Chapter Index

Deep footsteps sank into the ground, the earth giving way so that the ankle and below were completely submerged.

Bai Chendeng’s eyes were vacant and lost, moving only mechanically.

Suddenly, one set of footsteps ceased, replaced by the sound of large areas of golden grass leaves being crushed. Who had fallen?

Bai Chendeng remained outwardly calm, focusing all his attention on sensing the spiritual object within the soil.

    “Shu-la-la—”

    A second person fell.

    A third person fell.

A fourth, a fifth… two people fell simultaneously: Sang Qiwei and Shen Lezhi.

At this moment, only Bai Chendeng remained standing.

He could feel the thing beneath the soil relaxing its guard, having approached to a distance of less than two meters beneath his feet.

    Closer…

    Closer!

Bai Chendeng’s steps faltered, and he instantly lost his balance, tumbling to the ground. He was about to fall into this patch of brilliant golden flowers!

Simultaneously, the thing beneath his feet emitted a silent shriek within the gold-threaded soil, celebrating its huge harvest, and instantly rushed to the ground directly beneath Bai Chendeng!

One meter, fifty centimeters, thirty centimeters…

A sharp glint flashed in Bai Chendeng’s eyes. His fingers became like knives, his palm like wind, and one hand plunged fiercely into the soil, seizing a living creature that was still struggling violently!

As he yanked the thing out of the dirt, a sharp pain shot through the web of his hand where the creature bit down hard. Enduring the pain, a look of intense satisfaction crossed his features. His voice was low: “Seeking death—”

The thing he held in his hand was actually a golden ginseng!

The skin touching the ginseng quickly stiffened, and the gold spread. This thing was intensely aggressive; mere physical contact was enough to cause rapid infection.

The ginseng shrieked, even growing a mouth filled with dense, tiny teeth!

Bai Chendeng slapped it, silencing its shriek.

However, if this continued, his hand would certainly turn to gold. He had to find a way. Was there anything that could…

Just then, Sang Qiwei shouted, “Throw it to me!”

Shen Lezhi rummaged through his bag, and Sang Qiwei began forming hand seals. The two of them had completely faked being afflicted!

Sang Qiwei had maintained a semi-conscious state for years; having already been alerted, how could he possibly fall victim a second time?!

Shen Lezhi tossed over all the spirit-isolating talismans he had—hundreds of them. Bai Chendeng threw the ginseng over. The actions were simultaneous!

There was no wind around him, yet an imposing aura formed naturally!

Sang Qiwei controlled the talismans for sealing. The rain of yellow paper talismans, resembling a tornado, was a feast of Daoist magic. Sang Qiwei lived up to his reputation as the strongest captain of the Crane Pass. In an instant, as Shen Lezhi continuously threw new talismans which he immediately gathered, he activated them with a massive, unsparing surge of spiritual power!

Lightning, fire, ice, and wood seals were used to bind the ginseng, severing it from the earth to prevent escape. Sang Qiwei’s talent was not in physical prowess, but in being a rare all-around genius with talismans, proficient and skilled in every type!

Watching the sky full of talismans seal the ginseng, wrapping it into a massive sphere, Bai Chendeng’s legs went soft. He sat down in the flower patch, not complaining even when the broken leaves poked him. He was astonished that Sang Qiwei had completed the entire sequence of operations in just two breaths.

    The Bureau truly had talent.

Patting the ginseng sphere in his hand, Sang Qiwei sneered, “The culprit is this thing.”

    “Mr. Bai, are you alright?”

Bai Chendeng shook his head. “I’m fine. Check on the others first.”

Shen Lezhi checked the condition of the fallen team members one by one.

    “Are you okay, Shi Hong?”

Shi Hong shook his head, abruptly waking up.

    “I’m fine… I’m fine!”

Che Deze climbed up, rolled up his trouser leg, and saw the spreading gold threads.

He stumbled over to Bai Chendeng, seeing his hands trembling and him slumped in the flower leaves. He asked with concern, “Mr. Bai, that was hard work.”

Bai Chendeng lowered his gaze and extended his hand. Che Deze understood, gripping Bai Chendeng’s wrist—not daring to use too much force, but needing enough—and pulled him up.

Bai Chendeng swayed after standing up, but stabilized under Che Deze’s worried gaze.

    “Mr. Bai.”

Seeing Bai Chendeng approach, Sang Qiwei said happily, “Thank you! We succeeded!”

    Bai Chendeng nodded. “Mm.”

He then voiced his confusion: “How can one ginseng spirit affect the land of an entire province? With its strength, it should only be able to cover this mountain at most.”

Sang Qiwei mused, “There must be more secrets within the mountain.”

Bai Chendeng’s gaze was deep. “Let’s rest briefly and continue forward.”

The spirit-isolating talismans were almost exhausted, with only a few remaining. Fortunately, Sang Qiwei could draw them on the spot. While he expended spiritual power to replenish the talismans, Bai Chendeng was surrounded by the others.

“Your palms are turning gold. Does it hurt?”

Bai Chendeng tried to pull his hand back, but Che Deze was holding his wrist and wouldn’t let go. After all, the man was worried about him.

“Mr. Bai, it’s our fault for being too weak. We’ve relied entirely on you and Captain Sang this whole way, we…”

Bai Chendeng said softly, “It was thanks to you relaxing that thing’s vigilance. Alright, stop looking…”

Qiu Dongyang and Shi Hong sighed. They were considered the weakest two in the team, having not only failed to help along the way but also dragging the team down.

This Great Demon before them was truly different. The usual ones they encountered were either bloodthirsty and manic, cold and emotionless, or seductive and manipulative. But Bai Chendeng was pure of heart, lacking the strange machinations of humans or the depravity and cruelty of demons. He was special, making people want to draw closer.

