Chapter 13: Not Fond of Pampered Drama Queens

I don’t have an appointment, Shen Li said honestly. That’s why I’m waiting for you to come down.

Gu Yunzhao raised an eyebrow. And what if I didn’t come down?

Shen Li replied, I’d go home and sleep.

Fair enough. Hearing his answer, Gu Yunzhao didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Why the sudden visit? Did you run into some trouble?

No. Shen Li pulled out a lunchbox to show him. I came to bring you lunch. I made it myself. He emphasized the last part.

The blue lunchbox had three layers. As he opened them one by one, they revealed the dishes Shen Li had just made in the kitchen while following video tutorials and talking on the phone.

Tamagoyaki, teriyaki chicken wings, braised prawns, and lettuce in oyster sauce were presented one after another. However, Shen Li’s hand, which had been proudly displaying the food, froze when he opened the final layer. Where was the rice? Why was there no rice in the lunchbox?

No wonder he felt like something was missing when he left the house. Shen Li finally realized what he had forgotten.

Bringing a meal without the rice—what kind of delivery was this? Shen Li felt a wave of regret, but he forced himself to keep a straight face.

Actually, I intentionally didn’t bring rice. I packed more side dishes instead because, you know, fat loss. It’s for weight loss. And they say eating too many carbs causes a carb coma, and I didn’t want it to affect your work this afternoon. Uh, also, it’s just, well… Shen Li swallowed hard and began to make things up with a forced smile. Because he felt guilty, his thick, long eyelashes fluttered incessantly.

He grabbed whatever terms he had seen online to give himself a grand and reasonable excuse for the missing rice.

Gu Yunzhao naturally saw through his guilt. He leaned against the desk with his arms crossed and listened to Shen Li continue his fabricated explanation.

Seeing his expression, Shen Li knew his explanation had utterly failed. Feeling both ashamed and annoyed, he didn’t even bother to close the lunchbox. He leaned over the front desk, reaching out to cover Gu Yunzhao’s face. Stop laughing! Stop laughing!

Shen Li practically lunged into his arms. The hem of his short-sleeved shirt caught on the desk, revealing a section of his fair, slender waist as he twisted his body and stretched out a pale arm. A faint flush of embarrassment colored his beautiful face, and his rosy lips moved as he shouted for the other man to stop mocking him.

Alright, alright, I’ll stop laughing. Gu Yunzhao reached out to catch Shen Li, preventing him from losing his balance and falling. He knew when to stop teasing; Shen Li was clearly on the verge of getting angry. If he pushed any further, he would actually have to coax him back. So, he suppressed his smile and helped Shen Li stand steadily on the ground before letting go.

Special Assistant Chen, Gu Yunzhao turned his head and instructed, take the food and bring it upstairs.

After saying that, he placed a hand on Shen Li’s shoulder. Let’s go to my office.

Okay. Shen Li didn’t forget to grab his lunchbox.

Special Assistant Chen’s food arrived very quickly. Shen Li hadn’t been sitting on the sofa for long when there was a knock on the office door.

President Gu. Special Assistant Chen brought in the takeout bags and set them out. Everything has been delivered.

Wow, that was fast. Shen Li poked his head over to look at the dishes in the containers. They looked, smelled, and tasted perfect—clearly the work of a professional chef. In comparison, the bento he had made looked somewhat pathetic. The food came out so fast; it must be pre-made, Shen Li said sourly.

No, it’s not. Special Assistant Chen rubbed his head in confusion but didn’t forget to explain, President Gu eats from this restaurant often. He always calls ahead to have them start preparing so he doesn’t waste time waiting.

Damn it. Why was he being kicked while he was down? Did they have to force him to admit his cooking wasn’t as good as the takeout?

Ahem. Gu Yunzhao coughed from behind his desk, timely interrupting the awkward conversation. Alright, you go ahead and have your lunch now.

    Yes, sir.

Once everyone else had left, Shen Li remained silent, his lips pouted. Gu Yunzhao walked around the desk to look at him. Are you sulking?

No. Shen Li was still feeling disgruntled. He felt like his gesture of bringing lunch had been overshadowed by the takeout. If he had known, he wouldn’t have come. Not only did he fail to establish his virtuous persona, but he had also been completely outclassed. Seeing Gu Yunzhao walk over, he simply turned his head away, refusing to look at him.

Really? Gu Yunzhao leaned down to meet his eyes and gave his cheek a playful squeeze with a smile. Then why is someone’s face puffed up like a steamed bun?

I said I’m not. Even with his face in someone else’s hand, Shen Li remained stubborn, refusing to admit it.

After all, the reason for his annoyance sounded too petty. But Shen Li thought to himself, I am exactly that petty!

Since he was a child, he had a stubborn streak of competitiveness. If he saw someone doing something better, he had to learn it and compete; if he couldn’t win, he would sulk.

Being competitive wasn’t a bad thing, but Shen Li’s mindset had reached an extreme. However, throughout his life, no one had ever guided him toward a healthier path. Now that his personality was formed, it was impossible to change.

Gu Yunzhao’s gaze swept from the takeout containers to the lunchbox. Recalling the conversation between Special Assistant Chen and Shen Li, he roughly understood the reason.

How long did it take little Shen Li to cook these? He intentionally made a swallowing motion. It looks delicious. I wanted to try it when we were downstairs. If I didn’t have to maintain my image in front of the employees, I wouldn’t have even waited to come upstairs.

