Chapter 2: Mu Chuang is Straight
Mu Chuang kept putting food on Lin Xi’s plate while shamelessly stuffing his own stomach, completely ignoring the conversation between the elders and Aunt Zhang.
To put it bluntly, he had seen Aunt Zhang’s niece. She might be considered decent locally, but she was a far cry from the women pursuing him in the city.
Therefore, no matter how eloquently Aunt Zhang spoke, Mu Chuang showed no interest.
But since they were all eating at the same table, he couldn’t just kick her out, could he?
“Xi Xi, eat more,” when he got impatient, Mu Chuang deliberately raised his voice and kept putting food on Lin Xi’s plate. “Look how skinny you are. I bet you won’t last a few days of overtime.”
He kept giving him good meat and good dishes, putting the ones with more meat and fewer bones into Lin Xi’s bowl, which made Aunt Zhang frown.
“If Xi Xi wasn’t a young man, I would have thought he was the girlfriend you brought back,” she couldn’t help but say sarcastically, sounding cheerful but making people feel very uncomfortable.
Mu Chuang, as if finally seizing a reason, began to show his displeasure. “Aunt Zhang, watch your words. Xi Xi and I are both straight. Don’t try to force things that don’t belong together, or it will affect our reputation.”
After saying that, he realized that the sentence was a bit inappropriate, so he quickly turned to Lin Xi. “I’m just using a metaphor, Xi Xi, don’t take it to heart.”
Lin Xi nodded, knowing which sentence he was explaining. That wasn’t what he was focusing on anyway, so he didn’t mind at all. He was only observing Mu Chuang’s attitude when mentioning things between two men.
When he heard Aunt Zhang compare him to his girlfriend just now, he had even peeked at Mu Chuang’s face, but he didn’t expect such a strong reaction.
He gripped the chopsticks tightly, accidentally almost knocking over the bowl.
Mu Chuang quickly helped him steady the bowl, staring at him with a puzzled look.
Aunt Zhang, however, misunderstood, thinking that these two young men were uneducated, daring to throw a tantrum in front of an elder like her.
“Young people are impetuous and will suffer sooner or later.” She put down her chopsticks, looking like she was about to leave. “Old Chen’s family has three sons who are still single, and they don’t even bother hiring a matchmaker, even if you pay them. Yet you’re so good that you don’t want someone who comes to your door. Do you really think you’re made of gold?”
“Don’t wait until your prime years are over, and you become leftovers that no one wants.” Her last sentence mercilessly stabbed into the hearts of Mu Chuang’s parents.
These days, which family doesn’t want a daughter-in-law? Being scared like this, they panicked.
“Sister Zhang, calm down.” Mu Chuang’s mother quickly held her back, looking apologetic. “The child is too young and doesn’t know better. Please forgive him.”
Then she scolded Mu Chuang, “You senseless boy, Aunt Zhang is kindly thinking about your lifelong happiness, but you’re so rude. You’ve eaten twenty-odd years of free food for nothing.”
“Hurry up and apologize,” she said finally, signaling Mu Chuang to apologize to Aunt Zhang.
However, Mu Chuang sat as steady as Mount Tai, not getting up and not intending to say anything nice. Instead, he said nonchalantly, “There are women everywhere. As long as I want to, I can bring a bunch back anytime. It’s up to you to choose who you want as your daughter-in-law. Why bother hiring a middleman?”
As soon as the words “middleman” came out, Aunt Zhang’s face turned black.
“You boy really have no manners. I might as well not do this matchmaking.” She stood up abruptly and was about to leave without saying a word.
Mu Chuang’s mother quickly pulled her back. “Sister Zhang, calm down…”
But before she could finish speaking, Mu Chuang interrupted, “Don’t mind her. Let her go if she wants to.”
He had finally come back home, and he had been in a bad mood since he entered the door. Mu Chuang felt extremely annoyed.
It’s not like no one is pursuing him. When he spends more time with those women, he’ll pick the most suitable one and find a time to get married. Why bother hiring a matchmaker?
Moreover, he didn’t like Aunt Zhang’s niece. She came in and immediately tried to take advantage of him. Did men have no right to choose a partner? Did he have to accept any woman he was pointed at, or was he born to be a licking dog?
“Bullshit!” Mu Chuang cursed in his heart. “I disdain doing things with a low voice and a submissive attitude.”
But what he didn’t know was that this sentence would later slap him in the face regarding Lin Xi.
After hearing his words, Aunt Zhang ignored Mu Chuang’s mother’s attempts to persuade her and left in a fit of anger.
It was said that as soon as she turned around, she introduced her niece to the eldest son of Old Chen’s family and pocketed a referral fee of sixty thousand yuan.
Mu Chuang’s mother was shocked when she found out.
The happiest person about this failed marriage was Lin Xi. Mu Chuang didn’t have a potential partner yet, and he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
After spending the New Year at home, on the sixth day of the first lunar month, he followed Mu Chuang to City A, where he worked.
Before leaving, Mu Chuang suddenly opened the trunk, which was filled with the most popular anime plush dolls at the moment, making Lin Xi unable to take his eyes off them.
“I almost forgot, if I didn’t take them out now, I would have to take them back.” He picked them out one by one and held them in his arms. “These were all given by those girls. The room outside is small and can’t fit them, and it wouldn’t be reasonable to throw them away, so I had to bring them back and put them at home.”
Lin Xi’s eyes, which had just lit up, dimmed again. He originally thought that Mu Chuang had bought them himself, and he was planning to shamelessly ask for one. He didn’t expect that they were all given by those girls, and suddenly he lost interest in these dolls.
“Xi Xi, help me take some, please. Take them inside and put them in my room.” Mu Chuang had already hugged seven or eight, and he couldn’t hold any more, so he started ordering Lin Xi around.
Lin Xi stood there, unmoving, not wanting to touch the things those girls had given him.
Mu Chuang saw the disgust on his face and instantly misinterpreted his thoughts.
“What’s wrong, Xi Xi?” He turned his head, holding a pile of dolls, and asked him, “Do you think that I, a grown man, shouldn’t like these childish things?”
“No…no,” Lin Xi was afraid that the other party would see through him, so he quickly denied it. “Since they were given with good intentions, then we definitely have to keep them.”
After he finished speaking, he endured the jealousy in his heart, took a step forward to the trunk, and picked up the plush dolls inside one by one.
“I’ll put them in the room first. I might have to make another trip later.” Seeing this, Mu Chuang didn’t think too much about it, said that, and went in first.
Lin Xi picked up five or six dolls and held them in his arms, feeling like they weighed a thousand pounds, making it difficult for him to breathe.
Mu Chuang finished putting down the dolls in his hands and came back to find him still standing by the trunk, and finally couldn’t help but question him again.
“Xi Xi,” he stared at his face, as if trying to see through his heart from the changes in his expression, “What exactly is wrong with you? Ever since I came back this time, I’ve felt that you’re different from usual. Is there something you can’t say? Why don’t you tell your brother Chuang?”
