IHOEAYSTTTIW Chapter 18
by VolareChapter 18: Keep Spinning Your Yarn, If I Believe You, I’m a Dog… Woof Woof
Another one urging marriage.
It was clearly the same words, but Yun Qi found the Village Head’s words exceptionally pleasing to the ear, even that somewhat hypocritical smile looked kind and amiable. His ears perked up slightly, awaiting Lin Yan’s reply.
Lin Yan let out a satisfied burp and found a reasonable excuse: “Let’s wait a couple of days; the Village Head is busy these days.”
The Village Head gestured around with his hand, disdainfully saying, “Your place is so small, are two people still busy?”
Lin Yan nodded like a pecking chicken: “Busy, very busy.”
“Alright, alright, alright.” The Village Head was too lazy to argue with Lin Yan. For the sake of the fish head, he chose to give him a heads-up. “I’m reminding you, the household registration checks have been strict recently. You and Xiao Qi should get things done quickly, or… if you can find his previous household registration, that’s also an option.”
Seemingly two choices, but in reality, there was only one.
The Village Head was certain that Lin Yan couldn’t produce Yun Qi’s previous household registration. Or rather, most of these bought or refugee people were drifters without a registered household. Lin Yan was also well aware that Yun Qi did have a household registration, but it was in the palace.
Which rounded up to zero.
“Xiao Qi is still young,” Lin Yan said. After racking his brain for a while, he finally found a somewhat less lame excuse. He didn’t want to get married so young, and Yun Qi was only seventeen, high school age.
Of course, that’s what he thought. In the Great Zhou, that age meant children were already running all over the place.
“Seventeen is not young,” the Village Head said. He couldn’t understand what Lin Yan was hesitating about. It was such a simple matter, yet he insisted on dragging his feet. He issued a final warning: “You’re not young either. Let’s set the date for this month.”
Lin Yan resorted to his old trick. He took two jars of wine from the corner of the wall and thrust them into the Village Head’s arms: “No rush, after this busy period is over, then…”
“Can’t wait any longer,” the Village Head said, looking at the wine in front of him. He swallowed hard, pushed the wine back, cupped his hands towards the two of them, and said, “I’ll be waiting for your wedding banquet. Remember to buy ‘Daughter’s Red’ from Drunken Pleasure Tower.”
With the meal eaten, the wine drunk, and the important matters discussed, the Village Head gave a satisfied burp and swayed his way out.
Yun Qi saw him off, a flash of disappointment crossing his face. By the time he returned to the house, he had returned to his usual self.
Lin Yan had long forgotten the topic they were discussing and had already started packing things.
From the courtyard gate to the house, it wasn’t a long journey. Yun Qi had already prepared himself mentally. He took over the work in Lin Yan’s hands, trying to make his tone sound as relaxed as possible: “Big Brother, let’s go to Capital City for fun.”
“But you…”
“It’s okay, I…” Yun Qi hesitated slightly, and said the truth, “I have a good relationship with the new Emperor.”
Lin Yan didn’t believe Yun Qi’s made-up stories. He rarely spoke the truth. Lin Yan thought: you little kid is trying to fool a ghost?
“You just transmigrated, how did you get a good relationship?” As he spoke, Lin Yan suddenly thought of a possibility he had ignored, “You remember everything from the original owner?”
“I…”
Yun Qi despised his own hesitation and scorned his own baseness.
Hadn’t he already decided to come clean, hadn’t he decided to be honest with each other? How come the words wouldn’t come out when they were right at his lips?
While he was internally scolding himself, he changed the subject. Yun Qi pointed out the window. The crops that Lin Yan had planted were already lush and green, some of them already bearing strange and unusual fruits: “If we go to Capital City, what will happen to Big Brother’s crops?”
Lin Yan didn’t think much of it: “I’ll just hire a car again. Anyway, they all grow about the same, so a little setback won’t be anything.”
Lin Yan treasured his seeds, and his eyes would light up every time he talked about them. Yun Qi had also seen many introductions to these seeds on his cellphone and had quietly noted down the planting methods in a small notebook. It was much more useful than that book he bought before about farming. This could be considered one of the reasons he stayed here.
Yun Qi tentatively brought up the subject: “If people from the Ministry of Works saw Big Brother’s seeds, they would probably be very envious.”
“Why…” Lin Yan quickly realized that for him, these things were just a thought, just a dish, but for this era, they had a different meaning. He wasn’t a saint, but he didn’t have a reason to refuse something that was so easy to do.
Lin Yan looked out the window and chuckled lightly, “If they want seeds, I’ll give them to them. If these things become widespread, they might save a lot of lives.”
Lin Yan’s nonchalant attitude made Yun Qi feel even more base. He said “Mr. is righteous,” but didn’t know what else to say.
“How did we get onto this topic?” Lin Yan was a little embarrassed by the compliment. He scratched his head and finally got back on track. “Actually, I really want to go to Capital City to see it. There are many fun things there, and maybe I can find a way to go home, but…”
Yun Qi nodded and muttered softly, “Big Brother is doing this because of me.”
“Not entirely,” Lin Yan ran his hand over the carved flowers on the table, looking at the pure wooden beams and roof ridges. He sighed and said, “I’ve always thought that transmigrating is a sad thing. Someone like me, who has nothing to worry about, still misses the friends around him, the technology and ideas of that era, let alone others.”
In Yun Qi’s memory, Lin Yan was always smiling. Yun Qi didn’t understand how someone could be so optimistic and simple, but he liked Lin Yan this way. When Lin Yan said that sentence just now, he was still smiling, but the smile revealed a bit of reluctance and a hint of sadness. Yun Qi didn’t like Lin Yan like this, he wanted to comfort him, but didn’t know where to start.
“Fortunately, I’m still very lucky.” The sad state only lasted for half a minute, and Lin Yan returned to his usual self. He vigorously rubbed Yun Qi’s hair, looking at Yun Qi’s newly created hairstyle and chuckling, “The system says there is a way to go back, and I met you. At least there is someone who can understand me.”
…
The heart that Yun Qi had put down finally died.
Lin Yan’s hope rested on his lies, if he confessed now…
Yun Qi crushed the words that he hadn’t said, a crazy brainstorming session, all kinds of information flashing back in his mind, and finally compiled a new story.
Lin Yan poured his heart out for a long time, and then realized that the person he was confiding in had crashed.
Some words, if they weren’t spoken when the atmosphere was right, would be even less desirable to say when the atmosphere was gone.
Lin Yan tugged on Yun Qi’s face, trying to wake up the crashed person: “What are you thinking about?”
“Ah, um…” Yun Qi said, looking like he had just woken up from a dream, barely managing a smile: “I’m saying that we can go to Capital City.”
“Oh?”
Lin Yan listened attentively, and Yun Qi said sincerely, uttering his newly made-up story: “Big Brother, do you believe in past lives and present lives?”
“We already have transmigrating, what’s so strange about past lives and present lives…” Lin Yan pointed at Yun Qi, suddenly realizing, “You mean?”
“Yes.” Seeing that Lin Yan had this reaction, Yun Qi knew that he had guessed right. He cultivated his emotions and continued to tell the story, “I have the memories of the original owner, so the third brother really isn’t like what the outside world says. I miss him a lot, although in the current situation, I can probably only take a look from afar…”
Lin Yan stood up suddenly, put his arm around Yun Qi, and walked to the inner room, his voice filled with excitement: “Let’s go, let’s go, pack our things now, we’re going to Capital City.”
