Extra Chapter Two (Wolf and Rabbit)

    ========================

A strangely funny extra chapter about the wolf and the rabbit

Lian Sheng was a snow-white rabbit who loved to preen. He enjoyed fresh grass and carrots. One day, he played too far away, couldn’t find his parents, and had to survive on his own.

But he was too weak. He hadn’t learned any skills, couldn’t find fresh green grass or water sources. When he was little, he stayed in the burrow his parents dug for him and hadn’t seen many natural predators. Even if he did, he couldn’t run fast enough.

Fortunately, he met other rabbits in this mountain area: gray rabbits, black rabbits, brown rabbits, spotted rabbits, and rabbits the same color as himself.

However, none of those rabbits were as handsome as him. When the other rabbits saw such a beautiful companion, they immediately welcomed him warmly. But he still hadn’t learned any skills. He couldn’t help his companions keep watch, couldn’t find food, and couldn’t even dig a proper burrow—it always collapsed. He relied on his companions for daily survival.

Soon, even though he was very pretty, some rabbits in the warren couldn’t stand him anymore and wanted to drive him away.

“Hey! Don’t you dare regret this! If it weren’t for me last time, how would you have found such a good burrow location?” Lian Sheng puffed up angrily and scurried out of the hole. His long ears drooped down, and he shook off the yellow dirt clinging to his fur.

Lian Sheng had actually stumbled upon this burrow location by accident. His companions quickly made a home there, but no rabbit gave Lian Sheng credit for it.

Lian Sheng fiercely munched on the grass near their nest for several bites, almost eating it bare, filling his belly before leaving the area.

The sun gradually set, and the cool wind whistled.

Lian Sheng was exhausted from climbing the mountain. Everything around him was utterly unfamiliar. He had to find shelter tonight. It would be best if he could find an abandoned burrow left by other rabbits. If not, he would have to dig one himself.

But… if he dug a burrow himself, his snow-white fur would get covered in dust. He would have to spend a long time grooming, and if he didn’t groom well, he wouldn’t be handsome anymore.

He could endure sleeping without digging a burrow in this weather, but what if a nasty bird came and plucked his fur to build a nest? What would he do then?

It was the first time he felt useless.

Because he was so sad, he was completely unaware that a fierce beast was quietly approaching him.

    It was a wolf.

Zhou Lingchun had been watching this rabbit nearby for a while. He had caught a wild deer that afternoon to fill his stomach. After eating his fill, he was napping with his eyes closed in a hidden spot, only to find a rabbit shouting and making a fuss here.

It would be a simple matter of one bite, but Zhou Lingchun was full and didn’t even consider eating a scrawny rabbit like Lian Sheng as a snack.

But the rabbit wouldn’t stop being so noisy. Zhou Lingchun’s eyes flashed menacingly. He raised a paw and approached silently.

He opened his massive, bloody maw!

“Ah! What a big dog!” Lian Sheng cried out in surprise when he saw the beast, more than three times his size, suddenly rush toward him.

Lian Sheng had never seen a wolf before, but he had seen dogs, so he thought this was a large dog that had run up from the foot of the mountain.

Zhou Lingchun froze in shock, staring fiercely at this rabbit who didn’t know its place.

Lian Sheng shivered slightly, frightened by Zhou Lingchun’s expression, but he quickly jumped up, his two eyes glowing with admiration.

He walked halfway around the wolf.

This big dog was too cool! Even in the dim light, its fur was thick, black, and shiny. Look at those powerful four paws, look at those green eyes, look at those sharp teeth!

How could a dog be so handsome! How did he maintain his fur?

“Hey, brother, you are so handsome!” Lian Sheng praised without reservation.

Zhou Lingchun growled, “I am a wolf!”

“What? A wolf?!” Lian Sheng’s eyes instantly widened, his ears perked up, and he hopped back half a step.

“Now scram!” Zhou Lingchun said, showing great mercy to this beautiful but clueless rabbit.

The rabbit’s black pupils spun twice.

Instead of running, Lian Sheng suddenly flopped down onto Zhou Lingchun’s paw and said, “Big Wolf Brother! Please don’t eat me. I don’t have any good meat on me, only my fur is pretty. Eating me will get stuck in your teeth.”

Zhou Lingchun impatiently bared his sharp fangs. He lifted his paw, flipping the little white rabbit Lian Sheng head over heels, who then tumbled onto the ground. “Then get lost!”

