    Chapter 6

“Let’s go, I’ll take you home.”

After the banquet ended, Pei Qingyan naturally took her hand and led her toward the garage. Before leaving, she didn’t forget to hand her the coat she had been holding for a long time.

“Thank you,” Xu Zhiyi said softly.

The soft wool not only blocked out the gusts of cold wind but also evoked long-buried memories deep in her mind.

Pei Qingyan was one of the very few people who knew she couldn’t handle cold drafts. Because below her ribs, there was a half-finger-long scar left by a surgical accident at birth. Whenever it got cold, it would ache all night.

This secret, even her biological parents didn’t know—or rather, they had selectively forgotten it.

The reason Pei Qingyan was able to share this not-so-glamorous secret with her was due to their inseparable childhood years.

If one had to pinpoint it, it was likely during their games of “house,” where they always played a loving couple. Even if they weren’t assigned those roles, Pei Qingyan would use both carrots and sticks to swap with other children—she always had to stand by her side.

One hot summer afternoon, Pei Qingyan suddenly pulled her aside mysteriously and righteously demanded they take a bath together.

“My parents can bathe together! Why can’t we?” she argued with her twisted logic, leaving Xu Zhiyi stunned. In the end, she somehow dizzily agreed to the request.

It was also then that the other girl caught sight of the scar on her body.

Xu Zhiyi still remembered the girl telling her seriously that she would study medicine when she grew up so she could help remove the scar that had troubled her for so long…

    Click.

The sound of the car door opening rang out. Xu Zhiyi looked somewhat dazed at the woman opening the door for her, her lips curving slightly as she whispered “thank you” again.

What she had never told the other was that since that day, whenever the scar flared up due to drastic weather changes, the first image that appeared in her mind was Pei Qingyan’s firm, bright eyes.

Like a specific medicine for her, slowly, her body didn’t seem to hurt as much.

“Between us, there’s no need to be so formal.”

Pei Qingyan turned her head while driving, her dark, bright eyes as always reflecting only her.

Her heart ached for no reason. Xu Zhiyi softly replied “okay” and hurriedly turned to look out the window, actually avoiding the other’s gaze.

The car was silent for a moment.

“What time do you go to work tomorrow?”

“Seven-thirty… I can just take a car there myself.”

Xu Zhiyi heard the underlying meaning and tactfully refused.

Surprisingly, the woman didn’t press the issue. Her lips were pressed thin, looking a bit serious. After a long while, she finally spoke:

    “Then what about after work?”

“No need to pick me up. If President Pei has time, we can have dinner nearby together.” Xu Zhiyi really couldn’t bear to reject her twice, so she chose a middle ground.

Of course, she knew the most likely scenario was Pei Qingyan picking her up and dropping her off, and they would still have dinner together.

—But there was nothing she could do; she just couldn’t harden her heart to draw a clear line with her. She couldn’t do it before, and she couldn’t do it now.

Whenever Pei Qingyan dejectedly met a closed door with her, she couldn’t help but soften her heart and secretly open a window, letting the wolf into the house.

Thinking of this, Xu Zhiyi couldn’t help but sigh, feeling she was reaping what she sowed.

So many years had passed, why hadn’t she made any progress at all?

As she was about to get out of the car, she intended to return the coat.

“It was bought for you in the first place.” Pei Qingyan waved her hand and draped it over her again without allowing any argument. “The dress is too thin, and you…”

She paused, skillfully skipping over the topic that might cause unpleasantness.

Walking to the stairwell, Xu Zhiyi couldn’t help but look back. The woman stood quietly in front of the car lights, her silhouette lonely.

She didn’t dare look any longer and hurriedly lowered her head to send a message: I’m inside, you should head back soon too.

    “Okay, see you tomorrow morning.”

The other’s reply was consistently concise.

If it were the Pei Qingyan from six years ago, she would often pester her to go upstairs together and find an excuse to stay until the next morning. But the current Pei Qingyan… she couldn’t guess.

In the middle of the night, while she was half-asleep, the sound of the engine finally faded away quietly.

Xu Zhiyi closed her eyes, letting her eyes fill with moisture.
