Chapter Index

In the restroom, a middle-aged man was standing in front of the sink with his fists clenched and head down, his body trembling slightly, a few drops of sweat slowly trickling down his temples…

He slowly raised his head, looking at his pale face and purplish lips in the mirror. He nervously licked his lips, trying to calm his still slightly rapid breathing. After taking two deep breaths, he raised his slightly trembling hand, took off his coat, and slowly turned around.

Turning his head and looking in the mirror again, he immediately saw a scratch mark under the collar of his neck. The shirt he was wearing underneath was torn, and there were two wounds at the tear. The flesh was slightly turned out, and blood mixed with some yellowish pus had changed color at the tear.

The man’s pupils trembled, and he immediately put his coat back on. He turned back and stared anxiously at the bathroom door, fearing that someone might have seen what just happened.

This man was one of the two who had just run back, named Han Lin. He was an animal trainer at the Qingshui City Ocean Zoo. Relying on the skills he had developed from years of training animals, he had avoided many crises to survive to this day.

But he never expected that he would fail at this moment when he was about to usher in the dawn, and accidentally be scratched by that incredibly fast monster. But on second thought, considering the tragic deaths of the two people who didn’t make it back, he seemed lucky again. At least he only suffered a little injury now, and besides, being injured doesn’t necessarily mean he would turn into a monster.

Relax, relax. I’m fine, I’m doing great. The man’s fingers trembled slightly, but he still raised his head and turned to the mirror, twisting his neck, and hypnotizing himself. Seeing that he was sweating in the mirror, he quickly poured some water from a mineral water bottle and washed his dirty face and the sweat on it. He looked around, confirmed that he didn’t look too embarrassed, and then gulped down the remaining water in the bottle.

Just as he had cleaned himself up, Cao Xinrong, the other man who had teamed up with him and luckily escaped, walked in with water, looking lost and out of his mind, as if he had been scared out of his wits. The whole person seemed sluggish yet extremely vigilant.

He even ignored Han Lin, who was looking at him in the mirror and raised his hand to greet him casually.

But Han Lin didn’t care. He didn’t want to get too close to others right now, because he couldn’t let anyone know about his injury. Thinking of this, he subconsciously reached back to touch the injured area, but immediately stopped and quickly retracted his hand, scolding himself for being forgetful. Then, to give Cao Xinrong some space, he left the bathroom.

Since the beginning of the rescue operation, Yao Jinglin and Lin Xiang had had several experiences dealing with zombies, but they still hadn’t been able to fully understand the types and habits of zombies.

Even ordinary zombies, because of their different lifestyles and occupational habits before turning into zombies, would have different manifestations after the mutation. But overall, even if ordinary people mutated into zombies, they still posed little threat to living survivors, unless they were surrounded by a large group of ordinary zombies. Otherwise, even if they encountered a few scattered zombies, ordinary survivors would have a chance of winning as long as they dared to fight back.

Just like the main rescue force that set out later encountered a collection of ordinary zombies. Although the number and scale were astonishing, as long as there was enough ammunition and time, they could be dealt with.

What they feared was encountering the kind of mutated zombie that almost wiped out Yao Jinglin’s entire rescue company.

Although there were not many of those zombies, they were much more difficult to deal with than hundreds or thousands of ordinary zombies. It was very much like the feeling of ordinary mobs and level BOSSES encountered in general monster-fighting games. Even if there was only a slight difference in body size, there was a qualitative difference in attack power.

And the four-person team that went out to search for supplies this time encountered agile zombies that Yao Jinglin and Lin Xiang had never encountered before. Their speed was not only faster than ordinary zombies, but even faster than normal people like them.

Even though those who were sent out to perform search missions were those with the best overall qualities such as physical strength, endurance, and speed among all the survivors, they still failed to escape from the hands of those two mutated zombies.

According to Han Lin and Cao Xinrong, if the other two hadn’t sacrificed themselves at the cost of their lives, using all their strength to entangle those two mutated zombies, they would never have had the chance to retreat completely.

Yao Jinglin knew that without weapons in hand, wanting to deal with those two mutated zombies was simply wishful thinking, but she still wanted to understand the special characteristics of those creatures. Only after understanding the situation could she formulate countermeasures. So she led Lin Xiang, while concealing their presence, followed the route of Han Lin and others towards the location of the mutated zombies.

She didn’t intend to get close, just wanted to observe from a distance, and then go back to discuss the next plan with everyone. But what she didn’t expect was that while she and Lin Xiang were observing the mutated zombies, someone was also following behind them, observing them with a playful smile on his lips.
