    Chapter 92

Lu Ziming opened her eyes again, five or six hours later.

“You’re awake? Here, water.” Unexpectedly, sitting next to Lu Ziming and taking care of her with a wet towel was Xu Rubing, whom she had just met. Seeing her finally awake, she twisted open a bottle of mineral water and handed it to her.

Due to excessive physical exertion, Lu Ziming, after returning to the convenience store, fell asleep leaning against a resting spot amidst the soft conversations of everyone.

It was Yao Jinglin who noticed she wasn’t sleeping comfortably and gently laid her down on the cardboard pieces spread out by the group, using Lu Ziming’s own bag as a pillow under her head.

Lu Ziming’s awakening wasn’t natural; she was startled awake by a nightmare. Since graduating from university, Lu Ziming rarely had such vivid dreams. Perhaps it was due to the exhaustion from work, or perhaps growing up had diminished some of her fantastical ideas.

Before graduation, Lu Ziming was still a student with many strange ideas. Although usually quiet and often lost in thought, her mind was filled with diverse thoughts. She often incorporated fantasies into her dreams, resulting in bizarre dreams. But after graduation, she rarely had such dreams. This one, however, was the most absurd she’d had in recent years.

She took the water bottle from Xu Rubing and took a large gulp, but while slowly swallowing, she inadvertently looked up and saw Xu Rubing staring directly at her.

She suddenly remembered the middle part of her dream, where she and Xu Rubing were lying in the same bed for some reason. The room was dimly lit, and she was suddenly embraced tightly by Xu Rubing, unable to move. The approaching breath and body temperature were so real that it scared her into the next dream.

She didn’t know why a girl she had only met once would be included in such a bizarre and embarrassing dream. Furthermore, she wasn’t even a man, yet she was inexplicably having a spring dream of being embraced by a girl in such a life-or-death situation!

It was simply unreasonable! Too absurd!

Seeing Xu Rubing staring at her, a strange sense of shame surged in her heart. She tried to hide it, but the sudden surge of emotion made her choke.

“Cough, cough, cough… Ugh, cough.” She quickly lowered her head, covering her mouth and coughing. She coughed so hard that her face turned red.

During the choking fit, the other two parts of the dream slowly reappeared in Lu Ziming’s mind—one was the image of Zhou Yuanyuan rubbing her eyes and crying sadly in front of her, making her feel heartache and want to comfort her, but she found that her body was not solid, and she couldn’t touch Zhou Yuanyuan at all.

“Am I dead??” Lu Ziming, terrified by this thought in the dream, was suddenly pulled out of the first dream as if by an invisible force and crashed into the second dream. Fortunately, the second dream was the scene with Xu Rubing in bed, so she was only stunned and felt no pain in the dream. Until she jumped into the third dream, it was so real that she thought it was the real world, and she couldn’t even distinguish it as a dream.

In the dream, she was fighting a large group of zombies, and gradually, as her strength was failing, a group of people came to support her. She didn’t recognize all of them, but Jiang Juncheng and Yao Jinglin were among them. First, a few came, then a group followed, and then people fought valiantly, one after another, until the zombies in front of her gradually decreased. Her whole body slowly relaxed from the initial tense state, and with everyone’s joint efforts, they finally eliminated the zombies.

She collapsed to the ground. Although her body was so tired that she couldn’t even move an inch, she could feel that her mood in the dream was very happy and relaxed, with a feeling that everything had finally settled.

But at that moment, she suddenly felt something cold and hard pressing against the back of her head.

As she wondered, Yao Jinglin’s voice came from behind her—”Thank you for your help, but we can’t leave any hidden dangers. The superiors said we can’t keep you. I’m sorry.”

As Yao Jinglin’s voice fell, Lu Ziming turned her head in astonishment, but before she could see Yao Jinglin’s expression clearly, she was startled awake from the dream.

She couldn’t remember whether she first felt the bullet pierce her or first heard the gunshot.

But she remembered the coldness and endless disappointment that arose from the bottom of her heart, and the sudden despair.

There was no way around it, the penetrating feeling in the depths of her soul was too strong.

As a result, when she choked, Yao Jinglin, who was resting nearby, also came over and patted her shoulder worriedly, asking, “Are you okay?”

Hearing her voice, Lu Ziming’s first reaction wasn’t to feel warmth, but to uncontrollably shiver.

“No, cough, I’m fine,” Lu Ziming replied crisply, subconsciously straightening her body, just dodging Yao Jinglin’s hand as it landed on her shoulder.
