Chapter 97: His Highness Received This Beating at the Right Time
Several young maids gathered in the inner corridor, whispering to each other, while Ju Su changed Gong Xunwu’s dressing and watched Ye Yueshen’s expression.
The wound on his back was horrifying, but Gong Xunwu didn’t make a sound, answering Ju Su’s question of “Are there any other injuries?” with a normal expression, and casually comforting Ye Yueshen, “I’m fine, it doesn’t really hurt.”
Judging from his expression, it was indeed difficult to detect any pain, but Ye Yueshen, with his eyes fixed on him, still caught the moment he frowned. Ju Su was eager to help, deliberately exaggerating his movements, and by the way, selling his miserable state: “It can’t compare to the injuries Your Highness suffered when guarding the border. Does Your Highness want to take another trip to the gates of hell?”
Ye Yueshen couldn’t help but say, “Be gentle, I know it hurts him a lot, you don’t need to deliberately torture his wound anymore.”
Ju Su choked, secretly trying to make Gong Xunwu look pitiful was one thing, but being exposed face to face was another. He suddenly became a little afraid of Gong Xunwu’s retaliation, so he shut his mouth and said nothing.
Ye Yueshen opened the door and went out, saying to the little maids who turned to look at him, “You don’t need to serve, go play.”
The little maids hesitated, whispering that they didn’t often slack off. In the end, Yin Jian was the most quick-witted, clearing her throat and saying, “Qi Wang is still considered an outsider, so let’s not make trouble.”
Ye Yueshen watched them leave, leaning against the door in a daze. He didn’t want to see the wound on Gong Xunwu’s body; it felt like his heart had been poked by chopsticks.
“Third Brother.”
Ye Yueshen looked back, Ye Lingshen was helping the Junzhu up the steps. Ye Yueshen walked over and called out “Mother.”
The Junzhu was furious: “It’s all his ploy to gain sympathy, you don’t need to feel embarrassed to chase him away.”
Ye Lingshen knew the situation had changed when he saw Ye Yueshen’s expression, so he didn’t say the supportive words he had prepared, and instead, he advised the Junzhu, reverting to his long-lost carefree demeanor: “Mother, it’s true that Qi Wang was beaten. Didn’t eldest brother report it? Even a kid would cry after getting a beating.”
Ye Yueshen was tearful, looking at Ye Lingshen with nostalgia, reminded of the days when he limped and wandered in the mountains near the estate because of him.
“Don’t look at how scheming Qi Wang is, I think most of it is just him pretending…” Ye Lingshen pretended to lower his voice: “I don’t think he’s much smarter than a child, making it easier for our Third Brother to handle.”
The Junzhu glared at him: “You just spout nonsense as soon as you open your mouth. I don’t want a man who’s all about life and death. Pretending is as quick as changing faces. If you think he’s easy to handle, why don’t you go to Qi Wang’s manor and become a male concubine?”
Ye Lingshen gritted his teeth and sneered: “Mother, you’re being too biased. I won’t try to persuade you anymore, it’s just asking for trouble.”
“Mother.” Ye Yueshen spoke hesitantly, tentatively taking the Junzhu’s hand: “Mother, I have plans in my heart.”
“You have no plans whatsoever.” Ye Lingshen couldn’t help but interrupt, mocking him before remembering that he was supposed to be helping Ye Yueshen, not undermining him, so he quickly tried to smooth things over: “But he’s more than enough to deal with Qi Wang.”
These were all ambiguous words. In fact, the Ye family had seen Gong Xunwu’s deepness, and no one would take these words seriously.
The Junzhu reached out and poked Ye Yueshen’s forehead: “Ah, I can see it now, you won’t be satisfied until you suffer some losses.”
Ye Yueshen was stunned, asking in disbelief: “Mother, does this mean you agree?”
“What else can I do if I don’t agree? You’re a stubborn child. If you elope with him, where will I, with my old bones, go to find you?” The Junzhu pretended to glare at him, but there were actually tears in her eyes.
Ye Yueshen hugged the Junzhu, saying softly, “Mother, it’s not to the point where I’m willing to elope with him, it’s just giving him…a reward…giving him an opportunity.”
After three changes of wording, he finally made the Junzhu laugh. Although she heard him say that, seeing how excited he was, she knew that she really couldn’t dissuade him from this matter, so she could only sigh.
Not long after, Ju Su came out carrying the medicine box. The Junzhu told the two brothers to see him off. Ju Su declined a few times, feeling a lot of pressure as he was seen out by the two young masters.
Ye Lingshen acted like a playboy: “Imperial Physician Ju’s medical skills are superb and his legs are fast too. From the Imperial Hospital to the Ye family, he didn’t delay at all.”
Ju Su was sweating profusely, quickly clarifying: “Don’t say that, Young Master Ling, don’t wrong me. I was dragged here by Yan Kui, almost carried on his shoulders. I really didn’t know His Highness would be assassinated. This wasn’t His Highness’s ploy to gain sympathy, one beating is enough.”