Bai Chendeng’s words were the truth, yet they offered immense comfort to the two men.

Their quick collapse had made the ginseng underestimate them, an effect that could not be ignored…

Che Deze looked at his empty palm. Just now, a hand that had been turning gold was swiftly withdrawn.

Shen Lezhi retrieved a medicinal ointment and forcefully inserted himself between Che Deze and Shi Hong.

“Mr. Bai, give me your hand.”

Bai Chendeng looked at the tube of Bureau-specialized medicine and refused. “No need. Distribute it to the others.”

Shen Lezhi smiled in his eyes. “This medicine only serves as a painkiller. The others are mostly infected on their legs and feet. I don’t want to touch them.”

Che Deze gave a dry laugh. Shen Lezhi’s excuse was terrible.

“If there are any unexpected situations later, we will still need Mr. Bai to turn the tide. We can’t have our hero fighting in pain.”

Shen Lezhi urged, “Mr. Bai, your hand.”

Bai Chendeng’s fingers were stiff, and his palm felt an undeniable numbness and itchiness.

    He extended his hand.

Shen Lezhi then motioned for Che Deze to hold his wrist, supporting the back of his hand, while he took the ointment and carefully applied it, little by little, to the palm that should have been fair and tender but was now stiff and golden.

The medicine truly couldn’t cure the condition, but after applying it, it did feel much more comfortable, easing the discomfort.

    Bai Chendeng switched hands.

Shen Lezhi carefully applied the medicine, Che Deze focused intently on supporting the hand, and beside them, Qiu Dongyang and Shi Hong watched with rapt attention.

If one ignored that they were merely applying ointment, judging by their expressions, one might think they were performing high-difficulty surgical procedures, with the lead surgeon and assistant highly focused.

Looking at the wound on the web of his hand, Shen Lezhi blew on it and asked, “Does it hurt?”

Bai Chendeng was stiff all over and replied dryly, “I’m fine.”

Shen Lezhi was respectful in his words, but in reality, having a family background in cultivation and having spent a long time with Sang Qiwei, his politeness toward Great Demons was present, but his fear was lacking.

He had simply changed his opinion of this rumored Cat Demon.

Applying a little extra to the web of his hand, Shen Lezhi comforted him, “It will stop hurting soon.”

Bai Chendeng withdrew his hand. “I wasn’t afraid of the pain.”

    Shen Lezhi chuckled softly.

Turning around, he saw that Sang Qiwei had finished drawing the talismans and was looking at them with a meaningful expression.

Shen Lezhi shrugged and put the remaining medicine back into his bag.

Sang Qiwei nudged his shoulder, winking.

    —Teasing the cat?

Shen Lezhi rubbed the bridge of his nose.

    —He’s quite nice.

Adjusting their mindset, with Shen Lezhi carrying the ginseng sphere, they continued their journey.

After that, they encountered no further enemies.

    Shu-la-la—

The surrounding golden leaves became purer. Some were so solid that stepping on them wouldn’t break them directly; instead, they were tough and resilient, like true gold and stone.

    True danger was always silent.

Everyone had considered that the remaining missing team members might be trapped by a more difficult opponent, perhaps facing an entity comparable in strength to a peak Great Demon. That wouldn’t be a problem for Bai Chendeng. If they had to face a Great Demon at the half-step Demon Immortal level, then even if the others fought desperately, they wondered if any of them could escape.

In short, they expected a fierce battle to achieve their final goal.

But when they found the true source of the anomaly, everyone felt disbelief, their faces etched with shock and fear.

    Bai Chendeng stopped.

The others behind him came to his side and saw the scene before them.

The faint light projected from the sky was reflected by the golden leaves, making everything around them magnificent and golden. But at this moment, this gold felt strangely familiar and intimate.

Because before their eyes appeared a patch of extremely normal… farmland.

Bai Chendeng’s lips parted slightly, his breath catching, as if he had suffered an immense shock.

    The others were confused.

    Why…

Why was there such normal farmland in the heart of a place filled with golden, petrified plants?

Why did merely looking at this farmland cause a chilling sensation and deep-seated terror?

Bai Chendeng’s fingers trembled lightly, his mind churning.

    He had seen it.

    He had seen it before.

This farmland, he had seen it!

Sang Qiwei suddenly exclaimed, “I see Captain Heng and the others!”

At the edge of the farmland, Heng Yuze and six others were wrapped in golden leaves, lifeless.

Bai Chendeng snapped out of his fear. He took a step, initially stiffly, but after two steps, he returned to normal. His heart raced, and his eyes focused only on Heng Yuze’s figure, no longer on the bizarre farmland.

    “Heng Yuze…”

Bai Chendeng tore away the golden leaves. With a single glance, he saw the misty white small drum Heng Yuze was clutching tightly, and a damaged peace knot.

Bai Chendeng subconsciously curved his lips upward.

    “Still alive…”

Bai Chendeng raised his hand and gently pressed the back of his hand against Heng Yuze’s cheek.

Soon, the five people who had been frozen in place also rushed over, helping to free the remaining people.

    “They’re alive, all of them.”

Sang Qiwei was surprised. “It truly is the Divine Drum. Worthy of being the sacred object of the Divine Sound Clan. It managed to protect so many people under these circumstances.”

Shen Lezhi fed everyone some nutrient supplements and medicine to restore their strength.

“Any later, and things might have been different.”

Qiu Dongyang asked, “Brother Shen, since the Divine Drum protected them from the danger of turning gold, they just needed to wait for rescue. Why do you say that?”

Shen Lezhi’s expression was grave as he glanced out of the corner of his eye toward the farmland, noticing a patch of withered yellow.

“The crops are spreading. Any later, and they would have been swallowed.”
