BC Chapter 64
by VolareChapter 63
Although the various laboratories on the third basement level showed signs of being ransacked, Feng Yi and the other four continued to delve deeper without discovering any traces of anyone. This eased their initial tension. After all, their mission was not to investigate intruders or recover lost research data. Avoiding any contact with survivors or those with ulterior motives was the ideal situation for them.
The five carefully examined their assigned areas, confirming that there were no issues. They then exchanged glances and moved together to the security door leading from the third to the fourth level.
Feng Yi looked at the door in front of him, approached it, and felt the surface, immediately recognizing it as a specially made security door. Similar to a bank vault door, it possessed fireproof, anti-theft, and anti-destructive properties. The outer layer was made of stainless steel, and the inner layer contained an alloy steel anti-drilling plate, reinforced fire-resistant materials, and No. 500 concrete. The door resembled a large silver-white gate. There was no combination lock or keyhole on the outside; only a small sensor screen on the side edge displayed a red “No Entry” indicator.
This meant that only the two level four identification cards they possessed could open the door. According to Feng Yi’s plan, the two sets of identification cards for all five levels were kept by himself and Chen Su respectively. Starting with the level four access gate, Chen Su would be left to guard the door, responsible for covering their retreat and being prepared for any unexpected events.
Once they passed through level four and reached the entrance to level five, Deng Yao would be left to guard the door. Since Chen Su and Deng Yao had been with Feng Yi for a longer time, he felt more secure completing the mission knowing they were guarding the rear.
Therefore, Chen Su was left at the gate to level four. After swiping the card and opening the door, Feng Yi led the remaining three inside, guns raised.
The gate slowly closed behind them. The four descended the stairs, opened the fire door leading into level four, and found it to be completely dark inside.
However, this wasn’t entirely unexpected. Feng Yi had anticipated this and deliberately chose a gas mask helmet with night vision capabilities when preparing their equipment. At the doorway, the four activated their helmet’s night vision function and slowly entered basement level four.
Perhaps some of the stored chemicals on level four had leaked and caused a chemical reaction. After activating night vision, the four discovered that the entire level four space was filled with a fog similar to that produced by evaporating dry ice. Visibility was reduced to the point that they couldn’t see anything beyond ten meters.
Fortunately, the four were wearing gas masks connected to slender oxygen tanks, so they couldn’t smell the foul, fishy odor that permeated the entire level four space.
In this unknown environment, the four’s previously relaxed nerves tensed up once again.
The fog floated in the air, swirling and dissipating as they moved. The sound of their specialized military boots hitting the ground echoed through the silence.
After advancing twenty or thirty meters, a rustling sound suddenly came from the end of a side passage, as if something was running quickly. However, the fog was too thick; they couldn’t see anything at that distance.
But in the silence, the sudden sound was more terrifying than constant quiet.
Wu Shengwei, who had been walking two meters behind the other three, immediately moved closer to them after hearing the sound, stopping only when the distance between them was reduced to half a meter. The attention of Feng Yi and the others was drawn to the mysterious sound, so they didn’t have time to complain about him being such a scaredy-cat.
“…” The four looked at each other. Although they could barely make out their surroundings with night vision, they couldn’t see each other’s expressions clearly because they were wearing helmets. But they could guess that none of them looked very happy.
Living things… meant the environment was even more dangerous. Although they hadn’t directly encountered any zombies on their way here, they had a general understanding of the situation. Upon encountering the unknown creature, they almost simultaneously released the safety catches on their guns, loaded them, and prepared for battle.
Then, the rustling sound came from another direction. The four turned their guns towards the sound almost simultaneously, and a round, dark shape darted out from under the fog.
As the dark shape emerged from the fog, the four finally saw what it was.
It was a guinea pig with red eyes!
