Chapter 45: Their Methods
When Duan Yunhong returned, he saw a table full of delicacies, but no one was sitting at it. Ning Fei was sprawled out on the wooden couch nearby.
He was lying in a very relaxed posture, with an unknown book in his hand. Even when Duan Yunhong came in, he only glanced up briefly, with no intention of getting up.
Duan Yunhong didn’t understand why he was lying by the dining table. He asked, puzzled, “Why are you in this position?”
“What other position should I be in?” Ning Fei put the book down and propped his head up to look at him. “Should I rush over and kneel to welcome General Duan back for dinner?”
“Who angered you again?” Duan Yunhong walked to the couch, squatted down, and looked at him. “It can’t be that you’re starving, right? You don’t seem like the type to endure hunger and wait for me.”
“Why not?” Ning Fei scoffed. “General Duan sends a message that he’s coming back for dinner, and everyone’s watching my reaction, as if I should be grateful. Duan Yunhong, do you have to indulge in this boss act so much?”
Duan Yunhong felt his perspective was strange. “What kind of boss is this?”
“A boss who’s pampered, isn’t that still a boss?” Ning Fei finally got up. As he straightened his clothes, he casually flicked his sleeve, and the hem of his robe swung, hitting Duan Yunhong in the face, who hadn’t managed to stand up yet.
“…!” Duan Yunhong grabbed the robe from his face and clicked his tongue in annoyance.
“Why are you putting on such a sour face?” Ning Fei knew him too well. Even if he couldn’t guess his thoughts, he was very familiar with his kinks. “If you don’t like it, say so.”
“It’s always you who likes to make a fuss during meals,” Duan Yunhong stood up, but he didn’t release the hem of Ning Fei’s robe. “If you don’t want others gossiping, I’ll just say you’re my retainer, and forbid the servants from mentioning anything related to it to you. As for what they say in private, you don’t need to care.”
“Me, a retainer of the Second Prince, obscure and unknown. If I disappeared, no one would look for me. But if I were poached by his rivals and he found out, would I be left alone? Am I here to sleep or to stir up trouble?” Ning Fei paused, then wore a strange expression. “Director Duan, don’t talk about me. You’re the one who likes to poach people during meals.”
“Then let’s eat,” Duan Yunhong finally released his clothes and sat down at the table. “Don’t cause trouble before we finish eating.”
“You were the one who specifically asked me to wait for you to eat, and now you’re complaining that I’m causing trouble.” Ning Fei leaned on the back of a chair and sneered. “Do you want me to serve you, General Duan?”
“Are you ever going to stop with your sarcasm?” Duan Yunhong said. “Then I’ll call someone to serve you. Is that alright?”
Ning Fei: “Call someone else?”
Duan Yunhong had no choice but to serve him personally. He turned around and stuffed food into Ning Fei’s mouth. “I’ll serve you. Sit down and eat!”
Ning Fei chuckled and finally sat down to eat together.
*
Ning Fei wasn’t really there to just eat. Since he had stayed, he still wanted to know the truth about certain things.
The first was how Duan Yunhong managed to get those two women to Dong Lingyan’s side.
Duan Yunhong didn’t hide anything. He said that he arranged for the Prime Minister’s wife and daughter to be attacked during their pilgrimage. He also placed people around Dong Lingyan, urging him to “pass by” nearby at the right time and further encouraging him to save them. Later, the letters Dong Lingyan and the Prime Minister’s daughter wrote to each other were also delivered with the help of Duan Yunhong’s people. Furthermore, the gifts that the two gave each other were actually suggested by Duan Yunhong’s planted individuals.
Ning Fei commented, “So, you were actually helping them with their relationship. Romance master, General Duan.”
“Not entirely,” Duan Yunhong also critically assessed. “They were just more love-brained themselves. Give them a little nudge, and they’ll come up with a bunch of fantasies.”
As for the foreign tribe’s Great Elder’s daughter, that was even simpler. Duan Yunhong took advantage of her sneaking into the country with her men, and incited Dong Lingyan to leave the royal capital. Then, he drugged both her and Dong Lingyan, and threw them onto a bed. What happened afterward went more smoothly than Duan Yunhong had originally planned. He barely had to do anything else, and those two bickering lovers grew closer and advanced rapidly on their own.
