Chapter 1 She and the Rebellious Disciple Transmigrated into a Book

A Hai University Foreign Languages Institute classroom.

Chun Yu, standing at the podium, wore her hair in a low ponytail. She had on a white blouse and a pair of faded denim jeans. She was quite slender, and the blouse was slightly too large. This most affordable of outfits didn’t look quite so ordinary due to her inherent temperament.

She wore a pair of outdated black-rimmed glasses, which forcefully knocked her original eight-out-of-ten looks down to a five.

“School starts summer vacation this afternoon. Have all the students booked their tickets?”

    “We’ve booked them already.”

Chun Yu nodded. “Everyone, please rest safely whether you’re taking the train or the plane. Don’t be forgetful, watch over your belongings, and pack up properly this afternoon. If you need the teacher’s help with anything, contact me anytime.”

Chun Yu held a stack of forms and raised her hand toward the student sitting in the front row. “Class Monitor, come pass out the Departure Roster for everyone to fill out.”

After speaking, she scanned the back row of the classroom.

Chun Yu sighed helplessly. That student hadn’t shown up again.

Li Yuan, a student who made her feel utterly powerless.

Throughout the entire freshman year, the number of times the two of them—teacher and disciple—had met could be counted on one hand. Yet, even without attending, she never missed a beat on her assessment scores. One reason was that the Principal was her biological uncle. Another reason was that Chun Yu heard Li Yuan seemed to have some kind of mental illness, and her inability to attend school was due to her sickness.

Chun Yu was actually skeptical of the second reason, because in the few times she had met Li Yuan, aside from her somewhat cold attitude, she was polite, and her speech and behavior were perfectly normal. She really didn’t seem sick.

However, if she wasn’t sick, it didn’t make sense either. Everyone said Li Yuan only attended A Hai University, where she had a relative as Principal, because she needed to stay in the country for treatment. After all, given the Li family’s resources, she could have easily studied abroad and obtained a more impressive degree. This was indeed a very realistic problem.

    Realistic… speaking of reality…

Chun Yu had already scheduled her two-month vacation to be completely full.

Not for fun, of course, but for continued work. She planned to go home for a week to see her mother, younger brother, and younger sister, and then contact an agency to work as a tutor to supplement the household income.

Her mother was a nurse, and her father was a driver. Although the family wasn’t rich, they had enough to eat and drink. But in her senior year of high school, her father had an affair, abandoned her mother and three children, and ran off abroad with his mistress, never to be heard from again.

She was devastated at the time and failed her college entrance exams. She could have gotten into a better university, but she knew she didn’t have the chance to retake the exams.

Over the years, her mother had to pay for her schooling and raise three children, leaving her almost no free time. Her body broke down from overwork, and before she turned sixty, she could barely leave the house without a wheelchair.

Her younger brother and sister were also nearing college age, which would mean another significant expense. She couldn’t afford to slack off.

But thinking that in a few years her younger siblings would also be able to work, and she could relax a bit then, Chun Yu felt a renewed sense of hope for life.

Chun Yu was tidying up her things in the Staff Dormitory when she heard a knock on the door. She looked up and saw the person outside, immediately smiling brightly.

“Principal Chen, you haven’t left school yet? You must be working so hard. Please come in and sit.”

Director Chen had a corpulent body. He was under forty, and the top of his head was already bald and shiny.

Not only was the man bald, but his teeth were also poor. His large yellow teeth jutted out ridiculously far from his face, and his chin and neck merged together, making him look exactly like that bald, green-faced Kappa from the internet meme.

Being ugly was one thing—it was natural and unavoidable—but being flirtatious and greasy was simply intolerable. He had already been divorced three times.

When Chun Yu first arrived at the school as a Teaching Assistant, he had harassed her. Fortunately, she was clever and managed to get evidence by playing along, which allowed her to successfully transition to a permanent position later.

However, getting her the permanent position seemed to be part of the ugly man’s plan. Her transition was just the beginning of her torment, as he constantly piled thankless and difficult tasks onto her. This forced Chun Yu to start showing weakness and flattering him.

Chun Yu inwardly wiped a tear: There’s no choice. Poor laborers do everything for a living.

Chen Zhong sat down without ceremony, grabbed an apple Chun Yu had left on the table, and started crunching into it. Juice sprayed everywhere from his leaky teeth, looking utterly disgusting.

“I can’t help it. Do you think I, as a Vice Principal, just hold meetings for you all? There are endless matters to deal with.”

When Chun Yu heard this, her smile immediately froze on her face. Oh no, he was here to assign her more work. He really treated her like a free slave. No, Chun Yu decided. At worst, she would confront him again. She was a tenured teacher now; he couldn’t just fire her.

Chen Zhong said, “It’s summer vacation now, isn’t it? The school has a bunch of buildings waiting to be repaired. We’re just waiting for the students to leave before starting construction.”

“Then Principal Chen must take care of his health. Oh dear, am I delaying you? I’ll hurry up and pack my things so I don’t waste your time.” Chun Yu avoided engaging with his topic.

If Chun Yu was a fox, Chen Zhong was the Black Mountain Old Demon.

He put down the apple. “No rush, Teacher Chun. Let’s chat. If I remember correctly, you’ve been a Lecturer for four years now, haven’t you?”

Chun Yu clenched her back teeth. Four years indeed! Others could apply for Associate Professor after two years as a Lecturer, and four years was enough to apply for Professor. Only she was still a Lecturer after four years!

Thinking of this, Chun Yu wanted nothing more than to beat up this fat slob. Her application for Associate Professor being rejected must have been due to his interference!

