had not been touched for a few bites.

“Look what I do, I’ll eat yours.” Song Li said.

Ling Qingye lowered his head to eat the noodles, with a smile on his lips: “I see you are enjoying the meal.”

After eating the noodles, Song Li wanted to wash the dishes, but Ling Qingye didn’t let him go and pushed him out of the kitchen: “Sit down, I’ll do it.” Song Li leaned on the sofa, listening to the sound of water in the kitchen, and felt soft in his heart, as if he was soaked in warm water.

When Ling Qingye came out after washing the dishes, Song Li was still curled up on the sofa, holding a pillow in his hand.He walked over, sat down next to him, and gently put his arm around his shoulders.Song Li didn’t hide, and leaned into his arms, resting her forehead on his chest, and could hear the steady heartbeat.

“Ling Qingye.” Song Li’s voice was muffled.

    “Yeah.”

“Let this be the case from now on.”

Ling Qingye tightened his arms, rested his chin on the top of his hair, and said in a soft but firm voice, “Okay.”

The light from the floor lamp diffused over and enveloped the two people embracing each other. The evening breeze outside the window blew gently, carrying the gentleness of the autumn night. The living room was quiet, with only the sound of each other’s breathing, lingering and lingering in the time.