Duan Yunhong described everything very simply, glossing over some parts with a few words. But Ning Fei knew that things couldn’t have been so easy. Even if Duan Yunhong was playing the role of a General, he still had to use his cards skillfully to achieve such a favorable situation.
“In that case, that idiot Chonglin lost fairly,” Ning Fei scooped up several spoonfuls of diced chicken and eggplant and clicked his tongue in admiration. “How much did you pay him?”
Duan Yunhong said, “All the fortune I can receive in this world.”
“That’s too much! He’s not worth it at all!” Ning Fei exclaimed in surprise. “No wonder he dared to trick me into coming here. He could not only get me into trouble but also earn a large sum of money on the side.”
“I only made that agreement with him, but I only gave him 1/3 of the ‘deposit’ beforehand,” Duan Yunhong said. “As for the rest, regardless of whether you came or not, or what the result was after you came, I was planning to renege on it.”
“But your agreement…?”
“The Management Bureau’s so-called ‘contractual constraints’ and ‘penalties for breach of contract’ have no real meaning for us Travelers. They’re just minor inconveniences.”
“Pfft, typical bandit. I knew it. How could you waste so much fortune on the Management Bureau’s people for nothing? I remember someone saying that you people would rather scatter your fortune directly than give the Management Bureau a single point.” Ning Fei raised an eyebrow. “But 1/3 is still too much. Chonglin still got a free ride.”
Duan Yunhong asked, “Do you have a conflict with him?”
“I assisted him once before, and that time it was successful. But he was like an idiot, didn’t understand anything, had to ask about everything, and even opposed me. Later, I got annoyed and became a bit ruthless. Not only with the Transmigrators, but with him too. I took advantage of pushing the mission to mess with him a few times.” Ning Fei said harsh words in a relaxed tone. “Later, when the mission ended, he publicly cursed me in the Management Bureau. I turned around and submitted the entire mission as a case study to the Main System. His embarrassing example is still circulating in the public information. Of course, he hates me.”
“Hasn’t he realized that he’s far inferior to you?” Duan Yunhong narrowed his eyes. “What good will come of opposing you?”
“Before, other than scolding me a few times, he didn’t dare to do anything. He’s just an insignificant nobody in the Bureau. He only dares to act mighty in the mission worlds, and even that’s with an identity bought with wasted fortune.” Ning Fei shrugged. “He just wants to see me have more enemies, hoping to use someone else’s hand to teach me a lesson.”
“So you’re just going to let him off like that?”
“No,” Ning Fei poured himself another glass of wine. “I’m going to report him as soon as I get back. I’m going to make a big accusation. Say that he colluded with bandits, betrayed his colleagues, and privately obtained a large amount of ‘illegal income’ from the bandits’ hands…”
Duan Yunhong narrowed his eyes slightly. “Are you reporting him or reporting me?”
“Little kids make choices. I’m reporting everyone.” Ning Fei picked up his wine glass and said with a smile, “Duan Yunhong, you’re quite impressive. Why haven’t I seen any warnings about you on the announcements? Then I’ll help you make up for it.”
With that, he drank the wine in the small cup again and commented, “…This wine is better than the one at noon. The General is a bit richer than the Prime Minister’s son, but the bottle is too small.”
“The place you had lunch at was just ordinary. Why would he spend money on you?” Duan Yunhong simply put the small wine pot next to him in front of Ning Fei. “Before you, I hadn’t encountered people from the Management Bureau for a long time, and I hadn’t seriously dealt with these Transmigrator’s affairs for a long time either. I was just messing around. That’s probably why you didn’t notice me, right? Actually, I used to be as diligent as you for a while, but then I got tired of it. Don’t you think it’s meaningless? It’s better to live your own life than to torment those Transmigrator’s.”
Ning Fei didn’t believe his words. “You’re putting on a good show. If you were lying flat, then why were you going against me before?”
Duan Yunhong avoided eye contact. “…I wasn’t deliberately going against you. I was just playing around when I had the chance. If I was serious about snatching it, would I have agreed to give Su Cenxi a chance later?”