Ye Yueshen tugged at Ye Lingshen’s sleeve, signaling him not to scare Ju Su anymore.
In the bedroom, Gong Xunwu was lying on the pillow, contentedly sniffing Ye Yueshen’s soft pillow. There was a refreshing citrus fragrance. Gong Xunwu buried his face in the pillow, closing his eyes and feeling that the fragrance was very soothing.
The door was pushed open. He looked back to find Ye Yueshen, but it was the Junzhu.
The Junzhu didn’t bother with pleasantries either, sitting down at the head of the bed, completely ignoring him as she looked down and patted her skirt, then coldly scrutinizing him: “Your Highness received this beating at the right time.”
Gong Xunwu slowly got up, pulling the quilt to cover the blood-stained hem of his robe, and respectfully nodded in greeting: “Junzhu, I didn’t resort to unscrupulous means. Those Miao people really weren’t arranged by me. If I utter a half-truth, then…”
“Alright.” The Junzhu frowned and interrupted him: “Stop saying unlucky things, don’t implicate Xiao Yue.”
Gong Xunwu lowered his head, looking somewhat docile. The Junzhu wanted to yell at him, telling him to stop pretending, but his expression seemed especially sincere, obediently saying, “Yes.”
“My Yue’er won’t suffer the hardship of being an imperial concubine, let him go to the palace during festivals to be tormented by your imperial sisters-in-law, don’t even think about it.” The Junzhu glared coldly at Gong Xunwu, meaning she wanted him to state his position.
Gong Xunwu replied, “That won’t happen. If he doesn’t want to, no rules can force him to enter the palace. I know he’s not the type to feign courtesy with others. During festivals, I’ll take him back to the Marquis’s mansion.”
“My Yue’er is going back to his own home, why do you need to take him?” The Junzhu couldn’t hold back her dissatisfaction, every word seeming to be worth getting angry about.
Gong Xunwu didn’t get angry at all, backing down and saying, “If the Junzhu is really worried, it’s fine for me to move into the Marquis’s mansion too.”
“No need.” The Junzhu felt that seeing him ruined her appetite, she would get sick from anger soon. The Junzhu sighed, “My son is thin-skinned, he’ll be embarrassed even under my nose. In Qi Wang’s manor, with just the two of you, he can be more at ease.”
Gong Xunwu flattered, “The Junzhu is thoughtful and her love for her son moves me.”
“My Yue’er is always Gongzi Yue, don’t take it upon yourself to request the title of Wangfei or anything like that. You two live your lives behind closed doors, I don’t want him to become the talk of the capital.” The Junzhu finished speaking and stood up.
“Yes, I’ve remembered everything.” Gong Xunwu looked agreeable. The Junzhu left after speaking, not lingering any longer.
Not long after, Ye Yueshen came in tearfully, wiping his tears outside the beaded curtain for a while before coming in to ask Gong Xunwu, “Why are you sitting up?”
“I was talking to your mother, it would be impolite to be lying down.” Gong Xunwu looked at his red eyes, asking with concern, “Did your mother scold you?”
Ye Yueshen shook his head, then sobbed again, “Just now, my second brother was joking with me, and I just felt…like I had regained something…I’m happy.”
“I’m happy too.” Gong Xunwu looked at him, his eyes gentle without a trace of hostility: “I’ve also regained something.”
Ye Yueshen ignored his words, going to the washroom to take a bath. When he came back, he was holding a basin of warm water, looking at Gong Xunwu with a slightly helpless expression as he wet the towel: “I’ll wipe you down…”
Gong Xunwu almost felt flattered, but he was embarrassed to have Ye Yueshen serve him: “I’m not really dirty, the beating was through the clothes, it’s just a little blood…”
“Then at least wipe off the blood…” Ye Yueshen looked at his bloodiness, afraid that he would be frightened if he woke up in the middle of the night and saw him.
Gong Xunwu relied on his will to endure the restlessness he felt when Ye Yueshen touched him. Ye Yueshen carefully helped him wipe off the blood stains on his skin, then carried the basin out.
When he came back, Gong Xunwu had already made room for him on the inside of the bed: “You sleep on the inside.”
“I’m actually very well-behaved when I sleep,” Ye Yueshen said, “I won’t fall out of bed.”
“I’m afraid you’ll run away.” Gong Xunwu quickly glanced at Ye Yueshen after saying that. Ye Yueshen didn’t say anything else, kicking off his shoes and getting into bed.
He covered himself with the quilt, facing away from Gong Xunwu. The two were silent, neither of them sleeping. After a long time, Ye Yueshen couldn’t stand the awkwardness and took the initiative to speak: “Is it okay for you to lie down? Don’t you need to lie on your stomach?”
“I’m fine.” Gong Xunwu replied as soon as he finished speaking, his tone calm but also hard to hide his eagerness.
Just as Ye Yueshen was about to fall asleep, he felt Gong Xunwu hug him from behind. Ye Yueshen turned around to face him.
Gong Xunwu was stunned, he thought Ye Yueshen was already asleep.
