Chapter Index

A crisp sound echoed as the spoon was placed in the bowl and set down on the table.

Bai Chendeng accepted the napkin offered by Heng Yuze and discreetly wiped his mouth.

Heng Yuze smiled and said, “I’m very happy you came to see me.”

And the timing of his arrival was so coincidental that it was hard not to suspect he had been waiting for him all along.

Thinking of this, Heng Yuze felt even more satisfied.

This cold and indifferent little cat was finally willing to let down its guard and pay him some attention.

Bai Chendeng took something out from his pocket.

It was a safety knot woven from white thread, plump in the middle, containing something unknown. It was delicate and small overall.

“Grapevine wove it. Keep it close to your body, don’t take it off.”

Heng Yuze was so overjoyed that he spoke without thinking: “Okay! I’ll wear it even when I bathe!”

The moment the words left his mouth, Bai Chendeng glared at him.

“Take it off when you bathe.”

    Heng Yuze looked wronged: “Oh.”

Heng Yuze didn’t even ask what the safety knot was for. As long as it was a gift from Chendeng, he wouldn’t let go of it, even if it brought disaster.

“You have great talent in cultivation, and embarking on this path is not a waste. Inside is a crystal that can assist your cultivation, and also…”

Bai Chendeng’s voice was gentle as he softly explained, “The weaving of this item used my… it contains my aura. If you encounter any danger, you can tear this thing apart and throw it out. It should be able to buy you some time.”

Heng Yuze shook his head in refusal: “I can’t bear to throw it away.”

Bai Chendeng was utterly speechless: “Suit yourself.”

Heng Yuze stopped teasing him: “I’m kidding. If I encounter danger, I’ll definitely prioritize saving my life.”

This person is becoming increasingly frivolous.

Bai Chendeng thought this, and since he had given the item away, there was no need for him to stay. He immediately stood up, intending to leave.

Heng Yuze was surprised: “Leaving already?”

    “I’ll walk you out!”

He said he would walk him out, which should logically mean just to the door of his own home. But Heng Yuze kept following Bai Chendeng with a smile, almost walking him all the way home.

Bai Chendeng couldn’t tolerate it anymore: “Aren’t you going back?”

Heng Yuze was always direct: “I won’t be able to see you for a long time after this, so I want to spend a little more time with you.”

At times like this, his social anxiety seemed to vanish.

Even Heng Yuze himself found it strange that he could be so brazen, saying seemingly embarrassing things right in front of Chendeng.

Bai Chendeng froze for a moment, unsure how to respond. He rarely faced such intense human emotion directly, and Heng Yuze was the most unique case, leaving the inexperienced Bai Chendeng feeling flustered.

After a long silence, Bai Chendeng finally managed to squeeze out a sentence: “I’m leaving.”

When faced with a question he didn’t want to answer, he chose avoidance.

Heng Yuze sighed, watching him depart.

As he had said, they did not meet again for an entire year after that day.

Bai Chendeng reduced his streaming frequency, focusing on cultivation. He set aside time each month to meet with the Chendeng Foundation leadership to check if anyone was acting against their conscience.

The days and months passed, through autumn, winter, and spring, finally arriving at summer again—or more accurately, late summer and early autumn.

The weather was changing drastically now, cool in the mornings and evenings, and hot at noon.

“Shock! Gold growing in the ground! Follow me, and I’ll take you deep into the secrets of the gold in the soil…”

As Bai Chendeng sat cross-legged with his eyes closed, meditating, he heard a noise. Amidst a strange mix of background sounds, a young man with a soft, round face walked in, holding a phone and carrying food.

This person was the Grapevine himself, who, even with the aid of a treasure, had taken a full year of cultivation to achieve human form.

“Boss, barbecue or rice? Which one do you want?”

The smells of the food mixed together, rich in ingredients and strong in flavor.

Bai Chendeng frowned slightly and said flatly, “I’m not eating. Take it outside and eat it.”

Grapevine’s face fell. He carried away a pile of takeout boxes: “Then I’ll order you a lunch from Yingyue Tower.”

Grapevine loved street food; the stronger the flavor, the more he enjoyed it.

Bai Chendeng, however, had a more discerning palate and was generally uninterested in such things.

Today was Grapevine’s second day of successfully transforming into a human, and he was so happy he had gone out early in the morning and wandered around for half a day.

Grapevine sat on the sofa watching a live stream. On the screen, Zheng Lang was introducing dangerous mountains and rivers. This year, he had transitioned from being a food blogger to exploring various perilous locations. He no longer did mukbangs in small shops full of human scent but instead ventured into dangerous terrains.

Some places made his fans feel uneasy and terrified, but he just laughed it off, unconcerned.

“Thank you for the gift, Great Immortal Grape. No need to spend money, haha.”

    Grape is here.

It’s pitch black here. Only Brother Zheng has the guts to come.

Since some streamers were harmed during explorations, few dare to explore in person without a script anymore.

It seems that ever since the streamer Liu Yanhuan last year, some desolate areas have become increasingly dangerous. He and his assistant, Little Wang, were disfigured and quit the internet. I heard they even ended up disabled…

We want authenticity! What’s the point of staged scenes? I report every one I see!

Zheng Lang sat on a smooth boulder, behind him a desolate forest with eerie shadows. Unidentified animal sounds occasionally echoed, making it extremely chilling.

“You want me to continue reviewing restaurants? Boring, I’m done with that. Life, you just muddle through it. I have no expectations, debt-free and light-hearted, haha.”

