    Chapter 15

    The atmosphere suddenly became subtle.

Xu Zhiyi gazed at the woman who was inches away. The elegant scent of sandalwood and those shimmering thin lips tugged at her heartstrings, leaving her speechless for a moment.

At the same time, a trace of inexplicable bitterness lingered in her heart.

She rarely saw Pei Qingyan lower her posture like this. Having grown accustomed to the other’s dominance, she was suddenly a bit unaccustomed to this change.

The flame of sensibility burned a small hole through her rationality.

    “…Of course.”

Xu Zhiyi softly uttered those two words and leaned forward, her lips brushing against the other’s like a dragonfly skimming the water before pulling away.

She had kissed the corner of the woman’s mouth.

It was devoid of any desire, so light and casual it was as if nothing had happened at all.

Yet Pei Qingyan made no effort to hide the surprise in her eyes, her intense emotions surging like a tide.

    “Don’t speak.”

Before the other could say anything, Xu Zhiyi felt her face heating up. Belatedly, she felt annoyed by her impulsive behavior.

If she hadn’t been dazed for that second, she never would have…

The sound of a chair scraping against the floor came from beside her.

She snapped back to her senses and realized the woman had already cleared the bowls and taken them to the kitchen.

Listening to the sound of running water, she couldn’t help but rub her warm cheeks.

“Just friends”—she didn’t even believe those words herself. However, she always subconsciously resisted taking another step forward.

    10:00 PM.

Xu Zhiyi dried her hair, finished replying to her students’ questions, and turned off her phone, setting it aside.

Work at the Research Institute could be considered leisurely, but it could also become incredibly busy if one wanted to. It all depended on whether one wanted a quick promotion.

Before getting pregnant, Xu Zhiyi had intended to give it her all. After all, no one could predict if she would eventually choose to return to the family under various pressures. At the very least, she didn’t want to leave too many regrets during the limited time she had control over.

Catching a glimpse of the warm honey water on the table, she hesitated for a moment before picking up a cup and walking toward the closed study.

    Knock, knock, knock!

The door was quickly pulled open. The woman’s lips were pressed tight, but her expression softened the moment she saw her.

“Am I disturbing you?” Xu Zhiyi’s first instinct was to apologize, but in the next second, she was pulled inside without a word.

“You’re not. Is this for me?”

Pei Qingyan unceremoniously took the steaming water and downed it in one go. Then, she shut down her computer with efficient, decisive movements. “Let’s go to sleep.”

    “Your work—”

“It’s nothing urgent. I can finish it tomorrow.”

Without quite understanding how she got there, Xu Zhiyi followed the woman to the bedroom and found her a bathrobe and toiletries. Of course, during this process, Pei Qingyan appeared even more familiar with the place than she was; she must have visited many times over the last six years.

Click. The main light was switched off, leaving the desk lamp to cast a soft glow.

The sound of water pattering in the bathroom eventually made Xu Zhiyi feel a bit drowsy.

By the time the woman’s soft body pressed against her from behind, she was already in a half-asleep state.

She could feel the other person grasping her hand, quietly interlacing their fingers. At the same time, steady, long breaths brushed against the side of her neck, feeling slightly itchy.

    “I’m so happy.”

The woman’s muffled murmur drifted into her ear. Xu Zhiyi clearly felt a familiar heat rising to her face. Fortunately, it was dark, so the other couldn’t see, sparing her from embarrassment.

“If the company is busy, you don’t have to make time to come over every day,” she whispered.

“How could work be more important than my wife?”

The woman’s voice was laced with a smile, as if she knew exactly what Xu Zhiyi was worried about. Her tone rose with a hint of delight. “You don’t need to feel burdened. I’m doing this entirely of my own free will.”

    “…”

Xu Zhiyi ultimately didn’t pursue the topic further. She knew that once this woman made up her mind, not even a team of oxen could pull her back.

As she lay in Pei Qingyan’s arms, her thoughts uncontrollably drifted back to that night six years ago.