“Wuu… I won’t get lost. Big Wolf Brother, were you also abandoned by your companions? It’s getting dark soon. Why are you all alone?”

    Zhou Lingchun fell silent.

He was right. He was the Wolf King’s son, and they had been betrayed.

Seeing Zhou Lingchun fall silent, Lian Sheng knew he had a chance. He continued to lie on Zhou Lingchun’s paw. “Don’t be sad. I was abandoned by my companions too. How about this: let’s be friends! I will never betray you!”

Lian Sheng’s little brain was working quickly: This wolf is a good wolf. Those rabbits look down on me. If they see me befriending a wolf later, won’t they all have to call me Big Brother? Besides… this wolf’s fur is so thick. If I follow this wolf, sleeping will be much softer.

Zhou Lingchun lowered his head, squinting down at the little rabbit lying on his foot.

Lian Sheng looked up, his two pink ears standing straight up, the tips brushing the wolf’s chin. His two eyes were wide and round, and his little paws gently massaged the wolf’s paw.

It was as if he was saying: Please agree, please agree. How can you bear to refuse a rabbit like me?

Zhou Lingchun felt a stirring in his heart. He had never had a friend before. But he still said in a deep voice, “Wolves and rabbits cannot be friends. Aren’t you afraid I’ll eat you?”

“No! You are my friend, so why would you eat me?” Lian Sheng quickly said. “From now on, you protect me, and I’ll protect you!”

Zhou Lingchun lifted his paw, gently nudging Lian Sheng away, then turned and started walking toward where the moon was about to rise.

Lian Sheng let out a “Wuu” sound, his ears drooping. He uselessly shed two tears, knowing the wolf had definitely rejected him.

Unexpectedly, the big wolf ahead turned his head, his lowered tail flicking impatiently. “Why are you crying again? Hurry up and follow! Didn’t I agree?”

“Huh?” Lian Sheng stared blankly, his mouth agape, his tears not yet finished falling. He looked utterly pitiful. “I… I can’t walk. You hurt my foot.”

Zhou Lingchun turned around, opened his mouth, and gently but firmly bit Lian Sheng’s neck with his sharp teeth. He silently held the rabbit in his mouth and walked in a certain direction.

Lian Sheng struggled with his legs between the wolf’s teeth. “Bite lighter, bite lighter! My fur is going to have marks on it.” Zhou Lingchun loosened his grip a bit, wondering why Lian Sheng was making such a fuss. But Lian Sheng immediately made a new request. “Hey, brother, don’t let your tongue be so long. It’s licking my ear.”

The entire journey was filled with Lian Sheng’s voice.

A squirrel in a tree saw this and was so surprised that the pinecone in its paw dropped to the ground: The wolf didn’t eat the rabbit in one bite!

After an unknown amount of time, Zhou Lingchun let go. Lian Sheng sat down hard on a cold, hard stone. He vigorously shook his wet head. His ear accidentally hit the wolf’s front leg. Before he could speak, he heard Zhou Lingchun say, “We’ll rest here tonight.”

Lian Sheng looked around. He didn’t know how the wolf had walked so fast. They were almost at the highest point of the mountain, surrounded by dark thickets, with a full moon hanging in the sky.

Zhou Lingchun looked down and said, “If you don’t want to be eaten by other wolves while you’re with me, you need to sleep somewhere hidden.”

“But it’s too cold. I’ll freeze to death,” Lian Sheng said.

Zhou Lingchun ignored him, lay down on the smooth, large rock, and closed his eyes.

Under the moonlight, the wolf’s entire body shone, appearing even darker than the dense night, his powerful physique fully revealed.

Lian Sheng had no choice but to climb onto the wolf’s belly. It was surprisingly soft there. He rubbed his face against the wolf’s abdomen and said, “Can you lie on your side? I can’t lie completely on you like this.”

Zhou Lingchun slightly opened his eyes and shifted his body sideways a little.

Lian Sheng then contentedly lay on the wolf’s belly, one white rabbit foot stretched out comfortably in the air. The heat source continuously radiated warmth, making it more comfortable than his own rabbit nest.

    Lian Sheng: Wow, big doggy!

Zhou Lingchun: I am a wolf!

    Lian Sheng: Big doggy!

“…” Zhou Lingchun silently lay down in front of Lian Sheng.
