Chapter 7 I Will Make It Up To You.

Before leaving, Lin Yi specifically went to the restroom.

He stood in front of the mirror, adjusted the fringe of hair on his forehead a few times, and then winked at the flawless handsome face reflected back.

    “Tsk.”

What am I doing? It’s not like I, a handsome guy, haven’t been naturally beautiful for a day or two… I need to figure out a way to create more physical contact later… I must win him over today!

The moment he stepped out of the restroom, he ran straight into the one person he absolutely did not want to see right now.

“Lin Yi?” Li Rui looked surprised. “Why are you here? Did Zexuan invite you to dinner too?”

“Zhang Zexuan?” Lin Yi had a bad feeling. “Is he here too?”

“Yep!” Li Rui nodded, shaking his phone. “He said he needed to talk to me about something, and we’re at the restaurant on the fifth floor. Since we ran into each other, why don’t you join us?”

“Ah…” Lin Yi quickly waved his hands, instinctively glancing toward the lounge area. It was the busiest time, and he couldn’t spot Shen Beidao in the crowd. “Li Rui, I have something else to do… something really urgent.”

Li Rui took it as a joke, grabbed his arm, and started walking forward. “It won’t take long for one meal. Zexuan is treating us today; it’s rare for him to be so generous.”

Lin Yi stumbled, dragged along, cursing the thick, boundary-less friendship he shared with his childhood friends.

He was half-dragged toward the elevator by Li Rui.

At this moment, Shen Beidao stood in front of the transparent glass curtain wall in the upper-level lounge area, his gaze inadvertently sweeping over the bustling crowd below.

His sight fixed on a certain spot.

That bright figure wearing a cartoon hoodie was being affectionately pulled forward by his most promising student.

Li Rui wore a brilliant smile, occasionally turning his head to chat and laugh with Lin Yi. Although Lin Yi looked slightly hesitant, he didn’t pull away.

The two walked one after the other, their posture natural, looking like extremely close friends.

Shen Beidao tightened his grip on the mineral water bottle slightly.

He watched Li Rui’s hand rest naturally on Lin Yi’s shoulder, watched the tips of Lin Yi’s hair lift as he slightly tilted his head, and watched the kind of unspoken rapport between the two that allowed no outsiders…

The glass reflected his calm, unperturbed profile, only the light in his eyes behind the lenses sinking slightly.

He subconsciously took half a step forward, the sole of his shoe making a faint tap against the polished marble floor.

    The sound startled him.

He stopped, pressing that inexplicable restlessness back into his heart without a change in expression, leaving only the faint water droplets on the mineral water bottle silently dampening his fingertips.

Just then, his phone rang. Caller ID: Li Rui.

“Professor Shen!” Li Rui’s voice on the other end was cheerful. “I was just about to tell you I’m leaving the museum. I couldn’t find you in Zone F just now, so I’m calling to let you know.”

“Mhm.” Shen Beidao’s voice betrayed no emotion, his gaze still fixed on the two figures pulling at each other not far away.

Li Rui wanted to exchange a few more pleasantries but found the call had already been hung up. He scratched the back of his head, feeling confused.

Lin Yi didn’t know where Li Rui, who was just over 1.7 meters tall, got such strength, but he couldn’t shake off his arm.

During the moment Li Rui looked at his phone, Lin Yi planted his feet like roots, stopping in place. “Li Rui, wait a minute.”

    “What is it?”

“Actually, I… I had an appointment with a friend just now,” Lin Yi explained casually. “I need to go tell him.”

“No problem,” Li Rui smiled, his eyes behind the round glasses curving into crescents. “If it’s your classmate, just ask him to come along.”

“No way!” Lin Yi immediately refused, his voice rising several degrees, causing passersby to look over.

He quickly lowered his voice. “I… I’m not that familiar with him yet. If I suddenly drag him to a gathering, he definitely won’t go.”

In reality, he had already pictured Zhang Zexuan’s irritating mouth at the dinner table, asking Shen Beidao all sorts of nosy, unrestrained questions.

Given Shen Beidao’s quiet nature, being entangled by a chatterbox and gossip magnet like Zhang Zexuan would definitely leave Shen Beidao with an extremely poor first impression.

However, if he ran into Li Rui and didn’t go, Zhang Zexuan, with his penchant for stirring up trouble, would definitely label him as “Turning one’s elbow outward” the next time they met, and he’d be nagged about it for half a year.

Caught between a rock and a hard place, Lin Yi thought for a moment before saying, “How about this: tell me the restaurant name. I’ll go explain to my friend first, and then I’ll come find you guys.”

As he spoke, he pushed Li Rui hard, turning around and quickly walking toward the other direction leading to the lounge area.

Lin Yi waved his hand behind him without looking back, then sprinted the mere two hundred meters to the lounge area.

Li Rui looked at the phone that had suddenly hung up, then at Lin Yi, feeling that something was strange today.

