    Chapter 39

It didn’t take long for the zombies gathered at the T-junction to be completely lured away by the SUV. The remaining ones could only slowly shuffle down the street, which posed no real threat to Lu Ziming and Zhou Yuanyuan. They waited in the tree for a while. Zhou Yuanyuan closed her eyes, carefully listening until the clamorous sounds of the zombie horde gathering together had completely faded away. Only then did she open her eyes and sigh in relief, saying, “We can go down now. Those guys are getting further and further away from us.”

“Okay,” Lu Ziming replied, tossing her weapon down from the tree. Then, she slowly moved to the lowest branch and descended in the same way she had climbed up.

However, neither she nor Zhou Yuanyuan noticed that one of the remaining fast zombies, originally squeezed to the side of the road by the zombie horde, was slowly getting up from the roadside. The sound of the blade hitting the ground when Lu Ziming threw her weapon had attracted its attention. The fast zombie, now standing, twisted its neck, making two “crack, crack” sounds of bone grinding together. Then, it charged towards Lu Ziming, who was about to let go and land, with a pounce like a jackal.

From the corner of the main street to the alley where Lu Ziming and Zhou Yuanyuan were hiding, there was only a strip of bushes and greenery. Because the fast zombie wasn’t large and moved quickly and lightly, it didn’t make much noise as it moved. Zhou Yuanyuan, still in the tree, was focused on watching Lu Ziming descend and didn’t notice the rapidly approaching fast zombie. The zombie, using both hands and feet, leaped forward like a cat, jumping over the bushes and landing in the alley where Lu Ziming was.

At this moment, Zhou Yuanyuan finally caught a glimpse of the fast zombie rushing towards them from the corner of her eye. She quickly looked up, and after seeing what it was, she immediately shouted, “Lu Ziming! Watch out!”

Lu Ziming was startled by her shout and accidentally loosened her grip on the safety rope. As a result, she landed right in front of the tree.

Before Lu Ziming, who had landed in a crouch, could turn around and assess the situation, she was struck squarely in the back by the pouncing fast zombie.

Fortunately, her backpack was still on her back, blocking most of the zombie’s attack and impact. After the collision, Lu Ziming and the zombie rolled away in opposite directions.

Zhou Yuanyuan wanted to help Lu Ziming, but without Lu Ziming’s assistance, she didn’t even know how to climb down from the tree safely.

She looked at the separated Lu Ziming and the zombie below the tree. Zhou Yuanyuan made a quick decision and raised the weapon in her hand, throwing it with all her might while the zombie was still trying to get up…

However, Zhou Yuanyuan’s aim with weapons was terrible. She had originally aimed the weapon to stab the zombie in the back, but as soon as it left her hand, Zhou Yuanyuan realized she had thrown it off course. Now, the weapon would only hit empty air, rendering it useless.

However, to her surprise, the zombie moved before the weapon completely landed. As a result, the inaccurate shot, due to the zombie’s movement, landed right on the joint of one of the zombie’s legs.

With a “crack” sound, one of the zombie’s legs was smashed and deformed, hanging limply in a sideways bend. The zombie, which had been gathering momentum to pounce on Lu Ziming again, lost the support of one leg and fell to the ground.

“Run! Run quickly, Lu Ziming!” From the tree, Zhou Yuanyuan could only hope that her previous strike would delay the fast zombie for a while. Seeing the zombie fall to the ground, she frantically shouted at Lu Ziming, who had rolled onto the alleyway.

But Lu Ziming was already dizzy from the impact and couldn’t react so quickly. She struggled to get up from the ground, instinctively clutching her stomach. She felt as if the impact had displaced her internal organs.

The fast zombie, which had just fallen to the ground, quickly adjusted its posture and got up again…

Because one leg was broken, the fast zombie’s sense of balance was obviously not as good as before. However, because they seemed unable to feel pain, the broken leg didn’t affect it as much as it would a normal person.

All their actions were driven by instinct. The desire for food made them fearless and relentless. So, the fast zombie simply adjusted its posture and charged at Lu Ziming again.

Lu Ziming, who had just stood up clutching her stomach, was obviously not prepared to face this new crisis.

Unlike the last time, the distance between the zombie and Lu Ziming was even shorter this time. So, if Lu Ziming was knocked down by this zombie, there was almost no chance of avoiding being bitten.

“Lu Ziming!!!” From the tree, Zhou Yuanyuan felt as if her heart was suddenly gripped by something, squeezing her to the point of suffocation. A desperate cry escaped her lips, her expression one of utter despair…

Was Lu Ziming… going to die? Would the person who had saved her time and time again also die?! Zhou Yuanyuan felt as if her brain had lost the ability to think at this moment.

And the figure of the fast zombie leaping up seemed to be moving towards Lu Ziming frame by frame, as if someone had pressed the slow-motion button…

Just as Lu Ziming was facing a life-or-death moment, a silver flash suddenly shot out from the other end of the alley. Before the fast zombie could reach Lu Ziming, its entire head was struck by the high-speed silver object. The impact of the silver flash shifted the zombie’s entire trajectory, narrowly missing Lu Ziming and causing it to crash to the ground again, face first.

However, even though the zombie’s entire head was covered in blood and gore and half of its face was scraped off, it still struggled to get up, staggering and trying to attack Lu Ziming again.

Lu Ziming finally came to her senses and instinctively took two steps back. She heard two “poof, poof” sounds as two more silver flashes shot from the alleyway, one piercing the zombie’s head and the other piercing its neck.

This time, the tenacious fast zombie finally staggered, fell to the ground, and stopped moving.

Lu Ziming stared blankly at the eliminated fast zombie, then looked towards the alleyway from where the two silver flashes had come. She saw a mountain bike parked there, and a strangely dressed figure on the bike waved at her. Then, the figure reached up and removed the full-coverage motorcycle helmet from their head, revealing a head of shiny black hair. They smiled friendly at Lu Ziming, a bright and sunny smile.
