Intimate Trial Chapter 1
byChapter 1
Shen Silin stood in the corridor outside the CEO’s Office at Ye’s Group, holding her resume. The position she was interviewing for was CEO Assistant. This role had not originally been vacant, but for some unknown reason, the previous assistant had been suddenly transferred to the Singapore Branch not long ago. For Shen Silin, the reason was unimportant; the result was what mattered.
There were four candidates interviewing—three women and one man. Based purely on academic background, Shen Silin had the advantage, but the final decision was not in her hands.
She was the last one called in. Inside the conference room, Ye Chang sat in the middle, flanked by two senior executives from the Human Resources Department. Ye Chang was looking down at the resume in her hands and never once raised her eyes to look at Shen Silin as she entered. The interview process was led by the two people beside her, with standard, non-tricky questions.
Just as one of the interviewers stood up, preparing to dismiss Shen Silin to wait for news, Ye Chang, who had been silent, finally put down the resume.
“I seem to recall,” Ye Chang began, her voice clear and steady, yet the air suddenly solidified, “that your family’s company was bankrupted by me.”
Shen Silin’s steps halted. She hadn’t expected Ye Chang to bring it up now, much less in such a direct manner. The two interviewers beside them were clearly caught off guard, a flash of astonishment and nervousness crossing their faces—if they hired someone who harbored resentment toward the CEO, they would be held accountable should any problems arise later.
The conference room fell silent for a moment. Shen Silin met Ye Chang’s gaze, which finally lifted. It was calm and unruffled, revealing no emotion.
“Yes,” Shen Silin replied, her voice equally steady, “it was bankrupted by you.”
The two interviewers secretly drew a sharp breath.
Ye Chang’s fingers tapped lightly on the polished tabletop. The rhythmic knocking was exceptionally clear in the silence, as if striking everyone’s heartstrings. On the fourth tap, she spoke again:
“Then why should I hire someone who might hold a grudge against me? Especially for such an important position.”
The question was sharp, cutting straight to the core.
Shen Silin’s fingertips tightened slightly, but her expression remained composed. She knew this was her last chance, and her only leverage.
“Because I am desperate,” she said, enunciating every word clearly, “and because you like me.”
“Hiss—”
This time, the intake of breath from the two interviewers was much more audible. They exchanged a shocked glance—the gossip today seemed overly sensational.
The conference room descended into dead silence. Shen Silin could hear her own heartbeat clearly. Two years had passed. She had rejected Ye Chang without mercy back then, and she had no certainty whether that “liking” still existed now. This was a gamble.
Ye Chang watched her silently for a few seconds, then suddenly let out a very slight laugh. The amusement didn’t reach her eyes and vanished instantly. She turned to the two interviewers, whose expressions were complex, and her tone was unquestionable: “She’s the one.”
With a single sentence, the matter was settled.
The interviewer who had been standing immediately extended a hand: “Congratulations, Miss Shen. Welcome to Ye’s Group. You can complete the onboarding process tomorrow.”
Shen Silin shook her hand, her palm slightly damp with sweat: “Thank you for giving me this opportunity.”
She walked out of the conference room, and the door closed softly behind her. One interviewer spoke up, worriedly: “CEO Ye, she is, after all…”
“It’s fine,” Ye Chang picked up the resume again, her gaze resting on a certain section. “I know what I’m doing.”
Stepping out of the Ye’s Group building, Shen Silin stood by the roadside waiting for a car. The evening breeze brushed her cheek, carrying the unique hustle and bustle of the city. Thinking of the interview result, her lips curved into a very slight smile, and she murmured to herself, “Since you’re Love-Obsessed… you can’t blame me.”
The ride-share car stopped right in front of her. She pulled open the door, and her figure disappeared into the cabin.
That night, in a high-end apartment.
The sound of the television news echoed in the slightly empty living room:
“…at 3:00 PM on August 14, 2025, the police successfully apprehended Cui Moumou, the main culprit in the former Fu’an Mental Hospital case. After his arrest, Cui Moumou confessed to more individuals involved in the case…”
The woman on the sofa was holding a beautiful Ragdoll cat, her slender fingers gently stroking the cat’s head intermittently. She stared at the screen and muttered softly, “Another one. Two more to go… The police are still too slow.”
Just then, the sound of a wheelchair sliding was heard. A little girl pushed her own wheelchair to the sofa and asked softly, “Auntie, can I not go to school tomorrow?”
The woman picked up her phone, quickly sent a message, and then turned, her tone gentle: “I’ve already requested leave for you. Tell Wu Qi where you want to go tomorrow, and she will accompany you.”
“Okay, Auntie.” The girl nodded obediently.
The woman picked up the remote control and turned off the television, gently placing the Ragdoll cat into the girl’s arms. Then, she pushed the wheelchair, taking the girl back to her room. Silence returned to the living room, broken only by the silent flickering of the city lights outside the window.