Grapevine took a bite of his scallion pancake, licked the crumbs from his mouth, and typed: Coming back? I’ll treat you to a meal.

Zheng Lang immediately burst out laughing, as he could hardly imagine the Grapevine, who used to shrink down to less than the size of a palm, sitting across from him eating.

Great Immortal Grape: I’m serious, you know. Too late if you miss it!

Zheng Lang raised an eyebrow: “Fine, since you put it that way.”

Great Immortal Grape: Call Boss Feng to come too.

    “Alright, I’ll ask him.”

    The Administration.

The men in black suits wore the same attire year-round, bustling through the steel building like worker ants, their heads seemingly topped with antennae, nodding as a form of communication.

“News from Hetong District: The Gold Stone Plague is spreading and has already affected three neighboring provinces and cities.”

    “Haven’t they contained it?”

“There must be traces of malevolent demons in those areas. We can only defend, not capture them.”

“We’ve already sent four full teams for support. If we send more people, the branch office will be stretched thin.”

“There’s no choice. A major grain-producing province suffering this kind of incident has too great an impact…”

In a corner, several cadres who had just finished their shift were chatting while drinking specialized medicinal beverages, their brows furrowed with worry.

The bespectacled young man shook the paper report in his hand: “Team Leader Heng went too, right?”

“Desperate Heng Lang. How could he be absent?”

“In just one year, he went from an ignorant intern to Team Leader Heng, leading the Fourteenth Squad to repeated successes… I saw many scars on him when we showered together before.”

“I wonder why he pushes himself this hard. He knows a Great Demon, and they have a close relationship. He could easily have asked for a comfortable desk job, but he chose the most exhausting and dangerous field work.”

The young man adjusted his glasses: “He’s different from us. He’s always been very driven, as if he has some urgent goal to achieve. Anyway, I hope everything goes smoothly for him in Hetong District.”

Hearing this, Yuan Zhiyi poked his head out like a ghost, startling the others.

Yuan Zhiyi smiled: “What are you talking about?”

“Team Leader Yuan, you scared me to death.”

“We field agents aren’t easily scared, Team Leader Yuan! You did that on purpose!”

Yuan Zhiyi pleaded: “My apologies, I was wrong. Were you talking about Heng Yuze?”

The others exchanged glances but did not deny it.

    “Yes.”

Yuan Zhiyi’s smile deepened: “He knows what he’s doing. You guys should stop speculating.”

The young man’s eyes lit up, his curiosity undiminished by his glasses: “Team Leader Yuan! Please spill the details!”

Yuan Zhiyi laughed heartily: “I was just talking nonsense. Did you really believe me?”

Whether they believed him or not, only they knew. Yuan Zhiyi was forced to treat each of them to a cup of the new mint-flavored medicinal drink before the matter was settled.

“Next time, I won’t tease you. It costs me money.”

    A chorus of boos followed.

On the upper floors of the building, the presence of ordinary cadres was sparse. The offices were more spacious and offered greater privacy.

Director Fang took a stack of printed papers from a file bag and sighed as he looked at the handsome face of the man in the upper left corner.

Clear Sound Divine Drum, Desperate Heng Lang.

His subordinates had given him these nicknames, half in jest and half in admiration. To be honest, they weren’t very pleasant to hear.

Heng Yuze’s performance was truly astonishing, living up to the divination’s prediction.

Divination only glimpses one possibility of the future; it is not a certainty.

The Person in the Sedan Chair, a national treasure-level powerful being, had guarded Yangluo Mountain in the north for five years. Now that the crisis there was gradually fading, he could offer flexible support to various regions to some extent.

A year ago, the Person in the Sedan Chair had just emerged from Yangluo Mountain, his body imbued with the aura of national treasures.

    He performed a divination.

Initially, he was merely curious about the rare cat demon carrying the shadow of an ancient demon cultivator, so he cast a hexagram. Unexpectedly, after the divination ended, a new phenomenon arose.

The Person in the Sedan Chair’s hexagram prompted subsequent changes, and he did not conceal the truth from the high-level officials of the branch office.

The Administration weighed the pros and cons and chose to trust the divination, drawing Heng Yuze into the fold.

Now, it seemed Heng Yuze was indeed growing at a terrifying speed, just as predicted. While it couldn’t be fully confirmed whether he would become one of the nation-guarding cultivators in the future, a possibility had emerged.

“Why must a perfectly good human and demon get together…”

Director Fang sighed. For some reason, he thought of the Eye Worm incident a year ago, which ended with the culprit committing suicide.

Humans seek longevity, and demons seek immortality, but there are always some humans and demons who seek not for themselves, but for others.

Having arranged dinner with Zheng Lang and Feng Chengji, Grapevine planned to give them a big scare.

The next day, Grapevine’s hand trembled, nearly dropping his phone to the ground. Fortunately, a long vine extended from his waist and caught the device.

    “B-Boss!”

He frantically knocked on the door: “Boss, this is bad!”

Bai Chendeng was awakened by the noise and ended his meditation.

A year of cultivation had restored his strength to its peak.

    “What is it?”

Although Grapevine was usually unreliable, he rarely panicked. Bai Chendeng uncharacteristically felt a sense of foreboding.

Grapevine gripped his phone, staring blankly: “Heng Yuze is missing.”

Bai Chendeng’s pupils contracted. Memories buried for a year instantly surged up, piercing his heart like thorns.