“Such a strange hesitation.” Ning Fei naturally took his wine bottle and poured himself wine, teasing, “But you still went against me after giving Su Cenxi a chance. Could it be that you actually wanted to see me in a fluster sometimes? Are you a little kid who uses hindering others to attract attention?”
“You’re thinking too much,” Duan Yunhong replied. “Unless I disrupt his career, do I have to help him according to your wishes? I was just completing what my identity had to do, making more money in that world, so I could live more comfortably.”
“Like how you’ve basically ruined Dong Lingyan’s mission now, but you’re still seriously fulfilling your duties as a General?” Ning Fei slowly drank his wine and commented, “You’re quite responsible in strange places. So you’re actually returning to your roots and starting to experience life again?”
“You’re the exact opposite. As long as you can complete the original owner’s mission, it doesn’t matter what the job of the identity role is, right?” Duan Yunhong said. “And do you always leave as soon as the mission ends? Don’t you ever relax and live your own life in those worlds?”
“I do. But I don’t like taking vacations in mission worlds, so I work intensively for a period of time and then apply to take a vacation in a world without missions.” Ning Fei actually replied to him. “And I wouldn’t have taken such a tight schedule between two jobs. It was Chonglin who kept urging me in the assistance application, so I came here non-stop after my last job ended. Otherwise, after I decided I didn’t want to do this, I would have left long ago. Why would I stay and lie down for a few days?”
Duan Yunhong asked, “Are you giving up because you think this situation is too difficult to turn around, or because you hate that Chonglin?”
“Both. But of course, Chonglin makes me even more annoyed. I don’t want to bother turning this around.” As Ning Fei said this, he extended the index finger of his hand holding the wine glass and pointed it at Duan Yunhong. “Now I have to add you to the equation.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you.” Ning Fei raised his head and finished another glass of wine. “You already have the advantage. I don’t want to struggle and work hard under you. Wouldn’t that just be giving you something to eat with your wine?”
Duan Yunhong saw the redness at the corner of his eyes and said in a deep voice, “Then if it weren’t for me and Chonglin, would you turn this around? Can you do it?”
“Yeah,” Ning Fei glanced at him and smiled softly. “You don’t think I’m just putting on a tough act because I really have no other choice, do you? Even if I can’t guarantee a 100% turnaround, I can still make a move.”
Duan Yunhong felt that the glance had a special meaning. He flexed his fingers, his voice still calm, “For example?”
“For example… kill that foreign woman and frame the Prime Minister’s daughter, provoking the foreign tribe’s hatred for Dong Lingyan and the Prime Minister.” Ning Fei’s tone was leisurely, but the words he spoke were extremely bloody. “Or, in the future, when the Prime Minister’s daughter has children, kill the child and frame the foreign woman. That way, Dong Lingyan and the Prime Minister will hate the foreign woman, and the buffer zone between the foreign tribe and this country will disappear. Ah, right—”
Ning Fei poured another glass of wine, but this time he didn’t drink it himself. Instead, he handed it to Duan Yunhong’s lips, “I also have to do something for the General, since he is the main force in attacking the foreign tribe. I have to give him some motivation. He has no parents, no wife, no children. What should I do? Kill two of his closest subordinates and frame the foreign woman’s two strong men.”
Duan Yunhong was stunned, his gaze fixed on him.
Ning Fei saw that he didn’t move and sneered, “What’s wrong? Are you scared? Or didn’t expect me to be so cruel and feel disgusted?”
“…No,” Duan Yunhong came back to his senses, holding Ning Fei’s hand and drinking the wine in the glass in one gulp. “I just think you seem a little drunk.”
“Bullshit,” Ning Fei said teasingly, “You think I’m joking because I’ve had too much to drink? Don’t think I’m a goody-two-shoes… Hey!”
Duan Yunhong grabbed his hand and pulled him forcefully to his side.
Ning Fei was caught off guard and pulled up, then lost his balance and fell onto his lap. With this, Ning Fei discovered the secret under the wide robe, turned his head to look at Duan Yunhong in some surprise: “Oh? Which XP did I poke again… Mmm.”
Duan Yunhong kissed him, then whispered close to him after kissing him, “You’ll get drunk if you drink more, so let’s do it first.”
Ning Fei laughed and tugged at his belt: “Let’s do it then, no need to make excuses.”
