Qi Ye was too tired juggling work and comics. Although he said he wasn’t, Shi Ran could see how exhausted he was. After careful discussion, Qi Ye decided to challenge himself with a full-time commitment for a year.
Qi Ye’s family agreed with this decision. They understood his personality and knew he was indeed suited to working independently. They told Qi Ye to pursue it without worries, and they would support him.
Among their friends, only Li Tianyi raised objections. The once adventurous Li Tianyi now advised Qi Ye to seek stability first and work for a few more years.
Perhaps because his girlfriend wasn’t around, Li Tianyi had started taking on important roles in his family’s company, and his approach to problem-solving had become more conservative.
Shi Ran carefully explained to Li Tianyi that Qi Ye had a great opportunity that he needed to seize now, or it would be gone. Drawing comics was also an extremely physically demanding job. If he forced himself to juggle it with work, his health might collapse.
Shi Ran wanted Qi Ye to be able to wholeheartedly pursue what he loved. This kind of mindset might fade away in a few years, and it would be a shame not to seize the moment. Even if the comics didn’t succeed in this year, this time would become a special gift.

Qi Ye and Shi Ran quickly adapted to this situation. Qi Ye liked working from home, and Shi Ran liked coming home to someone.
After about two months, they moved to a new home, but still within the same residential complex. This new place simply had two more rooms and a better view.
Qi Ye had his own dedicated studio, and Shi Ran had an extra study. However, he recently converted it into a gym; it seemed he didn’t need that many books.
3
Qi Ye recently added a new activity: picking Shi Ran up from work.
Sitting for too long wasn’t good for his health. Shi Ran gave him a strict schedule, including a walk in the residential complex. Qi Ye secretly changed the route to walking to Shi Ran’s company.
This kind of exercise would give him more motivation and help him stick to it.
4
A new member joined the family: a chubby Golden Retriever.
Although it now looked sleek and round, Shi Ran first saw it as a small mud ball.
Shi Ran found it while on a business trip. It was hiding in the bushes outside a coffee shop. Shi Ran had finished talking to his client and was planning to stay a little longer before clocking out. He was about to send a message to his boyfriend when he felt something in the bushes watching him.
Shi Ran put down his phone and went to take a look. A large lump of mud darted out and rubbed affectionately against Shi Ran’s pants.
From its constantly wagging tail, Shi Ran recognized that it was a dog.
After feeding it some milk, a kind lady at the coffee shop gave Shi Ran a cardboard box. Shi Ran held it in his arms and went to the pet store. He would never forget the desperate and incredulous look on the shop assistant’s face as he slowly said, “Bro, it’s my first day on the job.”
Shi Ran thought for a moment and said, “Or, how about I wash it?”
“Forget it.” The shop assistant put on gloves with a resigned expression.
Although this young man looked disgusted by it now, later their Tutu would be the young man’s favorite customer, without a doubt.
Because it was so well-behaved and didn’t bark at all, whether it was being washed or blown dry, Tutu simply enjoyed it with its eyes closed.
The same went for trimming its fur. Tutu had such a trusting look in its eyes that anyone who saw it would be moved. At least, Shi Ran thought so.
It was named Tutu because it was covered in mud when he found it. Shi Ran thought of it while carrying it to the pet store.
After its bath, Tutu wasn’t exactly stunning, but anyone who saw it would agree that it was an adorably perfect puppy.
The pet store assistant also felt a sense of accomplishment and said, “It’s so well-behaved. It’s just too skinny. It looks like it’s been hungry for a long time. Let’s feed it some dog food.”
“I just fed it some milk. It looks like it’s been hungry for a long time, so I don’t dare to feed it too much,” Shi Ran said. “Is there a pet hospital nearby? I’ll take it for a checkup.”
“Yes, there’s one just ahead,” the assistant pointed him in the direction.
After the checkup, which revealed no illnesses, Shi Ran bought dog food, a dog bed, a leash, and some small toys.
The next problem was how to convince Qi Ye.
Qi Ye had told Shi Ran before about their family raising a dog. They had taken care of a friend’s dog for a year, and the whole family was very sad when the dog was taken back.
Because they were too easily attached, they had always been afraid to get another one.
Coincidentally, that was also a Golden Retriever.
5
Shi Ran prepared a mountain of words to persuade Qi Ye. He knew that Qi Ye would agree if it was something he wanted to do.
But Shi Ran still hoped that Qi Ye would also like and truly accept Tutu, not just do it for him.
Shi Ran planned to bring the dog home, see Qi Ye’s reaction, and then use his reaction to tailor his words accordingly.
However, to his surprise, Qi Ye stared at Tutu for a moment, then stepped forward and hugged it, saying, “You’re back.”
Shi Ran felt that Qi Ye was treating Tutu as the dog that had left their family years ago and carefully reminded him, “Qi Ye, its name is Tutu.”
Qi Ye stroked its head: “That’s nice.”
Shi Ran: “It’s a new dog, not the one from back then, okay?”
“I know.” Qi Ye paused, suddenly realizing, and smiled at him, “That ‘you’re back’ was for you.”
Shi Ran: “…… Oh.”
Qi Ye put Tutu down. It immediately began sniffing around the house, getting used to its new home. Shi Ran leaned closer to Qi Ye: “I brought a puppy home without saying anything. Are you angry?”
Qi Ye put his arm around his shoulder and said softly, “I guessed it when you said on the phone that there was a special gift.”
It was probably when Tutu was getting its fur trimmed at the pet store that Qi Ye had called.
“Your guessing ability is too amazing,” Shi Ran admired.
Qi Ye chuckled, “Actually, I heard the sounds over the phone, saying things like ‘the puppy’s so well-behaved’.”
That was the voice of the pet store assistant.
Shi Ran confirmed again, “You really like it, right?”
“Of course,” Qi Ye said, “Now that we have it, we’ll probably go out more.”
“Right, it can help you exercise,” Shi Ran nodded.
Fate was so amazing. Before this, Shi Ran had never thought about getting a pet. But today, when Tutu circled him and rubbed against his pants, Shi Ran decided to take it home without a second thought.
6
Tutu quickly became everyone’s favorite. Shi Ran’s grandfather and Qi Ye’s parents all loved it, especially Qi Xue. She lived alone and really needed a pet companion. She repeatedly hinted that she and Tutu were destined to be together and asked if they could give it to her.
Shi Ran and Qi Ye pretended not to hear.
As for Tutu’s origins, everyone was still unable to figure them out. It couldn’t talk and couldn’t tell anyone what it had experienced before or what kind of encounter had made it choose Shi Ran.
It could only be attributed to fate.
Shi Ran looked at Qi Ye beside him. It was the same for them.
Although their relationship depended entirely on human effort, being able to meet and be assigned to the same class as classmates was a wonderful fate.
7
The family of three was currently adjusting well, except for Tutu’s growing ability to destroy the house.
Golden Retrievers were supposed to be well-behaved, Shi Ran and Qi Ye thought helplessly. Did it have a Husky living inside it?
8
They were planning a trip for the family of three, no, they hadn’t decided whether to bring Tutu yet.
Shi Ran was going to observe it for a while and give it a score. It could only go if it passed. However, Tutu, who was currently gnawing on the sofa, didn’t care.
