    Chapter 17

    Which day?

The woman let out a soft chuckle, her fingertips hooking a strand of her hair and stroking it tenderly.

The night my engagement was broken. Xu Zhiyi turned over, missing the fleeting smile that flickered in the other woman’s eyes.

Perhaps the darkness gave her courage, or perhaps it was because she couldn’t see the face that made her heart race. Clutching the corner of the blanket, the words she had buried deep in her heart for so long spilled out uncontrollably.

I think… I’ve already grown used to having you by my side.

Habit was a difficult thing to break once it took hold. Because her past was saturated with Pei Qingyan’s shadow, Xu Zhiyi had found it incredibly difficult to adapt during the six years she was away.

The unfamiliar environment, complex social circles, and snobbish mentors—one problem followed another. She suddenly realized just how well Pei Qingyan had protected her, never allowing those frustrations to come anywhere near her.

In that moment, she couldn’t tell how much of the fluttering in her heart was attraction and how much was gratitude.

As long as you need me, I will always be here. The woman pinched the tip of her ear, her voice soft and tender, just as it had always been.

—She was gentle only to her.

Xu Zhiyi’s nose prickled, and an indescribable lump formed in her throat. Just as she was about to burst into tears, the woman suddenly leaned down and captured her lips.

Scorching air surged into her mouth along with the woman’s tongue. Xu Zhiyi felt like ice cream left out in the sweltering summer heat, melting into a puddle as she was pulled into the woman’s embrace.

    She didn’t dislike it.

Pei Qingyan’s embrace was warm—so comfortable that she almost forgot the other woman was unhurriedly teasing the sensitive root of her tongue, like an experienced hunter toying with her prey.

The soft, wet sounds of their kiss were particularly suggestive in the dim room.

Their tongues tangled once more, leaving her body tingling and numb. The tears in Xu Zhiyi’s eyes fell uncontrollably, her mind spinning as even her breath was stolen away.

    Why are you crying?

The way she licked away the tear tracks was incredibly intimate. With her cheeks burning, Xu Zhiyi stared blankly at the woman, listening as she continued to speculate, Does it feel bad?

    N-no.

She hurriedly averted her eyes, trying to dodge the woman’s gaze. But a moment later, she felt that soft sensation on her lips again. The woman gave her another kiss, like a stamp of ownership, determined to leave her own scent behind.

If it’s too difficult for you to accept me right away, how about we try being lovers first?

Pei Qingyan pulled back slightly. Her usually cold, sharp phoenix eyes were now filled with caution and a faint, almost imperceptible hint of pleading.

    Okay.

Seeing her like this, Xu Zhiyi’s heart softened, and she nodded instinctively.

She had never seen Pei Qingyan act so humble before. For a moment, a strange sense of self-reproach took over.

I was… supposed to become your legal wife anyway.

She bit her lip and whispered, So, don’t overthink it.

My wife is so good to me. Taking the opening, Pei Qingyan called her wife again, her voice trailing off with undisguised joy, like a child who had just been given candy.

Xu Zhiyi couldn’t help but smile, though a slight ache tugged at her heart.

She wondered if she had shown too little care for the other woman in the past. Otherwise, why would such a small gesture make this usually composed woman so excited? Even if they were just friends, it shouldn’t be like this.

What time do you get off work tomorrow?

Xu Zhiyi lowered her gaze, using her long hair to hide her flushed ears as she struggled to keep her voice steady.

I have a few meetings tomorrow, so I’m not sure about the time. Even as she spoke, Pei Qingyan was tempted to call her secretary immediately to rearrange her schedule.

However, before she could act, Xu Zhiyi’s soft voice struck her heart like a drumbeat.

I could bring you dinner… Your stomach isn’t in great shape to begin with. If you don’t eat on time when you’re busy, your condition will only get worse.
