    Chapter 34

To outsiders, the great demon, appearing as a young man, remained composed, without any unnecessary movements.

Another team of cadres observing in secret clicked their tongues. “Director Fang specifically sent Yuan Zhiyi’s team to interact with the great demon, aiming for exactly this effect. But I don’t see the great demon reacting much. Did we fail…”

The team member beside him held up her phone, furiously snapping pictures.

“What are you doing, Xiao Yu?”

The ponytail-wearing girl named Yu giggled foolishly. “It definitely worked! Before, whenever I secretly looked at Mr. Bai, I always felt a subtle sense of danger, but now, I’ve taken so many photos, and Mr. Bai hasn’t reacted at all!”

    Hiss—

    That makes sense!

Bai Chendeng’s loosely clenched fist gradually tightened. Faced with such pure enthusiasm and gratitude, he felt completely out of his depth.

The scene was momentarily deadlocked. Silence spread, and a long time passed—so long that the young cadres thought they had messed up—before Bai Chendeng finally processed the emotion.

    “You all did well, too.”

He said this, then looked toward the other team of cadres hidden behind the corner of the building.

    “We’ve been spotted!”

The team leader pressed down on the ponytail girl’s head, cold sweat pouring out.

The girl put away her phone and waited a moment. Instead of pushing the hand off her head, she tentatively said, “Captain, it seems okay.”

The captain waited a little longer. Seeing that nothing happened, he cautiously poked his head out for another look.

Bai Chendeng was talking to Yuan Zhiyi’s group. After a brief exchange, he walked away.

Only then did the captain sigh in relief, saying with lingering fear, “It’s fine. Fortunately, this one has a decent temper.”

The other team members shrugged, unable to do anything about the two.

“You need to fix that infatuation problem.”

    “Tch…”

    “Where are we going next…”

    “Qu Ying First Affiliated Hospital.”

The hospital was located north of Qu Ying, surrounded by shops selling breakfast, funeral services, and medicine.

They entered through a side door and arrived at the inpatient area.

The five members, including the baby-faced Yuan Zhiyi, followed behind, having changed into casual clothes.

    “I feel a chill.”

    “You’re too nervous.”

As family members of a patient, they were too young and conspicuous, so they only escorted Bai Chendeng nearby before setting up an ambush elsewhere.

The hospital was overcrowded. Extra beds lined the corridors, occupied by patients who had little dignity left amidst the constant flow of people.

However, contrary to the expected atmosphere of gloom, the patients, family members, nurses, and doctors here formed a unique ecosystem.

    “Slowly, take it slowly…”

A wife supported her husband. The elderly couple walked down the aisle, and those around them tried their best to make way, afraid of bumping into them.

Bai Chendeng glanced at the pair, then found Yuan Zhiyi, who was lying in wait.

“There are more infected here than just these. How do you plan to handle the others?”

Yuan Zhiyi looked surprised. “Support has already arrived and is responsible for the other floors. Mr. Bai, is there a problem?”

“Yes. There is more than one severely infected person on this floor. One is hidden.”

Not just the captain, but the other team members were also astonished.

“We need to report this to the Director!”

“But the teams are already in position. It’s too late to change the plan now…”

As they spoke, Yuan Zhiyi had already finished reporting.

He then asked for advice. “Mr. Bai, what do you suggest?”

Bai Chendeng said, “You keep the people around here calm. Leave the two infected to me.”

    “Mr. Bai…”

The five members of the small team were practically overflowing with fervor and reverence in their eyes and hearts. They looked at Bai Chendeng as if he were a long-established senior from the Bureau, completely devoid of the previous barrier of viewing him as a demon.

“Yes! We will certainly do that!”

    The operation began.

Bai Chendeng adjusted his cuff while checking the room numbers. He seemed unable to find the correct location and stood waiting in the main hall for quite a while.

The people around, accustomed to the unchanging scenery of the hospital, couldn’t help but stare at such a handsome young man.

A kindhearted older woman asked, “Young man, which room number are you looking for?”

Bai Chendeng replied with a slight look of confusion, “My friend only said he was on this floor, but didn’t give the room number.”

The older woman thought for a moment. “Is he in one of the extra beds?”

Seeing the young man before her, she felt a surge of pity, thinking of her own son struggling far away. She asked warmly, “Don’t just stand there, you must be tired. Come rest by my bed, have some fruit later, and then confirm the location with your friend.”

Bai Chendeng was led by the older woman to sit by a patient’s bed.

It was an extra bed in the corridor. Other beds were spaced out before and after it. One was overcrowded with family members, and another only had a mound beneath the blanket, the patient inside completely covered.

The older woman brought fruit, extremely enthusiastic. “Eat, please eat.”

Bai Chendeng said shyly, “Thank you, Auntie. I’ll eat later.”

“You child, you’re so handsome, but too thin. Oh, right, I have some snacks here too. Let me look…”

Saying this, she began rummaging under the bed.

Bai Chendeng awkwardly stood up, his slender wrists delicately hidden in his sleeves. He carefully held a few round fruits, looking bewildered and timid.

    The elderly couple came again.

They walked with heavy, halting steps, their breathing labored, approaching from the end of the corridor.

“Are you looking at them? Those two are pitiful, too. They’re so old, and they don’t even have a son or daughter to look after them.”

The older woman handed him a bag of dried fruit.

Bai Chendeng was pressed down by her to sit by the bed and quietly thanked her.

“Seeing you makes me think of my son again.”

