    Chapter 46

Bai Chendeng quickened his pace. Although his face was as expressionless as ever, everyone who saw him knew that he was suppressing a furious rage.

Returning to the dormitory, he pushed the door open and saw Heng Yuze and the other two gathered together.

    “Chendeng!”

Heng Yuze said, surprised and pleased, “You’re back.”

Bai Chendeng asked coldly, “You joined the Administration?”

The Administration did not accept mediocrity; it was a place that courted danger. After the exposure of the Evil Demon Alliance, the crises they faced would only become more numerous and difficult.

A gentle smile spread across Heng Yuze’s lips. He looked slightly ashamed and said, “Yes.”

How was it that in the span of an afternoon, everyone seemed to know?

He had overlooked his own fame.

    Bai Chendeng looked confused. “Why?”

Heng Yuze clenched his fingers, silent for a few seconds, and then suddenly smiled, saying, “I just feel like I’ve glimpsed a sliver of reality. There are demons and immortals in the world, and demons can be good or evil. I want to possess power to protect the existence I care about.”

Bai Chendeng raised an eyebrow. “Are you joking?”

    Heng Yuze was stunned. “?”

“No one needs your protection, and you don’t need to use these excuses to fob me off.” Bai Chendeng was somewhat irritated. “Did the Administration force you? Trick you? Whatever benefits they promised, you can come and ask me for them, but you cannot sell yourself out.”

Heng Yuze waved his hand. “Chendeng, you misunderstand.”

Zheng Lang and Feng Chengji sat on the empty beds in the corner, leaving the space to the man and the demon.

Before Chendeng arrived, they had also asked and advised, but ultimately respected Heng Yuze’s choice. Besides, the Administration was not bad; it was a permanent position. He wouldn’t have to worry about food and clothing for the rest of his life, even if he stopped being a streamer.

However, Bai Chendeng’s expression was grim. His reaction to Heng Yuze joining the Administration was particularly intense.

“Give up joining. Whatever you want, I can give it to you.”

    Bai Chendeng promised.

In that instant, Heng Yuze genuinely felt that he held a different weight in Chendeng’s heart.

    But he wanted more.

    “I…”

Heng Yuze refused the olive branch offered by Chendeng.

“Joining the Administration is my decision, and I won’t change it.”

    The atmosphere suddenly turned icy.

Bai Chendeng looked deeply at Heng Yuze, his eyes cold and restrained.

Without another word, Bai Chendeng turned and left the dormitory.

Not expecting this development, Heng Yuze immediately chased after him.

After they left, Zheng Lang spread his hands. “That was a little strange.”

    Feng Chengji nodded gravely. “Mhm—”

Footsteps sounded one after another. Heng Yuze chased behind, his face full of urgency.

    “Chendeng!”

He nearly stumbled, finally grabbing Bai Chendeng just before he left the dormitory building.

Bai Chendeng said coldly, “Let go.”

Heng Yuze obeyed and released him, but then spread his arms, blocking his path.

Bai Chendeng looked up, devoid of emotion.

Heng Yuze didn’t know what to say. His decision to join the Administration was not made on a whim, but the reason absolutely could not be told to Chendeng. Otherwise, Chendeng would abduct him, even if he had to, and then never speak to him again.

What he sought was too great. It was certainly not just to become someone with a slightly noticeable presence in Chendeng’s heart.

Heng Yuze clenched his fists, taking several deep breaths.

    “Forgive me, okay?”

Bai Chendeng gave a half-smile. “Since it is your own decision, I have no right to interfere.”

The relationship they had worked so hard to build returned to square one.

If he relented now, he might be forgiven, but their relationship would only stop there.

—More than friendship, less than family.

Heng Yuze gritted his teeth, watching Bai Chendeng brush past his arm and leave.

It felt as if an invisible hand was clutching his heart, and even his breathing was laced with a fine pain.

    Bai Chendeng left Qu Ying.

As the plane took off, Heng Yuze stood in an open area, watching the person at the apex of his heart fly away.

Zheng Lang patted his shoulder. “Seriously, I still don’t understand you, Brother Heng. If you’re so reluctant, why did you insist on joining the Administration?”

    Why?

It was all for this ungrateful little thing.

Heng Yuze gave a wry smile. “Brother Zheng, don’t tease me.”

Feng Chengji stretched his arms, facing the wind, and said cheerfully, “We should head back too.”

    Zheng Lang nodded.

Unknowingly, everyone was going their separate ways, heading toward their own futures.

    “I’m cooking tonight.”

“Haha, that’s what I was waiting for you to say!”

Yuan Zhiyi sent a crying emoji in the group chat.

The others were confused, thinking that the big shot with countless cat resources had been assigned dirty work by his superiors, and they offered comfort.

Only Yuan Zhiyi knew he was crying over the departure of a certain heartless little white cat.

He had only given a distant nod, and that was considered a farewell.

He truly was just as his grandfather described: untouched by mortal affections.

The group members sent many cute cat GIFs, and Yuan Zhiyi poked them across the distance.

Walking past his familiar neighborhood, Bai Chendeng pushed open the door and returned home.

The green vine clung to the doorframe like a gecko. After Bai Chendeng entered, it quickly climbed up his arm, looking utterly infatuated.

His neck tickled. Bai Chendeng had something on his mind, so he allowed it to climb around. The vine, thinking it hadn’t been noticed, simply climbed down his collar and inside his clothes.

