Chapter 90: Meeting in Zhe Rong’s Room

Gong Shengyin, as expected, received a heavy slap. Gong Xunwu’s broad palm struck his ear, and he quickly felt tinnitus.

But he didn’t back down or admit his mistake, as if the recent changes in the imperial court had given him great confidence. He licked the blood from his lips, straightened up, and faced Gong Xunwu.

Ye Yueshen had opened his eyelids when the loud slap rang out, and he heard Gong Shengyin speak, refusing to admit defeat.

“Meeting in Zhe Rong’s room.” Gong Shengyin seemed to smile. “How coincidental, Imperial Uncle.”

A disgusting emotion welled up in Ye Yueshen’s heart. It wasn’t difficult to hear the contempt and mockery in Gong Shengyin’s words directed at him.

What followed was the second slap Gong Xunwu delivered.

Gong Xunwu was annoyed by Gong Shengyin’s disrespect towards Ye Yueshen.

But he couldn’t help but feel lucky and pleased. Gong Shengyin really didn’t know how to get close to Ye Yueshen, making mistakes at every turn. Having such an opponent almost made Gong Xunwu want to laugh.

Gong Shengyin’s smirking, provocative expression finally disappeared. He looked at Gong Xunwu with a venomous gaze, and after a moment, he twitched the corner of his mouth. “Imperial Uncle is teaching his nephew a lesson, and the nephew should naturally accept it, but I wonder what the nephew did wrong?”

Letting Liu Qingying trick Ye Yueshen into confinement, and then breaking in late at night and refusing to leave – just these two things were enough for Gong Xunwu to want to throw him into prison and give him a good beating. Yet Gong Shengyin could shamelessly ask what he had done wrong.

“If you don’t leave now, I’ll make you understand that living is a mistake,” Gong Xunwu threatened openly.

Gong Shengyin pondered for a moment, and before leaving, he didn’t forget to disgust Gong Xunwu, saying, “Imperial Uncle, Father Emperor and the Empress Dowager have already chosen the Qi Wang Concubine, and I expect an imperial decree to bestow the marriage soon. Nephew congratulates you in advance.”

After Gong Shengyin left, there was no more sound. Ye Yueshen blinked, not saying anything or moving.

He didn’t think Gong Xunwu would obediently accept the imperial marriage, but he easily conjured up images of red satin and firecracker ash on the wedding day.

Before long, the door opened and closed again, and someone left. Ye Yueshen urged Ye He, “Hurry up and sleep, don’t wake me up later.”

Someone sat down by the bed, their movements very light and steady. Ye Yueshen turned his head and, unsurprisingly, saw Gong Xunwu’s face.

Gong Xunwu seemed to have seized a rare opportunity, shamelessly lying down next to Ye Yueshen. Ye Yueshen was too sleepy, so he didn’t move, and softly told him to leave, “Get out.”

“You told me to sleep quickly, you can’t go back on your word.” Gong Xunwu moved closer to Ye Yueshen, and presumptuously reached out to hug him.

Ye Yueshen heard the rustling of fabric as he raised his arm, so before his arm landed on him, he opened his eyes and glared at Gong Xunwu, wanting to force him to back down.

Gong Xunwu’s arm remained in place, neither falling nor retracting, as if by holding the position long enough, Ye Yueshen would compromise.

Ye Yueshen’s gaze shifted from Gong Xunwu’s face down to his collarbone and chest, revealed by the movement. Two small wounds where the blood had just congealed appeared in Ye Yueshen’s field of vision.

This kind of wound triggered a sense of familiarity in Ye Yueshen, making him feel very uncomfortable, caught between remembering and not remembering. After a few seconds, Ye Yueshen suddenly understood. He yanked open Gong Xunwu’s outer robe.

Sure enough, there was a similar wound about an inch apart. Ye Yueshen frowned and glared at him, “What’s the difference between you and that idiot Gong Shengyin?”

Gong Xunwu had actually imitated that Nanzhao man by hanging roses on his skin. Ye Yueshen was almost driven mad with anger. He simply couldn’t understand what these people were thinking.

Gong Xunwu explained, “Seeing that you didn’t like it, I already took them off.”

Ye Yueshen sat up and saw a small pile of bright red roses discarded by the door.

Ye Yueshen rubbed his temples in a headache. Gong Xunwu immediately latched onto him like a ghost, his fingers seizing the right to massage his temples. “Let me help you.”

“Can you not…” Ye Yueshen was helpless. “I just want to sleep.” His voice unconsciously carried a hint of grievance.

Gong Xunwu immediately released his hand, but he didn’t leave. He lay down first, and then carefully looked at Ye Yueshen, worried that Ye Yueshen would get out of bed and leave.

But Ye Yueshen only lowered his head and was silent for a while, then lay down and turned his back to him.

Ye Yueshen woke up countless times throughout the night, but then he would fall asleep again in a daze. Finally, he nestled himself into an embrace, and the rest of the night was particularly peaceful.

When he opened his eyes in the morning, Gong Xunwu was looking at him, and the fingers that were gently stroking his cheek also froze.

Ye Yueshen didn’t bother with it, turned over, broke free of his embrace, and then closed his eyes, wanting to go back to sleep.

Gong Xunwu thought he was sulking, so he took the initiative to speak, “Yesterday, news came back that the barbarians have been driven out of the Great Qi territory. Our dynasty’s soldiers took advantage of the victory to pursue and captured two cities. The barbarians have already sent envoys to the capital to seek peace, and I expect they will return to the capital soon.”

Ye Yueshen opened his eyes, feeling unhappy about being chased away from his sleep.

“A person Gong Shengyin secretly cultivated has made a contribution. He is now considered…” Gong Xunwu didn’t continue. He realized that mentioning disgusting people early in the morning wasn’t a smart thing to do.

Ye Yueshen looked back at him, his eyes were watery and hazy from just waking up, and his cheeks were rosy because of the warm quilt, so beautiful that it made people’s hearts flutter.

Gong Xunwu’s pretense of being a good person for so many days finally broke down. He couldn’t wait to kiss Ye Yueshen. Ye Yueshen was startled and immediately climbed up to run, but was easily pinned down.

“It’s easier to change rivers and mountains than to alter one’s nature. Gong Xunwu, you’re just this kind of scoundrel who won’t change,” Ye Yueshen mocked him.

So Gong Xunwu stopped moving, but he didn’t release the person in his arms. He lowered his head and buried his face in Ye Yueshen’s collarbone, as if pleading, “Please forgive me.”

“How unreasonable. I want you to spare me,” Ye Yueshen couldn’t even struggle his arms free, and his face was flushed red. “What are you going crazy about so early in the morning?”

Gong Xunwu hugged him, evading answering for a while, “Liu Qingying’s father was seriously injured, barely clinging to life. His older brother is missing, and his younger brother broke a leg.”

Ye Yueshen became quiet, and after a moment, he said, “I’m not curious.”