Bai Chendeng asked, “Is your son not local?”

“He went to a big city to make a living.”

    “That’s a shame.”

As they talked, the two elderly people swayed closer.

The older woman smiled and said, “Eat.”

Bai Chendeng gave a faint smile, though there was no amusement in his eyes.

The fruit rolled to the floor. Almost simultaneously, the middle-aged woman and the struggling elderly man were pinned to the ground.

Bai Chendeng looked down at her and said, “Disgusting thing, showing no restraint.”

The five-person team had begun their action as soon as the elderly man approached. Seeing the two infected controlled, they immediately produced their identification and managed the surrounding crowd.

Contrary to the expected scenario of them uttering threats and then self-destructing, the previously kind and warm woman’s face completely changed. Her facial muscles twitched, and something seemed to be rolling beneath the skin of her throat.

Bai Chendeng moved quickly, intending to finish her off, but was still a step too slow.

Just as his long, slender fingers reached her neck, the infected let out a terrifyingly high-pitched shriek that made the building hum.

    “What was that sound?”

Family members who had been ushered back into their rooms heard the noise and tried to peek out to see the commotion.

    “That scared me to death!”

    “What happened?”

    Yuan Zhiyi shouted, “Get back!”

The next second, the sound abruptly stopped. Bai Chendeng withdrew his hand, the web between his thumb and forefinger slightly red, and smoothly finished off the other infected.

Unexpectedly, the other infected was merely an empty shell.

    Damn it!

Bai Chendeng realized the oversight. His gaze shifted, finally settling on the mound shrinking under the blanket on the adjacent bed.

With such a commotion, even if someone was asleep, they should have woken up.

Bai Chendeng moved like a ghost, instantly arriving at the next bed and pulling back the blanket.

The thing inside had already adhered to the blanket. Bai Chendeng’s action tore a strip of the blanket away, revealing black and red fleshy tissue in the gap, forming a nest.

Tendons and flesh pulsed continuously with blood vessels. Exposed to the air, it emitted a sinister odor.

The extremely grotesque sight caused the family members standing at the doorway, watching the spectacle, to scream. Their eyesight was apparently quite good.

    “Monster!!!”

The five-person team immediately took out talismans and sealed them around the edges of the fleshy nest. The golden-red light of the talismans flared brightly, spreading to cover the entire hospital bed.

Bai Chendeng stepped back half a pace and asked, “Have you encountered this thing before?”

The baby-faced Yuan Zhiyi nodded. “Mr. Bai, be careful. The nest hasn’t fully hatched, but it has been awakened by the infected’s shriek. The Suppressing Filth Talismans we used just now aren’t high enough grade. I’m calling for assistance. The captain of the second large team downstairs will rush over to help immediately.”

As soon as he finished speaking, the sound of something breathing and beating inside the nest became increasingly distinct.

    “Thump—”

    “Thump—”

Accompanied by the sound of the ward door being closed and locked.

At this moment, the only living people in the corridor were the six of them.

    Bai Chendeng retreated again.

    This thing was too disgusting.

Since the Bureau had the capability to resolve it, he didn’t need to force himself to fight this thing.

Seeing his reaction, Yuan Zhiyi led his team members to shield Bai Chendeng behind them.

“Mr. Bai, please move to a safe location. We will handle the nest.”

The sound of the heartbeat grew louder, and the light of the Suppressing Filth Talismans dimmed further.

However, the Bureau’s support arrived quickly.

Footsteps merged into a continuous rumble, overpowering the throbbing of the nest. A team of people appeared at the end of the corridor.

    “Captain Deng!”

Deng Luo rushed over. His first glance fell upon the nest on the bed. Seeing that it hadn’t fully awakened, he breathed a sigh of relief. He then looked at Yuan Zhiyi and the others, noticing Bai Chendeng, who looked like an innocent bystander, behind them.

When Bai Chendeng’s gaze met his, Captain Deng Luo first froze, then showed a friendly smile.

The three team members behind him were not as composed. Facing a nest for the first time, they looked tense and serious, yet they still stole several glances at Bai Chendeng, unsure which was more dangerous in their minds.

Deng Luo’s backpack contained a large number of high-quality talismans.

He took out a bell-shaped magical artifact and gently shook it, coordinating with the talismans.

The ringing sound echoed, ethereal and distant, as if from another world.

The subsequent events were incredibly smooth. The operation targeting the First Affiliated Hospital was successfully completed. Even the nest was dealt with before it fully awakened. They encountered no significant resistance throughout the process.

In the car, Deng Luo rubbed his chin and mused, “Something’s not right.”

Bai Chendeng sat on the other side, their backpacks placed between them, clearly demarcating the space.

The driver, a familiar cadre who always transported Bai Chendeng, smiled as he looked at Deng Luo, who insisted on squeezing in. He chimed in, “Isn’t that good? The mission was perfectly executed.”

“No, my intuition tells me it wasn’t that simple.”

He asked, “What do you think, Mr. Bai?”

Bai Chendeng glanced at him, maintaining his silence.

    Deng Luo wasn’t bothered.

Bai Chendeng was looking at the scenery; he was looking at the demon, the great demon in human form.

He had seen plenty of fox spirits, but none compared to this taciturn little white cat.

There was something he hadn’t mentioned to anyone else.

He was actually an old fan of Chendeng. Ever since he learned it was a cat demon, he had been following it closely.

    So cute.

    He thought.

The human form is also very cute.