Bai Chendeng’s breath hitched, his cheeks slightly flushed. He said urgently and coldly, “Come out.”

The vine gave one last caress to his tender, pale skin before reluctantly climbing out.

Bai Chendeng quickly grabbed the Grapevine in his hand and tossed it onto the sofa, treating it like a dead branch left over after eating grapes.

An electronic voice sounded: “Boss, you have some new, pleasant scent on you. It smells very nourishing.”

During the time he was injured and turned into a cat, the Administration had truly been unsparing, using many rare heavenly treasures to heal him.

Bai Chendeng pinched the Grapevine, rubbing it twice in his palm. The vine felt dizzy, and then it was placed on something hard, cold, and rigid.

Its tendril twitched, and it realized what was beneath it.

A transparent glass jar contained soil that looked like flowing sand, with distinct, fine grains, resembling tiny black-gold jade, completely free of stickiness or obstruction.

The vine was excited, the vine was happy, the vine was ecstatic!

This was one of Bai Chendeng’s gains.

With this item, the Grapevine had hope of cultivating a human form again within a year.

If it worked hard enough, the progress would be even faster.

The experience after failing his breakthrough, though brief, felt long enough to occupy half of Bai Chendeng’s life.

His memories of his early life were limited to the madness buried in the snowy night and his encounter with the Grapevine.

Now, even this tiny bit of emotion that transcended his monotonous cultivation life needed to be severed.

Heng Yuze entering the Administration meant he had made his choice. Bai Chendeng and he were no longer on the same path.

Cultivation was long and required single-minded focus.

Bai Chendeng had chosen the loneliest path.

His passion for emotion had been worn away during his years of wandering.

A week later, the Grapevine was hugging the glass jar. One vine reached inside, eating with relish, while other vines controlled electronic devices, playing happily.

Seeing Bai Chendeng emerge from the Underground Secluded Chamber, it was pleasantly surprised. “Boss, are you going out?”

Bai Chendeng put one hand in his pocket and changed his shoes. “Yes.”

After completing numerous procedures, Heng Yuze received the green light and finally resolved the permanent position issue within a week.

He was given time off to go home and pack his belongings. The guild contract issues would be handled by specialized personnel within the Administration.

The neighborhood was a place he had lived for three years, yet it now felt strange. In his eyes, the world seemed to have changed its appearance. Those ordinary things would become the longed-for peace and tranquility that frontline operatives craved.

Heng Yuze had a rough idea why Chendeng was so opposed to him joining the Administration.

After a trip, his state of mind was already different. If he were to be deployed long-term, fighting evil demons and witnessing bloody and cruel things… at that time, he would probably regret today’s decision.

Heng Yuze smiled bitterly, his thoughts drifting aimlessly.

He had gone from a socially anxious streamer who avoided people to actively applying to be a frontline operative. During this time, it wasn’t that he hadn’t resisted or struggled, but for that one possible future, he was willing to take the plunge.

    For his and Chendeng’s future.

Arriving at his front door, Heng Yuze looked surprised.

A youth like an orchid or a jade tree stood with his back to him, positioned right in his path.

Heng Yuze’s surprise turned to joy.

Soup was simmering on the stove. Heng Yuze wiped his hands and took out the pudding and other easy-to-store desserts he had prepared long ago, piling them in front of Bai Chendeng.

Bai Chendeng sat on the familiar sofa in his human form for the first time, quickly finding a comfortable spot.

A faint, sweet aroma began to fill the room. It wasn’t the pungent smell of rigid, dull processed food, but the warmth and affection of the days and nights they had spent together before.

They didn’t argue, nor did they stubbornly hold to their own views.

Heng Yuze brought him a thin blanket. “No one’s home, so it’s a bit cold. Warm up first.”

Bai Chendeng’s hand paused imperceptibly as he took the blanket, then he indulged Heng Yuze’s wish, placing the blanket he had coiled on countless times over his legs.

Heng Yuze’s heart was scratched by a cat’s paw. He was moved by this warm, domestic scene, melting into a pool of spring water.

“Since you have made your decision, I will no longer stop you. The Administration is not a place of peace, nor does it tolerate idlers. You will encounter danger and see many things contrary to human ethics during missions. I hope you do not forget your resolve today and do not lose yourself.”

It was rare for Bai Chendeng to speak so many words in one breath, which touched Heng Yuze even more.

    “I won’t forget.”

He knew exactly what he wanted.

Ever since his mother passed away a year after her surgery, he had lost his goal for living.

Now, he had found the meaning of survival again.

    He wouldn’t forget.

Bai Chendeng gazed at him intently.

After a full ten seconds, Bai Chendeng smiled faintly. “That’s good.”

It was the first time Heng Yuze had seen him smile outside of a cold sneer. He became visibly excited, wanting to give him the best of everything, but frustrated that he had little to offer him. He could only envelop him with the gentlest gaze.

    “Ding—”

    The timer went off.

Heng Yuze’s words were slightly incoherent. “I—I’ll go serve you the sweet soup.”

The sweet soup hadn’t simmered for long, but the flavor was excellent.

Bai Chendeng held the spoon, gently blowing on it, waiting for the temperature to drop before bringing the spoon to his mouth.

Heng Yuze was extremely satisfied just watching this scene.