Really? Shen Li looked at him skeptically. Although he knew his cooking couldn’t compare to a restaurant chef’s and that Gu Yunzhao was likely just coaxing him, it didn’t stop his mood from improving. After all, who doesn’t like being pampered?

Of course it’s true. Gu Yunzhao spoke while observing his expression. Seeing that he was clearly cheering up, he continued, Did Xiao Li cook often at home before? I feel like this is at a level where you could open a restaurant.

It’s just average. Gege, stop teasing me. Shen Li was clearly susceptible to this treatment. A smile appeared on his face as he quickly uncovered the lunchbox again. Gege, hurry and try my braised prawns. This is my specialty. Everyone who’s eaten it before said it was good.

It seemed he was successfully coaxed. Gu Yunzhao felt a sense of relief. Shen Li only acted spoiled and called him Gege when he was happy. The change in address clearly meant his mood had improved. Dealing with a political marriage alliance where the spouse was so young… he almost wanted to sigh.

While his expression remained gentle, Gu Yunzhao was internally weighing whether or not to send Shen Li back. A young spouse was certainly beautiful in a unique way, but he had too many little tantrums. Unfortunately, Gu Yunzhao didn’t actually like this kind of pampered drama queen personality.

Gege, try it, try it. Shen Li had no idea what the man in front of him was thinking. He was expectantly peeling a prawn and stuffing it into Gu Yunzhao’s mouth, not forgetting to praise himself. I spent the whole morning on this.

Forget it, he thought as he chewed the prawn. He really is too beautiful. For the sake of that face, he would endure it for a while longer.

After the meal, Gu Yunzhao stacked the takeout containers and threw them in the trash.

There’s a lounge inside. If you’re tired, you can go in and sleep for a bit.

Can’t I stay out here? Shen Li blinked. I want to watch Gege work.

In CEO novels, the female lead should show her admiration for the president at the right time. Acting weak is the best way to handle someone. Shen Li felt the time was right.

    Can I? Please?

Watch then. Gu Yunzhao looked through the documents on his desk, giving instructions without looking up. Go to the lounge if you get tired later. If you’re bored, you can ask Special Assistant Chen to take you for a walk. I’ll take you home when I get off work tonight.

    Okay!

At first, Shen Li really did want to observe seriously and then offer some praise to build favorability.

Gu Yunzhao was tall with long legs, and his black suit was impeccably tailored. When he was working, the gentle, coaxing smile was gone, replaced by a serious and intimidatingly professional expression.

    But it was too boring.

Shen Li rolled from one end of the sofa to the other. It was so boring!

Gege, he looked up pitifully. Can I play games? He raised his hand as if making a promise. I definitely won’t shout or affect your work.

Gu Yunzhao was looking at a file and didn’t even lift his eyelids. Go ahead.

Shen Li was quite quiet at first. Aside from the occasional tapping on the screen, the empty office only contained the sound of paper flipping or the mouse clicking as reports were checked.

However… Honor of Kings is not a game that allows for emotional stability. When one gets heated while caring about a teammate’s family situation, it’s impossible to control one’s actions and voice.

Consequently, every employee who came to report for work that afternoon saw a little beauty sitting on the boss’s sofa, so beautiful that he was hard to forget.

And this little beauty was facing his phone, very thoughtfully inquiring about his teammates’ physical health and the well-being of their parents.

Special Assistant Chen. The marketing manager, who had just finished reporting and stepped out the door, couldn’t help but poke Special Assistant Chen at the door. Who is that inside?

Special Assistant Chen replied, Who do you think it is?

The marketing manager said, I think… could it be the Madam?

Their President Gu had always been a smiling Yama, but today he was unusually gentle during the reports. Even when an employee made a mistake, he didn’t scold them and just told them to redo it. He couldn’t think of any reason for this other than maintaining an image in front of his spouse.

He is whoever you think he is. Special Assistant Chen didn’t deny or confirm it. He just gave him a nudge. Hurry up and go down to finish your spreadsheets.

Got it, got it. The marketing manager felt he had found the truth. He gave an OK gesture and hummed a little tune as he went downstairs.

He left behind a bewildered Special Assistant Chen, who had no idea what the man had gotten. He asked who it was, but how was Chen supposed to know who was inside?

Meanwhile, the marketing manager took Special Assistant Chen’s ambiguous attitude as a subtle confirmation that was simply inconvenient to state explicitly for some reason. He thought it over, and Shen Li’s youthful face on the sofa flashed through his mind again.

Oh man, no wonder Special Assistant Chen couldn’t say it clearly. In the marketing department’s office area, a nearby colleague saw their manager suddenly clap his hands as if he had deciphered some heavenly secret and couldn’t help but lean in.

By the time the marketing manager snapped out of it, he realized he was surrounded by a circle of people, all waiting for him to reveal the big secret.

His eyes darted around, and he mysteriously whispered what he had seen and heard upstairs.

In an instant, the office area was filled with one holy crap after another.

By the time Special Assistant Chen checked the work group chat after finishing work that evening, there were already hundreds of messages claiming that the reason their President Gu had stayed away from women all these years was that his preference was actually beautiful boys aged fifteen or sixteen.

And so, the misunderstanding and rumors began.