Chen Zhong watched the change in Chun Yu’s expression and sneered inwardly. People from poor backgrounds had no fallback, making them easy to manipulate. No matter how virtuous or strong-willed they were, they still had to bow their heads for a living.

“As your leader, I must remind you, Teacher Chun, that you can’t just think about leaving school once the vacation starts. To become an Associate Professor, you need not only genuine academic ability but also to contribute to the school.”

Chun Yu could only force a fake smile. “I must ask Principal Chen for guidance…”

Chen Zhong shook his head, casually spitting the apple core from his mouth onto the table. It rolled around on Chun Yu’s pale yellow, small cherry-patterned desk mat, coated in foul-smelling saliva. That mat was ruined.

“I have to remind you of everything. Ah, forget it. I’ll just tell you. I haven’t told anyone else; I’m only guiding you because I pity you. When you become an Associate Professor and get a raise, you must treat me to a meal.”

Chun Yu quickly nodded. “Of course, of course.”

“During the summer vacation, the school needs people to oversee many projects, right? Just bear with it for a month. Once the projects are finished, you’ll still have a month to go home, won’t you? I guarantee I will recommend you to the school this year.”

He saw Chun Yu hesitating. In truth, Chun Yu was doubting his credibility.

Chen Zhong said, “This isn’t a mandatory task, mind you. If you don’t want to, forget it.”

Chen Zhong stood up, preparing to leave.

“Fine, I’ll stay at school,” Chun Yu said.

This month of staying at school was purely unpaid labor. Not only would she receive no salary, but she would also have to work from dawn till dusk, cycling across the entire A Hai campus to check the progress of various construction projects.

Under the scorching sun, Chun Yu rode her gray-yellow old bicycle from the east side of the campus to the west to inspect.

Suddenly, the old bicycle stopped. Chun Yu put one foot down, feeling like everything in front of her was pixelated.

Chun Yu thought she must be suffering from heatstroke. She felt like she was shouting loudly, but she couldn’t make any sound at all.

With a “thud,” she and the bicycle crashed to the ground.

After an unknown amount of time in the darkness, Chun Yu heard the sound of an ambulance and emergency rescue efforts…

But when she laboriously opened her eyes, she found herself not in a hospital room, but in the wilderness.

“What’s going on? Was I kidnapped?” Chun Yu looked around blankly.

    “No, you transmigrated.”

    “Who’s speaking?”

Hearing the other voice, Chun Yu immediately stood up and covered her body.

But she looked around and saw no one.

“Teacher Chun, have we been apart for so long that you can’t even recognize my voice?”

Chun Yu carefully tried to distinguish the cold voice, but she still couldn’t see anyone.

“You… are you Li Yuan?” Chun Yu asked tentatively.

The voice let out a breath, sounding relieved. “At least you haven’t forgotten.”

Chun Yu said, “Where are you? Why can’t I see you? Am I blind?”

Li Yuan was too lazy to answer her third question, couldn’t answer her second question, and could only answer her first. “I’m right next to you, on your right.”

Chun Yu felt around in the air but touched nothing. Suddenly, she noticed a small, withered wild sour jujube tree on her right.

She squatted down, reached out, and pinched the small, dry thorn. “How did you transmigrate into a tree? And such a malnourished one? How about your teacher takes a leak to give you some nutrients?”

Li Yuan was so angry she wanted to kick her butt. If she really were that jujube tree, she would be furious, but she was only a soul and couldn’t touch anything. Even she didn’t know why.

Li Yuan suppressed her anger and said, “There’s a small river over there. Go to the riverbank.”

“How did you know your teacher was thirsty? That’s so thoughtful.” Chun Yu said, walking toward the riverbank.

As soon as she crouched down by the river, the water flowed gently, and a reflection appeared on her right side.

The girl had a thin, melon-seed face, a pair of dark, bright eyes, and long black hair draped over her shoulders. She wore a plain, cotton-linen long dress and looked at her coldly.

“Li Yuan?” Chun Yu glanced to her right again. There was still nothing beside her.

But Li Yuan’s reflection was clearly in the river water.

“How can this be? This defies physics! What kind of world have we transmigrated into?”

Li Yuan also didn’t know why Chun Yu had a body while she did not.

Li Yuan said, “While you were unconscious, I looked around the area.”

She pointed to another mountain. “I found a large palace beyond that mountain. The plaque on the palace reads Vast Brilliance Immortal Sect. There are many people coming and going from the palace, all wearing the same ancient clothing. Your clothes are the same as theirs.”

Chun Yu looked down and realized she was wearing a white Hanfu embroidered with runes, a golden hair ribbon tied in her hair, styled in an ancient updo.

“Then it seems I must have some connection to this Vast Brilliance Immortal Sect… Wait! I actually transmigrated as a soul!”

Didn’t that mean she was dead in the modern world?

Chun Yu then realized that although the reflection in the river looked nine-tenths like her, there were subtle differences.

The good news was that she seemed to have transmigrated into a cultivation world, backed by a major sect, and even her severe nearsightedness had been cured.

The bad news was that her modern self was dead.

Chun Yu mourned for herself for a moment, then looked on the bright side. “I died while on the job, so the school should compensate me a lot of money. That way, Mom will have money for treatment, and my brother and sister will have money for school. Thinking of it that way, it’s not so bad.”

But she was still very sad.

Li Yuan said faintly, “I had billions in assets waiting for me to inherit. I can’t believe I transmigrated to this wretched place… That Vast Brilliance Immortal Sect… it sounds a little familiar.”

“What! You had billions in assets and died just like me! Hahahahahaha!”

Chun Yu really didn’t want to laugh, but if that were true, Li Yuan seemed even more miserable than her, and Chun Yu immediately stopped feeling so sad.
