    Chapter 11

After returning home, Xu Zhiyi habitually scanned her work group and found that the research group had recommended a student’s WeChat to her.

She sent the friend request without hesitation. Her gaze lingered on her contact list for a moment before her fingertip tapped the screen, sending a “Goodnight” to Pei Qingyan.

Regardless, today’s dinner had gone well enough.

She felt once again that the other woman was different from six years ago. She was more patient, more calculating, and more cunning. Most importantly, she knew exactly how to act without annoying her.

Unconsciously, Xu Zhiyi began scrolling up through their chat history.

When she went abroad, she had uninstalled WeChat and deleted almost everyone’s contact information.

Many people eventually gave up after failing to reach her, but only Pei Qingyan would send her a message every so often. They weren’t long—just a few words, like a work report explaining her recent situation. At the end, she would always add a sentence asking how she was doing.

She never gave up, even without a reply.

In a daze, Xu Zhiyi felt as if a spice tray had been overturned in her heart. Bitterness, sourness… all sorts of flavors mixed together, making it hard for her to distinguish between them.

Suddenly, her peripheral vision caught a “I’m sorry.” Her eyes dimmed, and a string in her mind seemed to snap with a pop.

Further up were long paragraphs of apologies, spanning over a month.

    That period of time—

Xu Zhiyi suddenly recalled the night her engagement was broken. It was also summer, with a bright moon and the chirping of cicadas. The evening breeze carried a gentle warmth; everything had seemed just right.

She had been wearing her wedding banquet dress. The hem was slightly wrinkled and stained with wine and dirt, but she had no heart to care for it.

By the time her fiancé eloped with his mistress, the noise of the scene had already overwhelmed her. What’s more, the mistress was a man.

The farce ended with the fiancé’s parents coming out to apologize, but Xu Zhiyi knew this was only the beginning.

Less than half an hour after the banquet ended, the words “Wealthy Family Scandal” had quietly climbed the trending searches, followed by a slew of eye-catching subheadings, each more sensational than the last. There were even photos from the wedding scene—a classic love triangle.

And she, knowing nothing, had been pushed to the center of the storm.

“Classmates I haven’t contacted in forever are all asking me what happened…” She leaned on Pei Qingyan’s shoulder, her voice fragile and terrified. “My parents think it’s because I didn’t keep a close enough eye on Jiang Huaian that this scene played out, bringing shame to the family… What should I do, A-Yan?”

“It’s okay, just leave it to me.”

The woman’s embrace was as reassuring as ever. “Tomorrow, I will propose a new solution to your parents.”

“A new solution? What is it?”

Xu Zhiyi looked up, her red-rimmed eyes meeting the woman’s dark, deep gaze.

“You’ll know by tomorrow.” Pei Qingyan remained as calm and indifferent as ever, gently wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes.

    “Alright.”

Out of trust for her friend, Xu Zhiyi didn’t ask more. Instead, she pointed to a row of drinks on the table. “You have to drink with me today. Let’s not stop until we’re drunk.”

As soon as she said it, she remembered the other woman’s stomach issues and quickly changed her tune. “Never mind. Just help me to bed when I get drunk.”

    Everything seemed perfectly arranged.

But Xu Zhiyi didn’t know if the alcohol content of the wine she chose was too high or if today had drained all her strength, but just half a bottle was enough to make her head spin.

Her chest felt even more stifled and uncomfortable.

As a child who hadn’t been loved by her parents since she was young, she desperately wanted them to notice her. So, even though she didn’t love Jiang Huaian, she had still gritted her teeth and agreed to the engagement.

And now, what hurt her most was her parents’ cold and disgusted expressions. Even though she had done nothing wrong…

In her daze, she felt Pei Qingyan pick her up.

The elegant fragrance was soft and pleasant.

“Don’t marry him. Marry me instead.”

The woman tore open her dress.