Lin Yi appeared before Shen Beidao, slightly out of breath with fine sweat on his forehead. Shen Beidao was quietly standing by the massive glass curtain wall, looking out at the city view.

The setting sun’s afterglow plated his tall silhouette with a soft golden edge. The expensive velvet suit displayed a different, profound texture under the natural light.

“Shen Beidao, I… I…” Lin Yi panted, unsure how to start.

Shen Beidao turned around at the sound, his gaze calmly resting on Lin Yi’s face, which was flushed from running. “Something else came up?”

“…Yeah.” Lin Yi lowered his head guiltily, staring at his sneakers. “I just… ran into two friends. They’re my childhood friends, and they insisted on having dinner with me.”

“Can you not go?” Shen Beidao’s voice remained steady, showing no emotion.

“I can’t…” Lin Yi screamed internally: I don’t want to go either! Who wants to eat with them? I only want to go on a date with you!

Shen Beidao watched him silently, not responding immediately.

He simply took half a step forward without changing his expression. His tall figure cast a long shadow under the light, completely enveloping Lin Yi.

“You promised me,” he lowered his eyes, his gaze sweeping over Lin Yi’s slightly trembling eyelashes, his voice deep and even. “Breaking a promise is not a good habit.”

That voice made Lin Yi’s ears burn. He blurted out almost instinctively, “Then how about? You come with me?”

His fingertips curled unconsciously: Oh no, what am I saying? Shen Beidao, please don’t agree, please don’t agree…

A faint ripple crossed Shen Beidao’s eyes.

Naturally, he couldn’t go with him; with Li Rui present, too many things would become complicated.

But the invitation itself subtly pleased him.

He deliberately paused for a moment, leaned in slightly, stopping at a perfect distance. His voice was soft yet clear as he said, “But what I look forward to is a date that belongs only to the two of us.”

Something invisible gently floated across Lin Yi’s heart, warming his entire being, a cozy warmth mixed with uneasy guilt.

Lin Yi: “I didn’t plan well. How about tomorrow…”

“Today’s business should be finished today.” Shen Beidao interrupted him, acting exceptionally understanding, even generous. “I can wait for you.”

    Lin Yi felt touched. “…”

Shen Beidao: “We still have to wait for roadside assistance later. Take your time eating; no need to rush.”

The more considerate he was, the more guilty Lin Yi felt. He was like a little rabbit caught in a gentle net, ears perked up to stay alert, yet all his anxiety was smoothed away by that perfect tenderness.

The little rabbit had clearly made a mistake, but this seemingly steady human not only didn’t bare his fangs but gently gathered him into a warm embrace, using delicate patience to soothe every piece of fluff that wanted to stand on end.

“Okay, I… I’ll eat quickly.” Lin Yi said, reluctantly turning around and walking toward the elevator, looking back every few steps.

However, after only a few steps, the sour, guilty feeling in his heart nearly overflowed.

He suddenly stopped, as if having made a decision, spun around, and ran back toward the figure still standing in place.

Before Shen Beidao could react, Lin Yi opened his arms and rushed toward him.

He had originally envisioned a dashing hug, ideally pulling Shen Beidao into his arms to show off his super boyfriend strength!

When he actually lunged forward, he truly realized the difference between them.

Shen Beidao’s tall, strong physique forced him to stand on his tiptoes. The planned boyfriend-strength hug turned into an intimate posture of lightly wrapping his arms around the other man’s neck.

But even this made his heart race.

The moment he hooked onto the other man, Shen Beidao seemed to instinctively lean down slightly to accommodate him.

This subtle movement forced Lin Yi’s nose to brush past Shen Beidao’s nose bridge, their warm breaths silently mingling in the close proximity.

They were close enough to see their own small reflections in the other’s dark pupils.

Lin Yi’s gaze involuntarily drifted downward, landing on the tantalizingly close thin lips. His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.

An indescribable, ambiguous atmosphere instantly filled the space. Lin Yi could smell the faint lingering scent of tobacco on Shen Beidao. The warm touch of the skin on his neck, where his fingers rested, enveloped their intertwined breaths in this small space.

Lin Yi’s cheeks flushed rapidly at a visible speed, but he forced himself to remain calm, whispering softly at extremely close range with a tone that mixed pleading and assurance:

“I’ll be quick… Wait for me obediently.”

He paused, then added, “I… I’ll find a way to make it up to you.”

Shen Beidao’s deep gaze fixed on the Peach Blossom Eyes so close to him, noting the shimmering moisture and helpless shyness within them.

His Adam’s apple moved. One hand subconsciously wanted to lift and wrap around the slender yet resilient waist.

However, just a second before his fingertips touched the fabric of the hoodie, Lin Yi suddenly let go like a startled rabbit, jumping back half a step.

The hug came suddenly and ended just as abruptly.

Lin Yi felt that if he hugged him any longer, he might faint from tachycardia.

He gave Shen Beidao a look mixed with apology and slight panic, turned around again, and ran toward the elevator, his retreating figure suggesting a hasty escape.

Shen Beidao slowly lowered the hand that had frozen mid-air. His fingertips seemed to still feel the slight itch where the other man’s hair had brushed past.

He stood rooted to the spot, feeling the sudden disappearance of warmth and weight from his embrace, and the lingering scent of Lin Yi in the air.

A corner of his usually expressionless mouth lifted slightly. A faint but genuine sweetness quietly melted the indifference in his eyes.

Just then, his phone vibrated in his pocket.

He took it out and saw a WeChat message from Lin Yi.

    WeChat contact name changed:

Lin Yi changed to Little Rabbit

    Little Rabbit [Transfer 1314.00]

Little Rabbit [Animated Sticker: A rabbit with drooping ears, kneeling on the ground, holding a sign that reads “Wife, I was wrong,” looking pleadingly at the screen]

Shen Beidao looked at the unexplained transfer and the sticker… then thought of the hurried, spontaneous hug and Lin Yi’s promise to “make it up” to him…

He shook his head helplessly, the smile on his lips deepening slightly. He muttered to himself, “So he likes this…”

He put away his phone and walked toward the elevator.

Since Lin Yi was gone, there was no need to continue the roadside assistance charade. He opened the app and remotely unlocked his car.

Looking at the string of car keys on the passenger seat, he stared at them for a moment before picking them up and examining them closely. He suddenly noticed that the cold keys possessed a specific scent.

He opened an infrequently used app on his phone.

In the search bar, he typed: How do men date men

The page jumped. The first result was a popular post marked [hot], with a highly inflammatory title:

Must Read Before Dating a Guy! One Minute Guide to the Unspoken Rules of Gay Dating, Especially the Last One—You’ll Regret It Forever If You Don’t Read

Shen Beidao clicked on the post. The content started simply and crudely:

Step One: Figure out if you’re the Top or the Bottom!

Roughly, there are a few situations: If you are on top pressing him down, you are the Top (1). If you are on the bottom being pressed down, you are the Bottom (0). If you alternate positions, you are Versatile (0.5)…

Shen Beidao patiently skimmed through the post, which was full of internet slang and exaggerated descriptions. Then, in the comment section below, he carefully typed his question:

Help: A male friend I just met bought me boba tea. After leaving temporarily due to an emergency, he transferred me 1314 yuan and sent a sticker calling me “Wife.” How should I assign the roles of 1, 0, or 0.5 in this situation?

The hot post lived up to its name; all the users who saw it were active, and replies came immediately:

[1st Floor] 1314? And calling you “Wife”? Isn’t this obvious?

    [2nd Floor] A scheming 1.

[3rd Floor] He’s already planned the position, and you’re still debating the meaning of the numbers.

[4th Floor] Am I the only one who noticed the words “just met”? Calling you “Wife” and transferring 1314 after just meeting… Is he a player? Be careful not to get played (though he’s generous).

[5th Floor] Suggest sending back 250 to see his reaction.

OP: Thank you all. Update: He is eight years younger than me, an art student. He hugged me spontaneously when we parted and said he would make it up to me.

[6th Floor] Make it up? How? Where? Elaborate (Ears perked up)

[7th Floor] Blind guess his next line is: “Uncle, I don’t want to work hard anymore.”

[8th Floor] Eight years difference? Four more years and it’ll be a full cycle. This is quite explosive in the dating world…

[9th Floor] Need follow-up! I want to see how he makes it up!

[10th Floor] Could the “make it up” he mentioned be… (Automatically censored)

[11th Floor] He’s clearly trying to reel you in! OP, wake up!

[12th Floor] Seriously? Art students play this hard?

[13th Floor] OP, don’t fall too hard! This is a high-level game.

[14th Floor] Em… hard to judge. Different fields, different perspectives. There’s a wall between 1 and 0 thinking.

[15th Floor] Suggest OP downloads the Anti-Fraud App.

[16th Floor] OP, are you playing a very new kind of nurturing play?

[17th Floor] A good chef can make a meal out of one sentence.

Shen Beidao rubbed his temples, feeling a headache from the diverse and even contradictory replies.

The complexity of the online world seemed no less than the ancient German document he was currently researching.

Meanwhile, Lin Yi found the restaurant named Lü Cha Restaurant on the fifth floor, based on the information Li Rui had sent.

A uniformed waiter smiled and led him to a private room at the very back.

Lin Yi pushed the door open, saying in as casual a tone as possible, “Who’s treating today, being so generous? You even booked a private…”

His voice stopped abruptly when he saw who was sitting inside the room.

Around the round table, besides Zhang Zexuan, who was grinning mischievably, sat someone he absolutely hadn’t expected to be there: Xie Chun.

Zhang Zexuan saw Lin Yi and jumped out of his chair as if he had seen a ghost. “Lin Yi! How did you find this place?!”

Glancing around, the ill-intentioned Intern from before was also sitting next to Xie Chun.
